यस्मिन्न् ऋचः साम यजूꣳषि यस्मिन् प्रतिष्ठिता रथनाभाव् इवाराः । यस्मिꣳश् चित्तꣳ सर्वम् ओतं प्रजानं तन् मे मनः शिवसंकल्पम् अस्तु
In which the Ṛc, Sāma, and Yajus verses are established, as spokes in the hub of a wheel; in which the consciousness of all beings is woven—may my mind be endowed with auspicious resolve.
सुषारथिर् अश्वान् इव यन् मनुष्यान् नेनीयते ऽभीशुभिर् वाजिन ऽ इव । हृत्प्रतिष्ठं यद् अजिरं जविष्ठं तन् मे मनः शिवसंकल्पम् अस्तु
As a skilled charioteer guides horses, so it directs men with reins, like swift steeds; established in the heart, swift and restless—may my mind be endowed with auspicious resolve.
पितुं नु स्तोषं महो धर्माणं तविषीम् । यस्य त्रितो व्य् ओजसा वृत्रं विपर्वम् अर्दयत्
Now I praise the mighty, righteous father, the powerful one; whose strength, like that of Trita, shattered the many-headed Vṛtra.
अन्व् इद् अनुमते त्वं मन्यासै शं च नस् कृधि । क्रत्वे दक्षाय नो हिनु प्र ण ऽ आयूꣳषि तारिषः
With Anumati's favor, may you grant us well-being; inspire us for resolve and skill, and lead us across the span of life.
अनु नो ऽद्यानुमतिर् यज्ञं देवेषु मन्यताम् । अग्निश् च हव्यवाहनो भवतं दाशुषे मयः
May Anumati today accept our sacrifice among the gods; and may Agni, the bearer of offerings, bring delight to the worshipper.
सिनीवालि पृथुष्टुके या देवानाम् असि स्वसा । जुषस्व हव्यम् आहुतं प्रजां देवि दिदिड्ढि नः
Sinīvālī, broad-hipped, you are the sister among the gods; accept the offered oblation, O goddess, and grant us offspring.
पञ्च नद्यः सरस्वतीम् अपि यन्ति सस्रोतसः । सरस्वती तु पञ्चधा सो देशे ऽभवत् सरित्
Five rivers, along with Sarasvatī, flow together with their currents; Sarasvatī, in fivefold form, became a river in that land.
त्वम् अग्ने प्रथमो ऽ अङ्गिरा ऽ ऋषिर् देवो देवानाम् अभवः शिवः सखा । तव व्रते कवयो विद्मनापसो ऽजायन्त मरुतो भ्राजदृष्टयः
You, Agni, were the first among the Angiras sages, the divine among gods, the auspicious friend; by your command, poets and wise ones were born, and the Maruts with shining vision.
त्वं नो ऽ अग्ने तव देव पायुभिर् मघोनो रक्ष तन्वश् च वन्द्य । त्राता तोकस्य तनये गवाम् अस्य् अनिमेषꣳ रक्षणस् तव व्रते
Protect us, Agni, with your divine guardianship, O generous one, and safeguard our bodies, worthy of praise; be the protector of children, offspring, and cattle, watchful in your vow.
उत्तानायाम् अव भरा चिकित्वान्त् सद्यः प्रवीता वृषणं जजान । अरुषस्तूपो रुशद् अस्य पाज ऽ इडायास् पुत्रो वयुने ऽजनिष्ट
On the outstretched earth, the wise one quickly gave birth to the vigorous bull; the reddish pillar, shining in his strength, was born as the son of Iḍā, in skill.
इडायास् त्वा पदे वयं नाभा पृथिव्या ऽ अधि । जातवेदो नि धीमह्य् अग्ने हव्याय वोढवे
At the foot of Iḍā, at the navel of the earth, O Jātavedas, we place you, Agni, to carry our offerings.
प्र मन्महे शवसानाय शूषम् आङ्गूषं गिर्वणसे ऽ अङ्गिरस्वत् । सुवृक्तिभिः स्तुवत ऽ ऋग्मियायार्चामार्कं नरे विश्रुताय
We praise the powerful one with hymns, the radiant, the Angiras-born; with well-composed verses, let us sing the Ṛg-hymn and the song to the renowned man.
प्र वो महे महि नमो भरध्वम् आङ्गूष्यꣳ शवसानाय साम । येना नः पूर्वे पितरः पदज्ञा ऽ अर्चन्तो ऽ अङ्गिरसो गा ऽ अविन्दन्
Offer great homage to the mighty one, with song and praise; by whom our forefathers, the Angiras sages, found the cows through their hymns.
इच्छन्ति त्वा सोम्यासः सखायः सुन्वन्ति सोमं दधति प्रयाꣳसि । तितिक्षन्ते ऽ अभिशस्तिं जनानाम् इन्द्र त्वद् आ कश् चन हि प्रकेतः
Your friends, O Indra, desire you, the delightful one; they press Soma and prepare offerings; they endure the reproach of men, for none but you, Indra, is truly wise.
न ते दूरे परमा चिद् रजाꣳस्य् अस्या तु प्र याहि हरिवो हरिभ्याम् । स्थिराय वृष्णे सवना कृतेमा युक्ता ग्रावाणः समिधाने ऽ अग्नौ
For you, O supreme one, no distances are far; now go forth with your two bays, O wielder of the mace. These stones, yoked for the steadfast Bull, are prepared at the fire for the pressing.
