हरयो धूमकेतवो वातजूता ऽ उप द्यवि । यतन्ते वृथग् अग्नयः
The tawny ones, banners of smoke, driven by the wind, strive upward to the sky; the Agnis move separately.
यजा नो मित्रावरुणा यजा देवाꣳ २ऽ ऋतं बृहत् । अग्ने यक्षि स्वं दमम्
Offer for us, O Mitra and Varuṇa, offer to the gods, to the great truth; O Agni, offer to your own house.
युक्ष्वा हि देवहूतमाꣳ२ऽ अश्वाꣳ२ऽ अग्ने रथीर् इव । नि होता पूर्व्यः सदः
Yoke, indeed, O Agni, the gods' summoned horses, like charioteers; let the ancient Hotṛ sit in the seat.
द्वे विरूपे चरतः स्वर्थे ऽ अन्यान्या वत्सम् उप धापयेते । हरिर् अन्यस्यां भवति स्वधावाञ्छुक्रो ऽ अन्यस्यां ददृशे सुवर्चाः
Two of diverse forms move toward the light; each brings forth a calf. The tawny one is in one, self-sustaining; the bright one, radiant, is seen in the other.
अयम् इह प्रथमो धायि धातृभिर् होता यजिष्ठो ऽ अध्वरेष्व् ईड्यः । यम् अप्नवानो भृगवो विरुरुचुर् वनेषु चित्रं विभ्वं विशे-विशे
Here, he was first established by the creators, the Hotṛ most fit for sacrifice, worthy at the rituals; whom the Bhrigus, the Apnavānas, made manifest in the forests, wondrous, shining, in every clan.
त्रीणि शता त्री सहस्राण्य् अग्निं त्रिꣳशच् च देवा नव चासपर्यन् । औक्षन् घृतैर् अस्तृणन् बर्हिर् अस्मा ऽ आद् इद् होतारं न्य् असादयन्त
Three hundred and three thousand and thirty-nine gods served Agni; they anointed him with ghee, spread the sacrificial grass for him, and thus installed him as Hotṛ.
मूर्धानं दिवो ऽ अरतिं पृथिव्या वैश्वानरम् ऋत ऽ आ जातम् अग्निम् । कविꣳ सम्राजम् अतिथिं जनानाम् आसन्न् आ पात्रं जनयन्त देवाः
On the summit of heaven and at the foundation of earth, the gods generated Agni, the universal fire, born from truth; the sage, the sovereign, the guest of the people, they brought near as the vessel.
अग्निर् वृत्राणि जङ्घनद् द्रविणस्युर् विपन्यया । समिद्धः शुक्र ऽ आहुतः
Agni, destroyer of obstacles, bestower of wealth through insight, shines brightly when kindled and offered with pure oblation.
विश्वेभिः सोम्यं मध्व् अग्न ऽ इन्द्रेण वायुना । पिबा मित्रस्य धामभिः
With all the gods, O Agni, drink the Soma-honey together with Indra and Vayu, by the powers of Mitra.
आ यद् इषे नृपतिं तेज ऽ आनट् शुचि रेतो निषिक्तं द्यौर् अभीके । अग्निः शर्धम् अनवद्यं युवानꣳ स्वाध्यं जनयत् सूदयच् च
When, for strength, the lord of men is summoned, the pure seed is poured out, heaven is attentive; Agni brings forth a faultless, youthful host, self-born, and causes it to flourish.
अग्ने शर्ध महते सौभगाय तव द्युम्नान्य् उत्तमानि सन्तु । सं जास्पत्यꣳ सुयमम् आ कृणुष्व शत्रूयताम् अभि तिष्ठा महाꣳसि
Agni, lead the host to great prosperity; may your highest glories be ours. Establish harmonious kinship, make our discipline firm, and stand against our enemies with might.
त्वाꣳ हि मन्द्रतमम् अर्कशोकैर् ववृमहे महि नः श्रोष्य् अग्ने । इन्द्रं न त्वा शवसा देवता वायुं पृणन्ति राधसा नृतमाः
For you, who are most delightful, we have chosen with hymns of praise; be attentive to us, O Agni. Like Indra, you are filled with strength; the best of men honor you with gifts, as they do the gods and Vayu.
त्वे ऽ अग्ने स्वाहुत प्रियासः सन्तु सूरयः । यन्तारो ये मघवानो जनानामूर्वान् दयन्त गोनाम्
In you, O Agni, who are well-invoked, may our noble ones be dear; those generous leaders of men who grant wide pastures to cattle.
श्रुधि श्रुत्कर्ण वह्निभिर् देवैर् अग्ने सयावभिः । आ सीदन्तु बर्हिषि मित्रो ऽ अर्यमा प्रातर्यावाणो ऽ अध्वरम्
Hear, you who are famed for listening, O Agni, with the gods who bear fire, with your companions; let Mitra and Aryaman, who come at dawn, be seated on the sacred grass at the sacrifice.
विश्वेषाम् अदितिर् यज्ञियानां विश्वेषाम् अतिथिर् मानुषाणाम् । अग्निर् देवानाम् अव ऽ आवृणानः सुमृडीको भवतु जातवेदाः
Aditi is the most worthy among all who are to be worshipped; among all humans, Agni is the guest. May Jātavedas, the knower of all births, who protects the gods, be gracious to us.
