Agni, broad, lord of order, accepting, Agni, broad, lord of order, let him enter the clarified butter, svāhā. Made with svāhā, with the rays of Sūrya, strive for the central offering among those born together.
सवित्रा प्रसवित्रा सरस्वत्या वाचा त्वष्ट्रा रूपैः पूष्णा पशुभिर् इन्द्रेणास्मे बृहस्पतिना ब्रह्मणा वरुणेनौजसाग्निना तेजसा सोमेन राज्ञा विष्णुना दशम्या देवतया प्रसूतः प्र सर्पामि
By Savitṛ, the prompter, by Sarasvatī's speech, by Tvaṣṭṛ's forms, by Pūṣan's cattle, by Indra, by Bṛhaspati, by Brahman, by Varuṇa's strength, by Agni's brilliance, by Soma the king, by Viṣṇu, by the tenth deity, I am set forth.
अश्विभ्यां पच्यस्व । सरस्वत्यै पच्यस्व । इन्द्राय सुत्राम्णे पच्यस्व । वायुः पूतः पवित्रेण प्रत्यङ्क् सोमो अतिस्रुतः । इन्द्रस्य युज्यः सखा
Cook for the Aśvins. Cook for Sarasvatī. Cook for Indra, the well-woven. Vāyu is purified by the purifier; Soma is well-flowing. Indra's yoked friend.
कुविद् अङ्ग यवमन्तो वयं चिद् यथा दान्त्य् अनुपूर्वं वियूय । इहेहैषां कृणुहि भोजनानि ये बर्हिषो नम ऽ उक्तिं यजन्ति । उपयामगृहीतो ऽस्य् अश्विभ्यां त्वा सरस्वत्यै त्वेन्द्राय त्वा सुत्राम्णे
May we, indeed, with barley, as is fitting, distribute the gifts in due order. Here, make ready the food for those who, sitting on the sacred grass, offer praise and sacrifice. I have taken you up for the Aśvins, for Sarasvatī, for Indra, the well-woven.
वयꣳ सुरामम् अश्विना नमुचाव् आसुरे सचा । विपिपाना शुभस् पती इन्द्रं कर्मस्व् आवतम्
We, with the Aśvins, drank the surā with Namuci the Asura; O shining lords, ever-drinking, support Indra in the rites.
पुत्रम् इव पितराव् अश्विनोभेन्द्रावथुः काव्यैर् दꣳसनाभिः । यत् सुरामं व्यपिबः शचीभिः सरस्वती त्वा मघवन्न् अभिष्णक्
Like parents their son, the Aśvins protected Indra with their skills and remedies; when you, O mighty one, drank the surā with the Śacīs, Sarasvatī, O generous one, praised you.
युञ्जानः प्रथमं मनस् तत्वाय सविता धियम् । अग्नेर् ज्योतिर् निचाय्य पृथिव्या ऽ अध्य् आभरत्
Harnessing the first thought for that truth, Savitṛ impelled the understanding; having kindled Agni's light, he brought it upon the earth.
युक्तेन मनसा वयं देवस्य सवितुः सवे । स्वर्ग्याय शक्त्या
With a yoked mind, we seek the impulse of god Savitṛ, with the power that leads to heaven.
युक्त्वाय सविता देवान्त् स्वर्यतो धिया दिवम् । बृहज् ज्योतिः करिष्यतः सविता प्र सुवाति तान्
The divine Savitṛ, joined with the gods, by inspired thought ascends to heaven; may Savitṛ, the great light, inspire them to action.
युञ्जते मन ऽ उत युञ्जते धियो विप्रा विप्रस्य बृहतो विपश्चितः । वि होत्रा दधे वयुनाविद् एक ऽ इन् मही देवस्य सवितुः परिष्टुतिः
The sages harness the mind, they harness their thoughts, the wise of the wise, the great seer; he has established the sacrificial fires, knowing the rites, and the vast praise of the god Savitṛ surrounds him.