अषाढं युत्सु पृतनासु पप्रिꣳ स्वर्षाम् अप्सां वृजनस्य गोपाम् । भरेषुजाꣳ सुक्षितिꣳ सुश्रवसं जयन्तं त्वाम् अनु मदेम सोम
Unconquered in battle, victorious in wars, giver of light, guardian of the waters and the people—may we follow you, O Soma, who brings prosperity, fame, and triumph in contests.
सोमो धेनुꣳ सोमो ऽ अर्वन्तम् आशुꣳ सोमो वीरं कर्मण्यं ददाति । सादन्यं विदथ्यꣳ सभेयं पितृश्रवणं यो ददाशद् अस्मै
Soma gives the cow, Soma gives the swift horse, Soma gives the heroic, diligent man; he gives a companion, wisdom, assembly, and ancestral praise to the one who offers to him.
त्वम् इमा ऽ ओषधीः सोम विश्वास् त्वम् अपो ऽ अजनयस् त्वं गाः । त्वम् आ ततन्थोर्व् अन्तरिक्षं त्वं ज्योतिषा वि तमो ववर्थ
You, Soma, created all these plants, you brought forth the waters, you made the cows; you stretched out the wide midspace, and with your light you drove away the darkness.
देवेन नो मनसा देव सोम रायो भागꣳ सहसावन्न् अभि युध्य । मा त्वा तनद् ईशिषे वीर्यस्योभयेभ्यः प्र चिकित्सा गविष्टौ
With divine mind, O god Soma, mighty one, contend for our share of wealth; let not the lord of strength deprive you—be vigilant for both sides in the contest for the prize.
अष्टौ व्यख्यत् ककुभः पृथिव्यास् त्री धन्व योजना सप्त सिन्धून् । हिरण्याक्षः सविता देव ऽ आगाद् दधद् रत्ना दाशुषे वार्याणि
Eight are the regions of earth, three the distances of the desert, seven the rivers; the golden-eyed god Savitar has come, bearing treasures and precious gifts for the worshipper.
हिरण्यपाणिः सविता विचर्षणिर् उभे द्यावापृथिवी ऽ अन्तर् ईयते । अपामीवां बाधते वेति सूर्यम् अभि कृष्णेन रजसा द्याम् ऋणोति
Golden-handed, all-wise Savitar traverses both heaven and earth; he drives away disease, he approaches the sun, and with his dark mantle he covers the sky.
हिरण्यहस्तो ऽ असुरः सुनीथः सुमृडीकः स्ववाँ यात्व् अर्वाङ् । अपसेधन् रक्षसो यातुधानान् अस्थाद् देवः प्रतिदोषं गृणानः
Golden-handed, the gracious and benevolent god, the Asura, comes near with good guidance; he drives away demons and sorcerers—the god stands guard at every dawn, praised by the singers.
ये ते पन्थाः सवितः पूर्व्यासो ऽरेणवः सुकृता ऽ अन्तरिक्षे । तेभिर् नो ऽ अद्य पथिभिः सुगेभी रक्षा च नो ऽ अधि च ब्रूहि देव
Those ancient, dustless, well-made paths of yours, O Savitar, in the midspace—by those easy roads protect us today, and speak for us, O god, as our guardian.
उभा पिबतम् अश्विनोभा नः शर्म यच्छतम् । अविद्रियाभिर् ऊतिभिः
Both of you, Ashvins, drink; both grant us your protection, with unfailing aid and support.
अप्नस्वतीम् अश्विना वाचम् अस्मे कृतं नो दस्रा वृषणा मनीषाम् । अद्यूत्ये ऽवसे नि ह्वये वां वृधे च नो भवतं वाजसातौ
O Ashvins, grant us inspired speech; O wondrous, mighty ones, bestow wisdom upon us. In need and in contest I call upon you—may you be our strength in the pursuit of victory.
द्युभिर् अक्तुभिः परि पातम् अस्मान् अरिष्टेभिर् अश्विना सौभगेभिः । तन् नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्ताम् अदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी ऽ उत द्यौः
Guard us, O Ashvins, by day and by night, with unharmed good fortune; may Mitra, Varuna, Aditi, the river, the earth, and the sky protect us from harm.
आ कृष्णेन रजसा वर्तमानो निवेशयन्न् अमृतं मर्त्यं च । हिरण्ययेन सविता रथेना देवो याति भुवनानि पश्यन्
Moving in the dark expanse, establishing both immortal and mortal beings, the god Savitar goes, seeing all the worlds, with his golden chariot.
आ रात्रि पर्थिवꣳ रजः पितुर् अप्रायि धामभिः । दिवः सदाꣳसि बृहती वि तिष्ठस ऽ आ त्वेषं वर्तते तमः
Night has spread over the earthly realm with her lights; she stands in the great abodes of heaven, and her mighty darkness prevails.
उषस् तच् चित्रम् आ भरास्मभ्यं वाजिनीवति । येन तोकं च तनयं च धामहे
O Dawn, bring us that brilliant light, rich in horses, by which we may sustain both offspring and descendants.
प्रातर् अग्निं प्रातर् इन्द्रꣳ हवामहे प्रातर् मित्रावरुणा प्रातर् अश्विना । प्रातर् भगं पूषणं ब्रह्मणस्पतिं प्रातः सोमम् उत रुद्रꣳ हुवेम
In the morning we call Agni, in the morning Indra, in the morning Mitra and Varuna, in the morning the Ashvins; in the morning we invoke Bhaga, Pushan, Brahmanaspati, Soma, and Rudra.
