दीक्षायै रूपꣳ शष्पाणि प्रायणीयस्य तोक्मानि । क्रयस्य रूपꣳ सोमस्य लाजाः सोमाꣳशवो मधु
The form of consecration is grass; the tokens of the journey are shoots; the form of purchase is Soma; the grains of Soma are honey.
आतिथ्यरूपं मासरं महावीरस्य नग्नहुः । रूपम् उपसदाम् एतत् तिस्रो रात्रीः सुरासुता
The form of hospitality is the monthly offering; the naked one is the form of the great hero; this is the form of the upasad rites—three nights, the offspring of the gods.
सोमस्य रूप क्रीतस्य परिस्रुत् परि षिच्यते । अश्विभ्यां दुग्धं भेषजम् इन्द्रायैन्द्रꣳ सरस्वत्या
The form of purchased Soma is poured out as the flowing Soma; medicine is milked for the Ashvins, for Indra, for Sarasvati.
आसन्दी रूपꣳ राजासन्द्यै वेद्यै कुम्भी सुराधानी । अन्तर ऽ उत्तरवेद्या रूपं कारोतरो भिषक्
The form of the seat is for the royal seat; the altar is the vessel for the offering; between the upper altars, the form is the healer's.
वेद्या वेदिः सम् आप्यते बर्हिषा बर्हिर् इन्द्रियम् । यूपेन यूप ऽ आप्यते प्रणीतो ऽ अग्निर् अग्निना
The altar is joined to the altar; the sacred grass is joined to the sacred grass of strength; the post is joined to the post; the fire is led by fire.
क्षत्रस्य योनिर् असि क्षत्रस्य नाभिर् असि । मा त्वा हिꣳसीन् मा मा हिꣳसीः
You are the source of sovereignty; you are the navel of sovereignty; may I not harm you, may you not harm me.
नि षसाद घृतव्रतो वरुणः पस्त्यास्व् आ । साम्राज्याय सुक्रतुः । मृत्योः पाहि । विद्योत् पाहि
Varuna, observing the vow of ghee, has settled among the dwellings; for sovereignty, with good purpose; protect from death; protect from destruction.
देवस्य त्वा सवितुः प्रसवेऽश्विनोर् बाहुभ्यां पूष्णो हस्ताभ्याम् । अश्विनोर् भैषज्येन तेजसे ब्रह्मवर्चसायाभि षिञ्चामि । सरस्वत्यै भैषज्येन वीर्यायान्नाद्यायाभि षिञ्चामि । इन्द्रस्येन्द्रियेण बलाय श्रियै यशसेऽभि षिञ्चामि
I sprinkle you with the impulse of the divine Savitar, with the arms of the Ashvins, with the hands of Pushan; with the medicine of the Ashvins, for brilliance and Brahmanic radiance; with the medicine of Sarasvati, for heroism and nourishment; with the power of Indra, for strength, beauty, and fame.
को ऽसि कतमो ऽसि कस्मै त्वा काय त्वा । सुश्लोक सुमङ्गल सत्यराजन्
Who are you? Which are you? For whom, for what are you? O one of good praise, auspicious, true king.
शिरो मे श्रीर् यशो मुखं त्विषिः केशाश् च श्मश्रूणि । राजा मे प्राणो ऽ अमृतꣳ सम्राट् चक्षुर् विराट् श्रोत्रम्
May my head be glory, my mouth fame, my hair and beard brilliance; my breath is king, immortality; my eye is overlord, my ear is radiant.
जिह्वा मे भद्रं वाङ् महो मनो मन्युः स्वराड् भामः । मोदाः प्रमोदा ऽ अङ्गुलीर् अङ्गानि मित्रं मे सहः
May my tongue be auspicious, my speech great, my mind sovereign, my anger self-controlled, my radiance bright. May joy and delight be mine; may my fingers and limbs be strong; may Mitra be with me; may strength be mine.
