सं ते पयाꣳसि सम् उ यन्तु वाजाः सं वृष्ण्यान्य् अभिमातिषाहः । आप्यायमानो ऽ अमृताय सोम दिवि श्रवाꣳस्य् उत्तमानि धिष्व
May your milks, your strengths, your manly powers, and your victorious energies come together; being filled, O Soma, for immortality, place the highest glories in heaven.
आ प्यायस्व मदिन्तम सोम विश्वेभिर् अꣳशुभिः । भवा नः सुश्रवस्तमः सखा वृधे
Fill yourself, O Soma, most exhilarating, with all your streams; be for us the most renowned friend for increase.
आ ते वत्सो मनो यमत् परमाच् चित् सधस्थात् । अग्ने त्वां कामया गिरा
To you, O Agni, my mind goes as a calf to its distant resting place; I desire you with my song.
तुभ्यं ता ऽ अङ्गिरस्तम विश्वाः सुक्षितयः पृथक् । अग्ने कामाय येमिरे
To you, O most Angiras, all good dwellings separately, O Agni, have turned for desire.
अग्निः प्रियेषु धामसु कामो भूतस्य भव्यस्य । सम्राड् एको वि राजति
Agni, in beloved abodes, is the desire of what has been and what will be; the sole sovereign shines forth.
मयि गृह्णाम्य् अग्रे ऽ अग्निꣳ रायस्पोषाय सुप्रजास्त्वाय सुवीर्याय । माम् उ देवताः सचन्ताम्
I take Agni first for myself, for increase of wealth, for good offspring, for heroism; may the deities attend me.
अपां पृष्ठम् असि योनिर् अग्नेः समुद्रम् अभितः पिन्वमानम् । वर्धमानो महाँ२ ऽ आ च पुष्करे दिवो मात्रया वरिम्णा प्रथस्व
You are the back of the waters, the womb of Agni, swelling around the ocean. Growing great, come forth in the lotus; spread out by the measure and vastness of the sky.
ब्रह्म जज्ञानं प्रथमं पुरस्ताद् वि सीमतः सुरुचो वेन ऽ आवः । स बुध्न्या ऽ उपमा ऽ अस्य विष्ठाः सतश् च योनिम् असतश् च वि वः
Brahma was born first, in the beginning, radiant before the boundaries, shining with splendor. He, the Vena, moved; his roots are deep, the highest and lowest, the womb of existence and non-existence.
हिरण्यगर्भः सम् अवर्तताग्रे भूतस्य जातः पतिर् एक ऽ आसीत् । स दाधार पृथिवीं द्याम् उतेमां कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
Hiraṇyagarbha arose in the beginning, the sole lord of all that exists. He sustained earth and heaven; to which god shall we offer our sacrifice?
द्रप्सश् चस्कन्द पृथिवीम् अनु द्याम् इमं च योनिम् अनु यश् च पूर्वः । समानं योनिम् अनु संचरन्तं द्रप्सं जुहोम्य् अनु सप्त होत्राः
The drop descended upon earth and heaven, upon this womb and the former one. I offer the drop moving through the common womb, together with the seven priests.
नमोऽस्तु सर्पेभ्यो ये के च पृथिवीम् अनु । ये ऽ अन्तरिक्षे ये दिवि तेभ्यः सर्पेभ्यो नमः
Salutations to the serpents, whoever they are upon the earth, those in the atmosphere, those in the sky; to those serpents, salutations.
या ऽ इषवो यातुधानानां ये वा वनस्पतीꣳ१ ऽरनु । ये वावटषु शेरते तेभ्यः सर्पेभ्यो नमः
To the arrows of the demons, those among the trees, those who lie in the hollows—salutations to those serpents.
ये वामी रोचने दिवो ये वा सूर्यस्य रश्मिषु । येषाम् अप्सु सदस् कृतं तेभ्यः सर्पेभ्यो नमः
Those in your shining realm of the sky, those in the rays of the sun, those whose seat is made in the waters—to those serpents, salutations.
कृणुष्व पाजः प्रसितिं न पृथ्वीं याहि राजेवामवाँ२ ऽ इभेन । तृष्वीम् अनु प्रसितिं द्रूणानो ऽस्तासि विध्य रक्षसस् तपिष्ठैः
Make a path, a course like the earth; go forth like a king with a mighty elephant. Following the course, moving swiftly, stand firm; strike the demons with the fiercest weapons.
तव भ्रमास ऽ आशुया पतन्त्य् अनु स्पृश धृषता शोशुचानः । तपूꣳष्य् अग्ने जुह्वा पतङ्गान् असंदितो वि सृज विष्वग् उल्काः
Your sparks fly swiftly; touch with boldness, burning fiercely. O Agni, send forth your fiery tongues, release the flames everywhere, scatter the embers without hesitation.
प्रति स्पशो वि सृज तूर्णितमो भवा पायुर् विशो ऽ अस्या अदब्धः । यो नो दूरे ऽ अघशꣳसो यो ऽ अन्त्य् अग्ने माकिष् टे व्यथिर् आ दधर्षीत्
Release the rays, be the swiftest; be the unassailable protector of this people. Whoever brings harm from afar or near, O Agni, let none of them overcome or afflict us.
उद् अग्ने तिष्ठ प्रत्य् आ तनुष्व न्य् अमित्राँ२ ऽ ओषतात् तिग्महेते । यो नो ऽ अरातिꣳ समिधान चक्रे नीचा तं धक्ष्य् अतसं न शुष्कम्
Rise up, Agni, extend yourself; let the enemies be scattered by your sharpness. Whoever has kindled hostility against us, burn him down, as dry wood is consumed by fire.
