अहर्-अहर् अप्रयावं भरन्तोऽश्वायेव तिष्ठते घासम् अस्मै । रायस्पोषेण सम् इषा मदन्तो ऽग्ने मा ते प्रतिवेशा रिषाम
Day after day, bearing without weariness, he stands like a horse for whom grass is brought; with the nourishment of wealth, rejoicing together with food, O Agni, may we not suffer harm from your neighbors.
नाभा पृथिव्याः समिधाने ऽ अग्नौ रायस्पोषाय बृहते हवामहे । इरंमदं बृहदुक्थ्यं यजत्रं जेतारम् अग्निं पृतनासु सासहिम्
At the navel of the earth, in the kindling of Agni, for the increase of wealth, we call upon the great one; the joy-giving, much-praised, worshipful Agni, the conqueror, the mighty one in battles.
याः सेना ऽ अभीत्वरीर् आव्याधिनीर् उगणा ऽ उत । ये स्तेना ये च तस्करास् ताꣳस् ते ऽ अग्ने ऽपि दधाम्य् आस्ये
Those armies, fearless, attacking, and those bands—also those who are thieves and robbers—O Agni, I place them all into your mouth.
दꣳष्ट्राभ्यां मलिम्लून् जम्भ्यैस् तस्कराꣳ ऽउत । हनुभ्याꣳ स्तेनान् भगवस् ताꣳस् त्वं खाद सुखादितान्
With your jaws, devour the filth-covered and the robbers; with your teeth, O blessed one, the thieves—consume them, those who are easily consumed.
ये जनेषु मलिम्लव स्तेनासस् तस्करा वने । ये कक्षेष्व् अघायवस् ताꣳस् ते दधामि जम्भयोः
Those among people who are filthy, thieves, and robbers in the forest, and those evil-doers in the thickets—I place them between your jaws.
यो ऽ अस्मभ्यम् अरातीयाद् यश् च नो द्वेषते जनः । निन्दाद् यो ऽ अस्मान् धिप्साच् च सर्वं तं भस्मसा कुरु
Whoever is hostile to us, and whoever among people hates us, whoever reviles or slanders us—make all of them into ashes.
सꣳशितं मे ब्रह्म सꣳशितं वीर्यं बलम् । सꣳशितं क्षत्रं जिष्णु यस्याहम् अस्मि पुरोहितः
My prayer is sharpened, my strength and power are sharpened; the authority is sharpened of the victorious one for whom I am the priest.
उद् एषां बाहू ऽ अतिरम् उद् वर्चो ऽ अथो बलम् । क्षिणोमि ब्रह्मणामित्रान् उन् नयामि स्वाꣳ अहम्
Their arms are lifted up, their splendor and strength as well; by prayer I destroy the foes, I lead my own forward.
अन्नपते ऽन्नस्य नो देह्य् अनमीवस्य शुष्मिणः । प्र-प्र दातारं तारिष ऽऊर्जं नो धेहि द्विपदे चतुष्पदे
O Lord of food, grant us food, vigorous and free from disease; grant us the giver who crosses over, bestow strength for bipeds and quadrupeds.
दृशानो रुक्म ऽ उर्व्या व्यद्यौद् दुर्मर्षम् आयुः श्रिये रुचानः । अग्निर् अमृतो ऽ अभवद् वयोभिर् यद् एनं द्यौर् जनयत् सुरेताः
Shining, golden, he blazed forth over the wide earth, difficult to endure, his life radiant for glory; Agni, the immortal, was born with his powers when the heaven, rich in seed, gave him birth.
नक्तोषासा समनसा विरूपे धापयेते शिशुम् एकꣳ समीची । द्यावाक्षामा रुक्मो ऽ अन्तर् वि भाति देवा ऽ अग्निं धारयन् द्रविणोदाः
Night and dawn, of one mind yet of different forms, nurture the single child together; heaven and earth, the golden one, shines forth within, the gods, givers of wealth, uphold Agni.
