उद् उत्तमं वरुण पाशम् अस्मद् अवाधमं वि मध्यमꣳ श्रथाय । अथा वयम् आदित्य व्रते तवानागसो ऽ अदितये स्याम
O Varuṇa, lift away from us the highest noose, loosen the middle, and remove the lowest; then, O Āditya, may we, sinless, belong to your rule of truth and to Aditi.
अग्रे बृहन्न् उषसामूर्ध्वो ऽ अस्थान् निर्जगन्वान् तमसो ज्योतिषागात् । अग्निर् भानुना रुशता स्वङ्ग ऽ आ जातो विश्वा सद्मान्य् अप्राः
At the fore, great among the dawns, he rose high, having driven away darkness, he came with light; Agni, shining with his radiant form, was born and filled all dwellings.
हꣳसः शुचिषद् वसुर् अन्तरिक्षसद् होता वेदिषद् अतिथिर् दुरोणसत् । नृषद् वरसद् ऋतसद् व्योमसद् अब्जा गोजा ऽ ऋतजा अद्रिजा ऽ ऋतम् बृहत्
The swan dwells in purity, the wealth-bringer in the midspace, the priest on the altar, the guest in the house; he sits among men, among the gods, in truth, in the sky; born of waters, of cows, of truth, of mountains—truth, the great.
सीद त्वं मातुर् अस्या ऽ उपस्थे विश्वान्य् अग्ने वयुनानि विद्वान् । मैनां तपसा मार्चिषाऽभिशोचीर् अन्तर् अस्याꣳ शुक्रज्योतिर् वि भाहि
Sit, you, in the lap of this mother, O Agni, knowing all the paths; do not burn her with your heat or flame—shine forth as the bright light within her.
अन्तर् अग्ने रुचा त्वम् उखायाः सदने स्वे । तस्यास् त्वꣳ हरसा तपन् जातवेदः शिवो भव
Within, O Agni, with your radiance, in the hearth’s own seat; with your power, blazing, O Jātavedas, be auspicious.
शिवो भूत्वा मह्यम् अग्नेऽ अथो सीद शिवस् त्वम् । शिवः कृत्वा दिशः सर्वाः स्वं योनिम् इहासदः
Having become auspicious, O Agni, sit for me; being auspicious, make all directions auspicious, and settle in your own origin here.
दिवस् परि प्रथमं जज्ञे ऽ अग्निर् अस्माद् द्वितीयं परि जातवेदाः । तृतीयम् अप्सु नृमणा ऽ अजस्रम् इन्धान ऽ एनं जरते स्वाधीः
Agni was first born from the sky, from there Jātavedas was born a second time; the third time, with men, he is ever kindled in the waters—those who know their own nature nourish him.
विद्मा ते ऽ अग्ने त्रेधा त्रयाणि विद्मा ते धाम विभृता पुरुत्रा । विद्मा ते नाम परमं गुहा यद् विद्मा तम् उत्सं यत ऽ आजगन्थ
We know your threefold forms, O Agni; we know your abodes, distributed in many places; we know your supreme name, hidden—yes, we know that source from which you have come.
समुद्रे त्वा नृमणा ऽ अप्स्व् अन्तर् नृचक्षा ऽ ईधे दिवो अग्न ऽ ऊधन् । तृतीये त्वा रजसि तस्थिवाꣳसम् अपाम् उपस्थे महिषा ऽ अवर्धन्
In the ocean, O Agni, with men, in the waters, with men’s vision, you are kindled from the sky’s udder; in the third region you stand, and in the lap of the waters the mighty ones have increased you.
अक्रन्दद् अग्नि स्तनयन्न् इव द्यौः क्षामा रेरिहद् वीरुधः समञ्जन् । सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीम् इद्धो ऽ अख्यद् आ रोदसी भानुना भात्य् अन्तः
Agni roared, as the sky thunders; the earth trembled, the plants adorned themselves; newly born, blazing up, he declared himself—he shines between heaven and earth with his radiance.
श्रीणाम् उदारो धरुणो रयीणां मनीषाणां प्रार्पणः सोमगोपाः । वसुः सूनुः सहसो ऽ अप्सु राजा वि भात्य् अग्र ऽ उषसाम् इधानः
He is the generous supporter of riches, the foundation of treasures, the source of wisdom, the guardian of Soma; the son of strength, king in the waters, Agni shines forth at the fore, kindled among the dawns.
विश्वस्य केतुर् भुवनस्य गर्भऽ आ रोदसी ऽ अपृणाज् जायमानः । वीडुं चिद् अद्रिम् अभिनत् परायञ् जना यद् अग्निम् अयजन्त पञ्च
He is the beacon of all, the embryo of the world; being born, he filled heaven and earth; breaking even the stronghold, he went beyond, when people worshipped Agni in five ways.
उशिक् पावको अरतिः सुमेधा मर्त्येष्व् अग्निर् अमृतो नि धायि । इयर्ति धूमम् अरुषं भरिभ्रद् उच् छुक्रेण शोचिषा द्याम् इनक्षन्
The pure, shining, unwearied, wise Agni, immortal among mortals, is established; he sends forth red smoke, bearing it, and with his bright flame he touches the sky.
दृशानो रुक्म ऽ उर्व्या व्यद्यौद् दुर्मर्षम् आयुः श्रिये रुचानः । अग्निर् अमृतो ऽ अभवद् वयोभिर् यद् एनं द्यौर् जनयत् सुरेताः
He, shining, adorned the wide earth with his splendor, difficult to withstand, radiant for glory; Agni, immortal, became youthful when heaven, rich in seed, gave him birth.