युजे वां ब्रह्म पूर्व्यं नमोभिर् वि श्लोक ऽ एतु पथ्येव सूरेः । शृण्वन्तु विश्वे ऽ अमृतस्य पुत्रा ऽ आ ये धामानि दिव्यानि तस्थुः
With reverence, let us yoke your ancient prayer; let the hymn go forth like a chariot on its path; let all you sons of immortality who stand in the divine abodes listen.
यस्य प्रयाणम् अन्व् अन्य ऽ इद् ययुर् देवा देवस्य महिमानम् ओजसा । यः पार्थिवानि विममे स ऽ एतशो रजासि देवः सविता महित्वना
After whose departure the other gods have gone, by the might of the god, the greatness of the divine one; he who measured out the earthly realms, that god Savitṛ, by his greatness, has established the regions.
देव सवितः प्र सुव यज्ञं प्र सुव यज्ञपतिं भगाय । दिव्यो गन्धर्वः केतपूः केतं नः पुनातु वाचस् पतिर् वाचं नः स्वदतु
O god Savitṛ, inspire the sacrifice, inspire the lord of the sacrifice for good fortune; may the celestial Gandharva, the knower of signs, purify our inspiration; may the lord of speech sweeten our words.
इमं नो देव सवितर् यज्ञं प्र णय देवाव्यꣳ सखिविदꣳ सत्राजितं धनजितꣳ स्वर्जितम् । ऋचा स्तोमꣳ समर्धय गायत्रेण रथन्तरं बृहद् गायत्रवर्तनि स्वाहा
Lead this sacrifice of ours, O god Savitṛ, to the divine, to friendship, to victory in the assembly, to the gaining of wealth, to the winning of heaven; strengthen our hymn with the Gāyatrī, the Rathantara, the great Gāyatrī measure—svāhā.
देवस्य त्वा सवितुः प्रसवे ऽश्विनोर् बाहुभ्यां पूष्णो हस्ताभ्याम् । आ ददे गायत्रेण छन्दसाङ्गिरस्वत् पृथिव्याः सधस्थाद् अग्निं पुरीष्यम् अङ्गिरस्वद् आ भर त्रैष्टुभेन छन्दसाङ्गिरस्वत्
By the impulse of god Savitṛ, by the arms of the Aśvins, by the hands of Pūṣan, I place you with the Gāyatrī metre, O Angiras, from the seat of earth; bring forth the purifying Agni, O Angiras, with the Triṣṭubh metre.
अभ्रिर् असि नार्य् असि त्वया वयम् अग्निꣳ शकेम खनितुꣳ सधस्थ आ जागतेन छन्दसाङ्गिरस्वत्
You are the cloud, you are the woman; with you may we be able to kindle Agni from the seat, with the Jagatī metre, O Angiras.
हस्त ऽ आधाय सविता बिभ्रद् अभ्रिꣳ हिरण्ययीम् । अग्नेर् ज्योतिर् निचाय्य पृथिव्या ऽ अध्य् आ भर । आनुष्टुभेन छन्दसाङ्गिरस्वत्
Placing the golden cloud in his hand, Savitṛ bears it; drawing forth Agni's light, bring it up from the earth; with the Anuṣṭubh metre, O Angiras.
प्रतूर्तं वाजिन्न् आ द्रव वरिष्ठाम् अनु सम्वतम् । दिवि ते जन्म परमम् अन्तरिक्षे तव नाभिः पृथिव्याम् अधि योनिर् इत्
Run forward, O swift one, to the prize, following the best course; your highest birth is in heaven, your navel is in the midspace, your womb is on earth.
युञ्जाथाꣳ रासभं युवम् अस्मिन् यामे वृषण्वसू । अग्निं भरन्तम् अस्मयुम्
May you two yoke the ass in this rite, O mighty ones rich in gifts, bearing Agni, the bringer of blessings.
योगे-योगे तवस्तरं वाजे-वाजे हवामहे । सखाय ऽ इन्द्रमूतये
In every union, in every contest, we call upon the most powerful, as friends, for Indra's aid.