विश्वा रूपाणि प्रति मुञ्चते कविः प्रासावीद् भद्रं द्विपदे चतुष्पदे । वि नाकम् अख्यत् सविता वरेण्योऽनु प्रयाणम् उषसो वि राजति
The sage puts on all forms, he bestows prosperity on bipeds and quadrupeds; Savitar, the worthy, has shown the highest, he shines forth along the path of dawn.
सुपर्णोऽसि गरुत्माꣳस् त्रिवृत् ते शिरो गायत्रं चक्षुर् बृहद्रथन्तरे पक्षौ । स्तोम ऽ आत्मा छन्दाꣳस्य् अङ्गानि यजूꣳषि नाम । साम ते तनूर् वामदेव्यं यज्ञायज्ञियं पुच्छं धिष्ण्याः शफाः । सुपर्णो ऽसि गरुत्मान् दिवं गच्छ स्वः पत
You are the splendid eagle, Garutmat; threefold is your head, the Gāyatrī your eye, the Bṛhadrathantara your wings; praise is your soul, meters your limbs, Yajus your name; Sāman is your body, Vāmadeva your tail fit for sacrifice, the platforms your thighs, the claws your feet; you are the splendid eagle, Garutmat—go to heaven, fly to the sun.
विष्णोः क्रमोऽसि सपत्नहा गायत्रं छन्द ऽ आ रोह पृथिवीम् अनु वि क्रमस्व । विष्णोः क्रमोऽस्य् अभिमातिहा त्रैष्टुभं छन्द ऽ आ रोहान्तरिक्षम् अनु वि क्रमस्व । विष्णोः क्रमोऽस्य् अरातीयतो हन्ता जागतं छन्द ऽ आ रोह दिवम् अनु वि क्रमस्व । विष्णोः क्रमोऽसि शत्रूयतो हन्ताऽऽनुष्टुभं छन्द ऽ आ रोह दिशोऽनु वि क्रमस्व
You are the stride of Viṣṇu, the slayer of rivals; ascend with the Gāyatrī meter, stride forth upon the earth; you are the stride of Viṣṇu, the overcomer of adversaries; ascend with the Triṣṭubh meter, stride forth in the atmosphere; you are the stride of Viṣṇu, the destroyer of enemies; ascend with the Jagatī meter, stride forth in heaven; you are the stride of Viṣṇu, the slayer of foes; ascend with the Anuṣṭubh meter, stride forth in the directions.
अक्रन्दद् अग्नि स्तनयन्न् इव द्यौः क्षामा रेरिहद् वीरुधः समञ्जन् । सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीम् इद्धोऽ अख्यद् आ रोदसी भानुना भात्य् अन्तः
Agni roared, thundering like the sky; the earth trembled, the plants were adorned; born at once, he blazed forth, shining between heaven and earth with his radiance.
अग्नेऽभ्यावर्तिन्न् अभि मा नि वर्तस्वायुषा वर्चसा प्रजया धनेन । सन्या मेधया रय्या पोषेण
O Agni, return to us, do not turn away; with life, splendor, offspring, and wealth, with intelligence, riches, and nourishment.
अग्ने ऽ अङ्गिरः शतं ते सन्त्वावृतः सहस्रं त ऽ उपावृतः । अधा पोषस्य पोषेण पुनर् नो नष्टम् आ कृधि पुनर् नो रयिम् आ कृधि
O Agni, Angiras, may a hundred be your uncovered, a thousand your covered; then, with abundance upon abundance, restore to us what was lost, restore to us wealth.
पुनर् ऊर्जा नि वर्तस्व पुनर् अग्न ऽ इषायुषा । पुनर् नः पाह्य् अꣳहसः
Return again with nourishment, return, O Agni, with food and life; protect us again from harm.
सह रय्या नि वर्तस्वाग्ने पिन्वस्व धारया । विश्वप्स्न्या विश्वतस् परि
Turn back together with wealth, O Agni; swell forth with sustenance, encompassing all from every side.
आ त्वाहार्षम् अन्तर् अभूर् ध्रुवस् तिष्ठाविचाचलिः । विशस् त्वा सर्वा वाञ्छन्तु मा त्वद् राष्ट्रम् अधि भ्रशत्
I have brought you here from within the earth, firm and unmoving; may all the people desire you, may your kingdom not fall away from you.
