वीतꣳ हविः शमितꣳ शमिता यजध्यै तुरीयो यज्ञो यत्र हव्यम् एति । ततो वाका ऽ आशिषो नो जुषन्ताम्
Let the clarified offering, the appeased, be offered for worship; the fourth sacrifice is where the oblation goes; from there, may words and blessings be gracious to us.
सूर्यरश्मिर् हरिकेशः पुरस्तात् सविता ज्योतिर् उद् अयाꣳऽ अजस्रम् । तस्य पूषा प्रसवे याति विद्वान्त् सम्पश्यन् विश्वा भुवनानि गोपाः
The sun's ray, tawny-haired, Savitar, rises in front, ever shining; in his movement, Pūṣan goes forth, knowing, seeing all worlds, the protector.
विमान ऽ एष दिवो मध्य ऽ आस्त ऽ आपप्रिवान् रोदसी ऽ अन्तरिक्षम् । स विश्वाचीर् अभि चष्टे घृताचीर् अन्तरा पूर्वम् अपरं च केतुम्
This one, measuring out, sits in the midst of heaven, filling both earth and sky and the atmosphere; he beholds all things, shining with ghee, between the earlier and later lights.
उक्षा समुद्रो ऽ अरुणः सुपर्णः पूर्वस्य योनिं पितुर् आ विवेश । मध्ये दिवो निहितः पृश्निर् अश्मा वि चक्रमे रजसस् पात्य् अन्तौ
The bull, the ocean, the ruddy, the eagle, entered the womb of the eastern father; placed in the middle of heaven, the speckled stone, he strides, protecting the ends of space.
इन्द्रं विश्वा ऽ अवीवृधन्त् समुद्रव्यचसं गिरः । रथीतमꣳ रथीनां वाजानाꣳ सत्पतिं पतिम्
All the hymns magnified Indra, whose domain is the ocean; the best charioteer among charioteers, the true lord of prizes, the master.
देवहूर् यज्ञ ऽ आ च वक्षत् सुम्नहूर् यज्ञ ऽ आ च वक्षत् । यक्षद् अग्निर् देवो देवाꣳऽ आ च वक्षत्
Let the invocation of the gods proceed to the sacrifice, let the invocation of favor proceed to the sacrifice; let Agni, the god, proceed to the gods at the sacrifice.
वाजस्य मा प्रसव ऽ उद्ग्राभेणोद् अग्रभीत् । अध सपत्नान् इन्द्रो मे निग्राभेणाधराꣳऽ अकः
With the grasp of the upraised hand, I have seized the source of vigor; then, with the grasp of the downward hand, may Indra cast down my rivals.
उद्ग्राभं च निग्राभं च ब्रह्म देवा ऽ अवीवृधन् । अधा सपत्नान् इन्द्राग्नी मे विषूचीनान् व्यस्यताम्
The gods increased both the up-grasp and the down-grasp with sacred utterance; then, O Indra and Agni, scatter my rivals, those who are hostile.
क्रमध्वम् अग्निना नाकम् उख्यꣳ हस्तेषु बिभ्रतः । दिवस् पृष्ठꣳ स्वर् गत्वा मिश्रा देवेभिर् आध्वम्
Ascend to the heaven to be enjoyed with Agni, bearing it in your hands; having reached the back of the sky, go to the light, united with the gods.
प्राचीम् अनु प्रदिशं प्रेहि विद्वान् अग्नेर् अग्ने पुरो ऽ अग्निर् भवेह । विश्वा ऽ आशा दीद्यानो वि भाह्य् ऊर्जं नो धेहि द्विपदे चतुष्पदे
Go forth along the eastern direction, O wise one, as Agni before Agni, be you here; shining in all quarters, spread your light, grant us strength for bipeds and quadrupeds.
पृथिव्या ऽ अहम् उद् अन्तरिक्षम् आरुहम् अन्तरिक्षाद् दिवम् आरुहम् । दिवो नाकस्य पृष्ठात् स्वर् ज्योतिर् अगाम् अहम्
From the earth I have ascended to the atmosphere, from the atmosphere I have ascended to heaven; from the summit of the celestial vault I have reached the light of heaven.
स्वर् यन्तो नापेक्षन्त ऽ आ द्याꣳ रोहन्ति रोदसी । यज्ञं ये विश्वतोधारꣳ सुविद्वाꣳसो वितेनिरे
Those who go to the light do not look back; they ascend to heaven and earth, those wise ones who have spread the all-supporting sacrifice.
अग्ने प्रेहि प्रथमो देवयतां चक्षुर् देवानाम् उत मर्त्यानाम् । इयक्षमाणा भृगुभिः सजोषाः स्वर् यन्तु यजमानाः स्वस्ति
Agni, go forth, the foremost among those who worship the gods, the eye of gods and mortals; those who worship, united with the Bhṛgus, let the sacrificers go to the light, with well-being.
नक्तोषासा समनसा विरूपे धापयेते शिशुम् एकꣳ समीची । द्यावाक्षामा रुक्मो ऽ अन्तर् वि भाति देवा ऽ अग्निं धारयन् द्रविणोदाः
Night and dawn, of one mind though of different forms, nurture the single child together; heaven and earth, the golden one, shines within, the gods, givers of wealth, uphold Agni.
अग्ने सहस्राक्ष शतमूर्धञ् छतं ते प्राणाः सहस्रं व्यानाः । त्वꣳ साहस्रस्य राय ऽ ईशिषे तस्मै ते विधेम वाजाय स्वाहा
O Agni, thousand-eyed, with a hundred heads, a hundred are your breaths, a thousand your vital airs. You are the lord of a thousandfold wealth. To you we offer worship for strength. Svāhā.