प्रतूर्वन्न् एह्य् अवक्रामन्न् अशस्तो रुद्रस्य गाणपत्यं मयोभूर् एहि । उर्व् अन्तरिक्षं वीहि । स्वस्तिगव्यूतिर् अभयानि कृण्वन् पूष्णा सयुजा सह
Come forward, advancing, turning aside misfortune; come, O Rudra's lord of hosts, bringer of joy; traverse the wide midspace; with Pūṣan as ally, making the herds safe, granting well-being and fearlessness.
पृथिव्याः सधस्थाद् अग्निं पुरीष्यम् अङ्गिरस्वद् आ भर । अग्निं पुरीष्यम् अङ्गिरस्वद् अच्छेमः । ऽ अग्निं पुरीष्यम् अङ्गिरस्वद् भरिष्यामः
From the seat of earth, bring forth the purifying Agni, O Angiras; may we obtain the purifying Agni, O Angiras; we shall bring forth the purifying Agni, O Angiras.
अन्व् अग्निर् उषसाम् अग्रम् अख्यद् अन्व् अहानि प्रथमो जातवेदाः । अनु सूर्यस्य पुरुत्रा च रश्मीन् अनु द्यावापृथिवी ऽ आ ततन्थ
Agni followed the forefront of the dawns, he, the knower of all births, was first through the days; he extended the many rays of the sun, and stretched out heaven and earth.
आगत्य वाज्य् अध्वानꣳ सर्वा मृधो विधूनुते । अग्निꣳ सधस्थे महति चक्षुषा नि चिकीषते
Having come, the swift one travels the path, shaking off all hostilities; Agni, in the great seat, wishes to be seen with his eye.
आक्रम्य वाजिन् पृथिवीम् अग्निम् इच्छ रुचा त्वम् । भूम्या वृक्त्वाय नो ब्रूहि यतः खनेम तं वयम्
Having stepped upon the earth, O swift one, seek Agni with your radiance; tell us, for the one who seeks, where we may dig him up.
द्यौस् ते पृष्ठं पृथिवी सधस्थम् आत्मान्तरिक्षꣳ समुद्रो योनिः । विख्याय चक्षुषा त्वम् अभि तिष्ठ पृतन्यतः
Heaven is your back, earth your seat, the midspace your self, the ocean your womb; having made yourself manifest with vision, stand firm against the attackers.
उत् क्राम महते सौभगायास्माद् आस्थानाद् द्रविणोदा वाजिन् । वयꣳ स्याम सुमतौ पृथिव्या ऽ अग्निं खनन्त ऽ उपस्थे ऽ अस्याः
Step forth for great good fortune from this seat, O giver of wealth, O swift one; may we be of good counsel upon the earth, as we dig Agni in her lap.
उद् अक्रमीद् द्रविणोदा वाज्य् अर्वाकः सु लोकꣳ सुकृतं पृथिव्याम् । ततः खनेम सुप्रतीकम् अग्निꣳ स्वो रुहाणा ऽ अधि नाकम् उत्तमम्
The giver of wealth, the swift one, has stepped forth nearby to the good world, the well-made earth; from there let us dig Agni with beautiful face, ascending by his own power to the highest heaven.
आ त्वा जिघर्मि मनसा घृतेन प्रतिक्षियन्तं भुवनानि विश्वा । पृथुं तिरश्चा वयसा बृहन्तं व्यचिष्ठम् अन्नै रभसं दृशानम्
To you I approach with mind and with ghee, you who pervade all the worlds; vast, spreading wide with strength, great, most extensive in food, eager, and shining.
आ विश्वतः प्रत्यञ्चं जिघर्म्य् अरक्षसा मनसा तज् जुषेत । मर्यश्री स्पृहयद्वर्णो ऽ अग्निर् नाभिमृशे तन्वा जर्भुराणः
From every side I approach you, may you accept this with a mind free from harm; Agni, radiant with youthful beauty, desired in form, I touch you with my body, you who are ever growing.