उद् उत्तमं वरुण पाशम् अस्मद् अवाधमं वि मध्यमꣳ श्रथाय । अथा वयम् आदित्य व्रते तवानागसो ऽ अदितये स्याम
O Varuṇa, lift away from us the highest noose, loosen the middle, and remove the lowest; then, O Āditya, may we, sinless, belong to your rule of truth and to Aditi.
अग्रे बृहन्न् उषसामूर्ध्वो ऽ अस्थान् निर्जगन्वान् तमसो ज्योतिषागात् । अग्निर् भानुना रुशता स्वङ्ग ऽ आ जातो विश्वा सद्मान्य् अप्राः
At the fore, great among the dawns, he rose high, having driven away darkness, he came with light; Agni, shining with his radiant form, was born and filled all dwellings.
हꣳसः शुचिषद् वसुर् अन्तरिक्षसद् होता वेदिषद् अतिथिर् दुरोणसत् । नृषद् वरसद् ऋतसद् व्योमसद् अब्जा गोजा ऽ ऋतजा अद्रिजा ऽ ऋतम् बृहत्
The swan dwells in purity, the wealth-bringer in the midspace, the priest on the altar, the guest in the house; he sits among men, among the gods, in truth, in the sky; born of waters, of cows, of truth, of mountains—truth, the great.
सीद त्वं मातुर् अस्या ऽ उपस्थे विश्वान्य् अग्ने वयुनानि विद्वान् । मैनां तपसा मार्चिषाऽभिशोचीर् अन्तर् अस्याꣳ शुक्रज्योतिर् वि भाहि
Sit, you, in the lap of this mother, O Agni, knowing all the paths; do not burn her with your heat or flame—shine forth as the bright light within her.
अन्तर् अग्ने रुचा त्वम् उखायाः सदने स्वे । तस्यास् त्वꣳ हरसा तपन् जातवेदः शिवो भव
Within, O Agni, with your radiance, in the hearth’s own seat; with your power, blazing, O Jātavedas, be auspicious.
शिवो भूत्वा मह्यम् अग्नेऽ अथो सीद शिवस् त्वम् । शिवः कृत्वा दिशः सर्वाः स्वं योनिम् इहासदः
Having become auspicious, O Agni, sit for me; being auspicious, make all directions auspicious, and settle in your own origin here.
दिवस् परि प्रथमं जज्ञे ऽ अग्निर् अस्माद् द्वितीयं परि जातवेदाः । तृतीयम् अप्सु नृमणा ऽ अजस्रम् इन्धान ऽ एनं जरते स्वाधीः
Agni was first born from the sky, from there Jātavedas was born a second time; the third time, with men, he is ever kindled in the waters—those who know their own nature nourish him.
विद्मा ते ऽ अग्ने त्रेधा त्रयाणि विद्मा ते धाम विभृता पुरुत्रा । विद्मा ते नाम परमं गुहा यद् विद्मा तम् उत्सं यत ऽ आजगन्थ
We know your threefold forms, O Agni; we know your abodes, distributed in many places; we know your supreme name, hidden—yes, we know that source from which you have come.
समुद्रे त्वा नृमणा ऽ अप्स्व् अन्तर् नृचक्षा ऽ ईधे दिवो अग्न ऽ ऊधन् । तृतीये त्वा रजसि तस्थिवाꣳसम् अपाम् उपस्थे महिषा ऽ अवर्धन्
In the ocean, O Agni, with men, in the waters, with men’s vision, you are kindled from the sky’s udder; in the third region you stand, and in the lap of the waters the mighty ones have increased you.
अक्रन्दद् अग्नि स्तनयन्न् इव द्यौः क्षामा रेरिहद् वीरुधः समञ्जन् । सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीम् इद्धो ऽ अख्यद् आ रोदसी भानुना भात्य् अन्तः
Agni roared, as the sky thunders; the earth trembled, the plants adorned themselves; newly born, blazing up, he declared himself—he shines between heaven and earth with his radiance.