महो ऽ अग्नेः समिधानस्य शर्मण्य् अनागा मित्रे वरुणे स्वस्तये । श्रेष्ठे स्याम सवितुः सवीमनि तद् देवानाम् अवो ऽ अद्या वृणीमहे
Under the protection of the great, blazing Agni, may we be blameless before Mitra and Varuna for well-being; may we be foremost in the favor of Savitar. Today we choose the protection of the gods.
आपश् चित् पिप्यु स्तर्यो न गावो नक्षन्न् ऋतं जरितारस् त ऽ इन्द्र । याहि वायुर् न नियुतो नो ऽ अच्छा त्वꣳ हि धीभिर् दयसे वि वाजान्
Even the waters, swelling like cows, do not violate the order, O Indra, nor do the singers; come to us as Vayu comes to his followers, for you, by your thoughts, distribute the prizes.
गाव ऽ उपावतावतं मही यज्ञस्य रप्सुदा । उभा कर्णा हिरण्यया
The cows, bringing abundance to the sacrifice, have come near; both their ears are golden.
यद् अद्य सूर ऽ उदिते नागा मित्रो ऽ अर्यमा । सुवाति सविता भगः
When today, at the rising of the sun, Mitra and Aryaman are awake, Savitar and Bhaga bestow prosperity.
आ सुते सिञ्चत श्रियꣳ रोदस्योर् अभिश्रियम् । रसा दधीत वृषभम् ॥[ तं प्रत्नथा। अयं वेनः॥]
At the pressing, pour forth wealth, the radiance of heaven and earth; let Rasā support the mighty bull. [That ancient one, this is Vena.]
आतिष्ठन्तं परि विश्वे ऽ अभूषञ् छ्रियो वसानश् चरति स्वरोचिः । महत् तद् वृष्णो ऽ असुरस्य नामा विश्वरूपो ऽ अमृतानि तस्थौ
When he stands forth, all adorn him, clothed in splendor, he moves shining; that is the great name of the mighty Asura, of many forms, he has established the immortal things.
प्र वो महे मन्दमानायान्धसो ऽर्चा विश्वानराय विश्वाभुवे । इन्द्रस्य यस्य सुमखꣳ सहो महि श्रवो नृम्णं च रोदसी सपर्यतः
To the great, to the joyous one, to Viśvānara, the all-pervading, we offer praise with the exhilarating drink; whose favor, strength, and fame, Indra and the two worlds honor.
बृहन्न् इद् इध्म ऽ एषां भूरि शस्तं पृथुः स्वरुः । येषाम् इन्द्रो युवा सखा
Truly, their fuel is abundant, their praise is great, their song is wide; for them, Indra is the youthful friend.
इन्द्रेहि मत्स्य् अन्धसो विश्वेभिः सोमपर्वभिः । महाꣳ२ऽ अभिष्टिर् ओजसा
Come, Indra, rejoice in the drink, with all those who partake of Soma; grant us great abundance with your strength.
इन्द्रो वृत्रम् अवृणोच्छर्धनीतिः प्र मायिनाम् अमिनाद् वर्पणीतिः । अहन् व्यꣳसम् उशधग् वनेष्व् आविर् धेना ऽ अकृणोद् राम्याणाम्
Indra struck down Vṛtra with his shattering force; he exposed the illusionists with his revealing power. He slew the serpent lying in the woods, and brought forth the cows, making the lovely ones manifest.
कुतस् त्वम् इन्द्र माहिनः सन्न् एको यासि सत्पते किं त ऽ इत्था । सं पृच्छसे समराणः शुभानैर् वोचेस् तन् नो हरिवो यत् ते ऽ अस्मे । महाꣳ२ऽ इन्द्रो य ऽ ओजसा । कदा चन स्तरीर् असि । कदा चन प्र युच्छसि
From where, O Indra, do you, being mighty, go forth alone, O Lord of Truth? What is it that you thus do? You question the noble ones in battle; speak to us, O wielder of the thunderbolt, what you have for us. Great is Indra by his strength. Never are you overcome. Never are you cast aside.
आ तत् त ऽ इन्द्रायवः पनन्ताभि य ऽ ऊर्वं गोमन्तं तितृत्सान् । सकृत्स्वं ये पुरुपुत्रां महीꣳ सहस्रधारां बृहतीं दुदुक्षन्
To that Indra the Ayavas press forward, longing to cross to the rich land of cattle. Those who, being sons of many, wish to milk the earth, the great, thousand-streamed, abundant one, all at once.
इमां ते धियं प्र भरे महो महीम् अस्य स्तोत्रे धिषणा यत् त ऽ आनजे । तम् उत्सवे च प्रसवे च सासहिम् इन्द्रं देवासः शवसामदन्न् अनु
This thought I offer to you, great and mighty one, for this praise, O wise one, which I have composed. In festival and in striving, the gods, with their strength, have followed Indra, the victorious.
विभ्राड् बृहत् पिबतु सोम्यं मध्व् आयुर् दधद् यज्ञपताव् अविह्रुतम् । वातजूतो यो ऽ अभिरक्षति त्मना प्रजाः पुपोष पुरुधा वि राजति
Let the shining one, bearing greatness, drink the sweet Soma, granting undisturbed life to the lords of sacrifice. He who, driven by the wind, protects with his own power, nourishes the peoples in many ways, and shines forth.
उद् उ त्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः । दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यꣳ स्वाहा
Upward, the rays carry that god, Jātavedas, the Sun, for all to see. Hail!