ऊर्ध्वो भव प्रति विध्याध्य् अस्मद् आविष् कृणुष्व दैव्यान्य् अग्ने । अव स्थिरा तनुहि यातुजूनां जामिम् अजामिं प्र मृणीहि शत्रून् । अग्नेष् ट्वा तेजसा सादयामि
Be upright, strike back from us; reveal the divine powers, O Agni. Remove the firm bonds of the sorcerers, destroy the lineage of the unborn, annihilate the enemies. With your brilliance, O Agni, I subdue them.
अग्निर् मूर्धा दिवः ककुत् पतिः पृथिव्या ऽ अयम् । अपाꣳ रेताꣳसि जिन्वति । इन्द्रस्य त्वौजसा सादयामि
Agni is the crown of heaven, the lord of earth; he invigorates the seeds of the waters. By the strength of Indra, I subdue them.
भुवो यज्ञस्य रजसश् च नेता यत्रा नियुद्भिः सचसे शिवाभिः । दिवि मूर्धानं दधिषे स्वर्षां जिह्वाम् अग्ने चक्रिषे हव्यवाहम्
You are the leader of sacrifice and the realm, where you join with auspicious companions. You have placed your head in heaven, your tongue in the sun; O Agni, you have made yourself the carrier of offerings.
ध्रुवासि धरुणास्तृता विश्वकर्मणा । मा त्वा समुद्रऽउद् वधीन् मा सुपर्णोऽव्यथमाना पृथिवीं दृꣳह
You are firm, established by the maker of all. May the ocean not harm you, nor the swift-winged bird; strengthen the earth, unshaken.
प्रजापतिष् ट्वा सादयत्व् अपा पृष्ठे समुद्रस्येमन् । व्यचस्वतीं प्रथस्वतीं प्रथस्व पृथिव्यसि
May Prajapati subdue you upon the back of the waters, in the ocean here. Spread out, expand, shine forth; you are the earth.
भूर् असि भूमिर् अस्य् अदितिर् असि विश्वधाया विश्वस्य भुवनस्य धर्त्री । पृथिवीं यच्छ पृथिवीं दृꣳह पृथिवीं मा हिꣳसीः
You are Bhū, you are the earth, you are Aditi, the universal supporter, bearer of all worlds. Hold the earth, strengthen the earth, do not injure the earth.
विश्वस्मै प्राणायापानाय व्यानायोदानाय प्रतिष्ठायै चरित्राय । अग्निष् ट्वाभि पातु मह्या स्वस्त्या छर्दिषा शंतमेन तया देवतयाङ्गिरस्वद् ध्रुवा सीद
For all breath, inhalation, exhalation, upward breath, foundation, and movement—may Agni protect you for my well-being, with a shield, with peace, with that divine Angiras power; sit firmly.
काण्डात्-काण्डात् प्ररोहन्ती परुषः-परुषस् परि । एवा नो दूर्वे प्र तनु सहस्रेण शतेन च
O Durva grass, which sprouts again and again from every joint, from every rough part—so may you, with a hundred and a thousand shoots, spread forth for us.
या शतेन प्रतनोषि सहस्रेण विरोहसि । तस्यास् ते देवीष्टके विधेम हविषा वयम्
You, who stretch out in a hundred ways and grow in a thousand, to you, O divine brick, we offer worship with oblation.
यास् ते ऽ अग्ने सूर्ये रुचो दिवम् आतन्वन्ति रश्मिभिः । ताभिर् नो ऽ अद्य सर्वाभी रुचे जनाय नस् कृधि
O Agni, those rays of yours in the sun that extend to the sky with their beams—by all those lights today, make us shine among people.
या वो देवाः सूर्ये रुचो गोष्व् अश्वेषु या रुचः । इन्द्राग्नी ताभिः सर्वाभी रुचं नो धत्त बृहस्पते
O gods, the lights of yours in the sun, the lights among cows and horses—Indra and Agni, with all those lights, O Brihaspati, bestow radiance upon us.
विराड् ज्योतिर् अधारयत् । स्वराड् ज्योतिर् अधारयत् । प्रजापतिष् ट्वा सादयतु पृष्ठे पृथिव्या ज्योतिष्मतीम् । विश्वस्मै प्राणायापानाय व्यानाय विश्वं ज्योतिर् यच्छ । अग्निष्टे ऽधिपतिस् तया देवतयाङ्गिरस्वद् ध्रुवा सीद
The sovereign established the light; the self-ruler established the light; may Prajapati seat you, radiant, on the earth’s surface; grant all light to breath, to expiration, to circulation; Agni, you are the lord—by that divinity, O Angiras, sit firm.
मधुश् च माधवश् च वासन्तिकाव् ऋतू ऽ अग्नेर् अन्तःश्लेषोऽसि कल्पेतां द्यावापृथिवी कल्पन्ताम् आप ऽ ओषधयः कल्पन्ताम् अग्नयः पृथङ् नम ज्यैष्ठ्याय सव्रताः । ये ऽ अग्नयः समनसो ऽन्तरा द्यावापृथिवी ऽ इमे वासन्तिकाव् ऋतू ऽअभिकल्पमाना ऽ इन्द्रम् इव देवा ऽ अभिसंविशन्तु तया देवतयाङ्गिरस्वद् ध्रुवे सीदतम्
Madhu and Madhava, the spring seasons, are joined within Agni; may heaven and earth be prepared, may the waters and plants be prepared, may the fires, each with their own vow, be prepared for supremacy; let those fires, united in mind, between heaven and earth, those spring seasons, approach like the gods approach Indra; by that divinity, O Angiras, sit firm.