यस् ते अद्य कृणवद् भद्रशोचेऽपूपं देव घृतवन्तम् अग्ने । प्र तं नय प्रतरं वस्यो ऽ अच्छाभि सुम्नं देवभक्तं यविष्ठ
Whatever auspicious offering with clarified butter someone prepares for you today, O Agni, O god of bright flame—lead that offering straight to the wealth, to the favor, to the divine grace, youngest one.
आ तं भज सौश्रवसेष्व् अग्न ऽ उक्थ ऽ उक्थ ऽ आ भज शस्यमाने । प्रियः सूर्ये प्रियो ऽ अग्ना भवात्य् उज् जातेन भिनदद् उज् जनित्वैः
Share that with him who is famed, O Agni, in the hymns—share in the praised hymn; beloved is he to Sūrya, beloved to Agni, who, being born, breaks forth, who by birth splits open.
त्वाम् अग्ने यजमाना ऽ अनु द्यून् विश्वा वसु दधिरे वार्याणि । त्वया सह द्रविणम् इच्छमाना व्रजं गोमन्तम् उशिजो वि वव्रुः
O Agni, the sacrificers have entrusted to you all desirable riches throughout the days; desiring wealth, together with you, the worshippers have dispersed to the cattle-abounding enclosure.
अस्ताव्य् अग्निर् नराꣳ सुशेवो वैश्वानर ऽ ऋषिभिः सोमगोपाः । अद्वेषे द्यावापृथिवी हुवेम देवा धत्त रयिम् अस्मे सुवीरम्
May Agni, the gracious one among men, the universal, together with the seers who guard Soma, stand firm; may we invoke Heaven and Earth without enmity; O gods, grant us wealth and heroic strength.
समिधाग्निं दुवस्यत घृतैर् बोधयतातिथिम् । आस्मिन् हव्या जुहोतन
Honor Agni with kindling; awaken the guest with offerings of ghee; offer the oblations into him.
उद् उ त्वा विश्वे देवा ऽ अग्ने भरन्तु चित्तिभिः । स नो भव शिवस् त्वꣳ सुप्रतीको विभावसुः
May all the gods raise you up, O Agni, with their thoughts; be auspicious to us, you of beautiful form, O radiant one.
प्रेद् अग्ने ज्योतिष्मान् याहि शिवेभिर् अर्चिभिष् ट्वम् । बृहद्भिर् भानुभिर् भासन् मा हिꣳसीस् तन्वा प्रजाः
Go forth, O Agni, shining with light, with auspicious flames; with great rays, with brilliance, do not harm our offspring or bodies.
अक्रन्दद् अग्नि स्तनयन्न् इव द्यौः क्षामा रेरिहद् वीरुधः समञ्जन् । सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीम् इद्धो ऽ अख्यद् आ रोदसी भानुना भात्य् अन्तः
Agni roared, thundering like the sky; the earth trembled, the plants adorned themselves; newly born, he blazed forth, spreading, shining between heaven and earth with his radiance.
प्र-प्रायम् अग्निर् भरतस्य शृण्वे वि यत् सूर्यो न रोचते बृहद् भाः । अभि यः पूरुं पृतनासु तस्थउ दीदाय दैव्यो ऽ अतिथिः शिवो नः
The fame of Agni, of the Bharata, is heard, when the sun does not shine with its great light; he who stood firm for Pūru in battles, the divine guest, shone forth, auspicious for us.
आपो देवीः प्रति गृभ्णीत भस्मैतत् स्योने कृणुध्वꣳ सुरभा ऽ उ लोके । तस्मै नमन्तां जनयः सुपत्नीर् मातेव पुत्रं बिभृताप्स्व् एनत्
Receive, O divine Waters, this sacred ash; make it gentle, fragrant in this world; may the clans bow to him, may he beget good wives; as a mother carries her son, so bear away this sin in the waters.
अप्स्व् अग्ने सधिष् टव सौषधीर् अनु रुध्यसे । गर्भै सन् जायसे पुनः
O Agni, you dwell among the waters, together with the plants; you are born again from their wombs.
गर्भोऽअस्य् ओषधीनां गर्भो वनस्पतीनाम् । गर्भो विश्वस्य भूतस्याग्ने गर्भोऽअपाम् असि
You are the embryo of the plants, the embryo of the trees, the embryo of all beings, O Agni, you are the embryo of the waters.
प्रसद्य भस्मना योनिम् अपश् च पृथिवीम् अग्ने । सꣳसृज्य मातृभिष् ट्वं ज्योतिष्मान् पुनर् आसदः
Having entered your womb with ash, and the waters and the earth, O Agni, you, shining, are joined with your mothers and sit again.
पुनर् आसद्य सदनम् अपश् च पृथिवीम् अग्ने । शेषे मातुर् यथोपस्थे ऽन्तर् अस्याꣳ शिवतमः
Having returned again to your seat, to the waters and the earth, O Agni, you lie as in the lap of your mother, most auspicious within her.
पुनर् ऊर्जा निवर्तस्व पुनर् अग्न ऽ इषायुषा । पुनर् नः पाह्य् अꣳहसः
Return again with nourishment, return, O Agni, with food and life; protect us again from harm.
सह रय्या नि वर्तस्वाग्ने पिन्वस्व धारया । विश्वप्स्न्या विश्वतस् परि
Return with wealth, O Agni, thrive with sustenance; spread out on every side, everywhere.