बाहू मे बलम् इन्द्रियꣳ हस्तौ मे कर्म वीर्यम् । आत्मा क्षत्रम् उरो मम
May my arms possess strength and power; may my hands be capable of action and valor. May my self be endowed with nobility; may my chest be steadfast.
पृष्टीर् मे राष्ट्रम् उदरम् अꣳसौ ग्रीवाश् च श्रोणी । ऊरू ऽ अरत्नी जानुनी विशो मे ऽङ्गानि सर्वतः
May my back be the realm, my abdomen the support, my shoulders and neck firm, my hips stable. May my thighs, knees, and shanks be strong; may all my limbs be protected everywhere.
नाभिर् मे चित्तं विज्ञानं पायुर् मे ऽपचितिर् भसत् । आनन्दनन्दाव् आण्डौ मे भगः सौभाग्यं पसः । जङ्घाभ्यां पद्भ्यां धर्मो ऽस्मि विशि राजा प्रतिष्ठितः
May my navel be the seat of thought and discernment; may my anus be the place of purification. May joy and supreme joy reside in my testicles; may fortune and prosperity be in my generative organ. Through my shanks and feet, I am established in righteousness, as a king among the people.
प्रति क्षत्रे प्रति तिष्ठामि राष्ट्रे प्रत्य् अश्वेषु प्रति तिष्ठामि गोषु । प्रत्य् अङ्गेषु प्रति तिष्ठाम्य् आत्मन् प्रति प्राणेषु क्षत्रे प्रति तिष्ठामि पुष्टे प्रति द्यावापृथिव्योः प्रति तिष्ठामि
I stand firm in the realm of nobility, in the kingdom, among horses, among cows. I stand firm in every limb, in the self, among breaths, in nobility, in nourishment, in heaven and earth.
त्रया देवा ऽ एकादश त्रयस्त्रिꣳशाः सुराधसः । बृहस्पतिपुरोहिता देवस्य सवितुः सवे । देवा देवैर् अवन्तु मा
Three gods, eleven, thirty-three, the beneficent deities, with Brihaspati as their priest, in the power of the divine Savitar—may the gods, together with other gods, protect me.
प्रथमा द्वितीयैर् द्वितीयास् तृतीयैस् तृतीयाः सत्येन सत्यं यज्ञेन यज्ञो यजुर्भिर् यजूꣳषि सामभिः सामान्य् ऋग्भिर् ऋचः पुरोनुऽवाक्याभिः पुरोऽनुवाक्या याज्याभिर् याज्या वषट्कारैर् वषट्कारा ऽ आहुतिभिर् आहुतयो मे कामान्त् सम् अर्धयन्तु भूः स्वाहा
The first with the second, the second with the third, the third with truth; truth with truth, sacrifice with sacrifice, yajus with yajus, sama with sama, ṛc with ṛc, with the preliminary chants, with the main chants, with the yājyā hymns, with the vaṣaṭ calls, with the offerings—may my desires be fulfilled. Earth, svāhā.
लोमानि प्रयतिर् मम त्वङ् म ऽ आनतिर् आगतिः । माꣳसं म ऽ उपनतिर् वस्व् अस्थि मज्जा म ऽ आनतिः
May my hair be readiness, my skin humility and approach; may my flesh be acquisition of wealth; may my bones and marrow be reverence.
यद् देवा देवहेडनं देवासश् चकृमा वयम् । अग्निर् मा तस्माद् एनसो विश्वान् मुञ्चत्व् अꣳहसः
If, O gods, we have committed offense against the gods, may Agni release me from all such sin and misfortune.
यदि दिवा यदि नक्तम् एनाꣳसि चकृमा वयम् । वायुर् मा तस्माद् एनसो विश्वान् मुञ्चत्व् अꣳहसः
Whether by day or by night we have committed offenses, may Vāyu release me from all such sin and misfortune.