सुपर्णो ऽसि गरुत्मान् पृष्ठे पृथिव्याः सीद । भासान्तरिक्षम् आ पृण ज्योतिषा दिवम् उत् तभान तेजसा दिश ऽ उद् दृꣳह
You are the splendid-winged Garutman; settle upon the earth's back. Fill the midspace with your radiance, illumine the heavens with your light, and with your brilliance make the directions firm.
आजुह्वानः सुप्रतीकः पुरस्ताद् अग्ने योनिम् आ सीद साधुया । अस्मिन्त्सधस्थे ऽ अध्य् उत्तरस्मिन् विश्वे देवा यजमानश् च सीदत
With offerings, O Agni of beautiful form, sit in the proper place at the front. In this sacred seat and in the higher one, let all the gods and the worshipper be seated.
तꣳ सवितुर् वरेण्यस्य चित्राम् आहं वृणे सुमतिं विश्वजन्याम् । याम् अस्य कण्वो अदुहत् प्रपीनाꣳ सहस्रधारां पयसा महीं गाम्
I choose the bright favor of Savitar, the desirable one, the universal blessing, which Kanva milked from her, the great cow, abundant with a thousand streams of milk.
विधेम ते परमे जन्मन्न् अग्ने विधेम स्तोमैर् अवरे सधस्थे । यस्माद् योनेर् उदारिथा यजे तं प्र त्वे हवीꣳषि जुहुरे समिद्धे
We worship you, Agni, in your highest birth, we worship with hymns in the lower seat. From the womb from which you have arisen, I worship you; to you, when kindled, the offerings are brought.
प्रेद्धो ऽ अग्ने दीदिहि पुरो नो ऽजस्रया सूर्म्या यविष्ठ । त्वाꣳ शश्वन्त ऽ उप यन्ति वाजाः
Shine forth, O Agni, blaze before us with unfailing, youthful vigor. To you, ever, the prizes come.
अग्ने तम् अद्याश्वं न स्तोमैः क्रतुं न भद्रꣳ हृदिस्पृशम् । ऋध्यामा त ऽ ओहैः
Agni, today may we attain with our hymns that swift horse, that wise and auspicious power which touches the heart, by your help.
चित्तिं जुहोमि मनसा घृतेन यथा देवा ऽ इहागमन् वीतिहोत्रा ऽ ऋतावृधः । पत्ये विश्वस्य भूमनो जुहोमि विश्वकर्मणे विश्वाहादाभ्यꣳ हवि
With mind and with clarified butter I offer discernment, as the gods came here, the righteous, the upholders of truth. For the lord of all beings, for the all-creating one, I offer this oblation, which is for all desires.
सप्त ते ऽ अग्ने समिधः सप्त जिह्वाः सप्त ऽ ऋषयः सप्त धाम प्रियाणि । सप्त होत्राः सप्तधा त्वा यजन्ति सप्त योनीर् आ पृणस्व घृतेन स्वाहा
Seven are your kindlings, O Agni, seven your tongues, seven the sages, seven your beloved abodes. Seven are the priests, sevenfold they worship you; fill seven wombs with ghee. Svāhā.
शुक्रज्योतिश् च चित्रज्योतिश् च सत्यज्योतिश् च ज्योतिष्माꣳश् च । शुक्रश् च ऽ ऋतपाश् चात्यꣳहाः
Brilliant light, variegated light, true light, and the radiant one; the bright one, the guardian of truth, the great ones.
ईदृङ् चान्यदृङ् च सदृङ् च प्रतिसदृङ् च । मितश् च संमितश् च सभराः
Such as this, and different, and similar, and corresponding; measured, well-measured, and bearing together.
ऋतश् च सत्यश् च ध्रुवश् च धरुणश् च । धर्ता च विधर्ता च विधारयः
Order, truth, the stable, and the supporter; the holder, the arranger, and the sustainers.
ऋतजिच् च सत्यजिच् च सेनजिच् च सुषेणश् च । अन्तिमित्रश् च दूरेऽअमित्रश् च गणः
Conqueror by order, conqueror by truth, conqueror in battle, with good troops; the friend at the border, the unfriendly at a distance, the host.
ईदृक्षास ऽ एतादृक्षास ऽ ऊ षु णः सदृक्षासः प्रतिसदृक्षास ऽ एतन । मितासश् च संमितासो नो ऽ अद्य सभरसो मरुतो यज्ञे ऽ अस्मिन्
Such as these, and those like these, and those who are similar, and those who correspond—let them come. Let those who are measured and well-measured, O Maruts, with strength, be present for our sacrifice today.
स्वतवाꣳश् च प्रघासी च सांतपनश् च गृहमेधी च । क्रीडी च शाकी चोज्जेषी
Possessing wealth, the devourer, the inflamer, the householder; the playful, the branch-bearer, the exciter.
उग्रश् च भीमश् च ध्वान्तश् च धुनिश् च । सासह्वाꣳश् चाभियुग्वा च विक्षिपः स्वाहा । इन्द्रं दैवीर् विशो मरुतो ऽनुवर्त्मानो ऽभवन् यथेन्द्रं दैवीर् विशो मरुतो ऽनुवर्त्मानो ऽभवन् । एवम् इमं यजमानं दैवीश् च विशो मानुषीश् चानुवर्त्मानो भवन्तु
The fierce, the terrible, the dark, the shaker; the powerful, the assailant, the hurler—Svāhā. As the divine hosts, O Maruts, followed Indra, so may the divine and human hosts follow this worshipper.