यदि जाग्रद् यदि स्वप्न ऽ एनाꣳसि चकृमा वयम् । सूर्यो मा तस्माद् एनसो विश्वान् मुञ्चत्व् अꣳहसः
Whether awake or asleep we have committed offenses, may Sūrya release me from all such sin and misfortune.
यद् ग्रामे यद् अरण्ये यत् सभायां यद् इन्द्रिये । यच्छूद्रे यद् अर्ये यद् एनश् चकृमा वयं यद् एकस्याधि धर्मणि तस्यावयजनम् असि
Whatever offense we have committed in the village, in the forest, in the assembly, in the senses, among the lowly or the noble, or in the matter of one’s own duty—may that be removed.
यद् आपो ऽ अघ्न्या ऽ इति वरुणेति शपामहे ततो वरुण नो मुञ्च । अवभृथ निचुम्पुण निचेरुर् असि निचुम्पुणः । अव देवैर् देवकृतम् एनो ऽयक्ष्य् अव मर्त्यैर् मर्त्यकृतम् । पुरुराव्णो देव रिषस् पाहि
Whatever is in the waters, O Aghnyā, O Varuṇa, we invoke; from that, Varuṇa, release us. You are the remover of impurity, the cleanser. Remove the sin done by gods and by mortals. O god of many gifts, protect us from harm.
समुद्रे ते हृदयम् अप्स्व् अन्तः सं त्वा विशन्त्व् ओषधीर् उतापः । सुमित्रिया न ऽ आप ऽ ओषधयः सन्तु दुर्मित्रियास् तस्मै सन्तु यो ऽस्मान् द्वेष्टि यं च वयं द्विष्मः
May your heart be in the ocean, deep within the waters; may herbs and waters enter you. May the waters and herbs be friendly to us; may they be unfriendly to those who hate us and whom we hate.
द्रुपदाद् इव मुमुचानः स्विन्नः स्नातो मलाद् इव । पूतं पवित्रेणेवाज्यम् आपः शुन्धन्तु मैनसः
As one is released from a fetter, as one cleanses oneself from sweat after bathing, as clarified butter is purified by a strainer, so may the waters cleanse me from impurity.
उद् वयं तमसस् परि स्वः पश्यन्त ऽ उत्तरम् । देवं देवत्रा सूर्यम् अगन्म ज्योतिर् उत्तमम्
We have risen from darkness to behold the higher light; we have reached the divine Sun among the gods, the supreme radiance.
अपो ऽ अद्यान्व् अचारिषꣳ रसेन सम् असृक्ष्महि । पयस्वान् अग्न ऽ आगमं तं मा सꣳ सृज वर्चसा प्रजया च धनेन च
Today I have approached the waters; with their essence we have flowed together. O waters rich in milk, I have come to you; grant me brilliance, offspring, and wealth.
एधोऽस्य् एधिषीमहि । समिद् असि तेजो ऽसि तेजो मयि धेहि । समाववर्ति पृथिवी सम् उषाः सम् उ सूर्यः । सम् उ विश्वम् इदं जगत् । वैश्वानरज्योतिर् भूयासं विभून् कामान् व्यश्नवै भूः स्वाहा
May you be kindled, may we kindle you. You are the fuel, you are the radiance; place radiance in me. May earth, dawn, and sun be in harmony; may the whole world be united. May I become the universal fire’s light, may I enjoy abundant desires. Earth, svāhā.
अभ्यादधामि समिधम् अग्ने व्रतपते त्वयि । व्रतं च श्रद्धां चोपैमीन्धे त्वा दीक्षितोऽअहम्
I place the kindling upon you, O Agni, lord of vows; in you I place the vow and faith. I, the consecrated, kindle you.
यत्र ब्रह्म च क्षत्रं च सम्यञ्चो चरतः सह । तं लोकं पुण्यं प्रज्ञेषं यत्र देवाः सहाग्निना
Where Brahman and Kshatra walk together in harmony, that world is holy, full of wisdom, where the gods dwell with Agni.
