वनस्पते वीड्वङ्गो हि भूया ऽ अस्मत्सखा प्रतरणः सुवीरः । गोभिः संनद्धो ऽ असि वीडयस्वास्थाता ते जयतु जेत्वानि
O tree, may you be strong-limbed, our friend, a good crossing, heroic; bound with ox-hide, be firm—may the one who stands upon you win victories.
दिवः पृथिव्याः पर्य् ओज ऽ उद्भृतं वनस्पतिभ्यः पर्य् आभृतꣳ सहः । अपाम् ओज्मानं परि गोभिर् आवृतम् इन्द्रस्य वज्रꣳ हविषा रथं यज
From heaven and earth is drawn forth strength, from the trees is gathered might; the thunderbolt of Indra, wrapped with ox-hide, offer the chariot as an oblation.
इन्द्रस्य वज्रो मरुताम् अनीकं मित्रस्य गर्भो वरुणस्य नाभिः । सेमां नो हव्यदातिं जुषाणो देव रथ प्रति हव्या गृभाय
Indra’s thunderbolt, the host of the Maruts, the seed of Mitra, the navel of Varuṇa—accepting this offering, O god, take hold of the chariot for our invocation.
उप श्वासय पृथिवीम् उत द्यां पुरुत्रा ते मनुतां विष्ठितं जगत् । स दुन्दुभे सजूर् इन्द्रेण देवैर् दूराद् दवीयो ऽ अप सेध शत्रून्
Make the earth and sky resound, let your fame be established everywhere; O drum, together with Indra and the gods, drive away the enemies far off.
आ क्रन्दय बलम् ओजो न ऽ आ धा नि ष्टनिहि दुरिता बाधमानः । अप प्रोथ दुन्दुभे दुच्छुना ऽ इत ऽ इन्द्रस्य मुष्टिर् असि वीडयस्व
Resound forth, O drum, with strength and vigor; drive away distress, repelling misfortune. Cast off evil, O drum, you are Indra's fist—resound mightily.
आमूर् अज प्रत्या वर्तयेमाः केतुमद् दुन्दुभिर् वावदीति । सम् अश्वपर्णाश् चरन्ति नो नरो ऽस्माकम् इन्द्र रथिनो जयन्तु
Sound forth, O drum, with a clear signal; let your voice return again and again. Let our charioteers, O Indra, victorious in battle, ride forth with horses for us.
आग्नेयः कृष्णग्रीवः सारस्वती मेषी बभ्रुः सौम्यः पौष्णः श्यामः शितिपृष्ठो बार्हस्पत्यः शिल्पो वैश्वदेव ऽ ऐन्द्रो ऽरुणो मारुतः कल्माष ऽ ऐन्द्राग्नः सꣳहितो ऽधोरामः सावित्रो वारुणः कृष्ण ऽ एकशितिपात् पेत्वः
The black-necked is Agni's, the speckled is Sarasvati's, the sheep is Meṣī's, the brown is Soma's, the dark one is Pūṣan's, the grey-backed is Bṛhaspati's, the spotted is Viśvadeva's, the red is Indra's, the dappled is Marut's, the mixed-colored is Indra-Agni's, the two with drooping lips are Sāvitr's and Varuṇa's, the black one is Ekasiti's, the piebald is Petva's.
अग्नये ऽनीकवते रोहिताञ्जिर् अनड्वान् अधोरामौ सावित्रौ पौष्णौ रजतनाभी वैश्वदेवौ पिशंगौ तूपरु मारुतः कल्माष ऽ आग्नेयः कृष्णो ऽजः सारस्वती मेषी वारुणः पेत्वः
To Agni, the red-hoofed bull; to Anīkavat, the red-footed ox; to the two with drooping lips, Sāvitr and Pūṣan; the silver-naved are Viśvadeva's; the two piebald are Tūparu's; the dappled is Marut's; the black is Agni's; the goat is Sarasvati's; the sheep is Meṣī's; the piebald is Varuṇa's.
अग्नये गायत्राय त्रिवृते राथन्तरायाष्टाकपाल ऽ इन्द्राय त्रैष्टुभाय पञ्चदशाय बर्हतायैकादशकपालो विश्वेभ्यो देवेभ्यो जागतेभ्यः सप्तदशेभ्यो वैरूपेभ्यो द्वादशकपालो मित्रावरुणाभ्याम् आनुष्टुभाभ्याम् एकविꣳशाभ्यां वैराजाभ्यां पयस्या बृहस्पतये पाङ्क्ताय त्रिणवाय शाक्वराय चरुः सवित्र ऽ औष्णिहाय त्रयस्त्रिꣳशाय रैवताय द्वादशकपालः प्राजापत्यश् चरुर् अदित्यै विष्णुपत्न्यै चरुर् अग्नये वैश्वानराय द्वादशकपालो ऽनुमत्या ऽ अष्टाकपालः
To Agni, the Gāyatrī with three verses; to Rāthantara, the eight-cup offering; to Indra, the Triṣṭubh with fifteen verses; to Barhata, the eleven-cup offering; to all the gods, the Jagatī with seventeen verses; to the Varūpa, the twelve-cup offering; to Mitra and Varuṇa, the Anuṣṭubh with twenty-one verses; to Vairāja, the nourishing; to Bṛhaspati, the Pankti with thirty-nine verses; to Śākvara, the Caru; to Savitar, the Uṣṇih with thirty-three verses; to Raivata, the twelve-cup offering; to Prajāpati, the Caru; to Aditi and Viṣṇu's spouse, the Caru; to Agni Vaiśvānara, the twelve-cup offering; to Anumati, the eight-cup offering.
देव सवितः प्र सुव यज्ञं प्र सुव यज्ञपतिं भगाय । दिव्यो गन्धर्वः केतुपूः केतं नः पुनातु वाचस्पतिर् वाजं नः स्वदतु
O divine Savitar, inspire the sacrifice, inspire the lord of sacrifice for good fortune. May the celestial Gandharva, the bearer of signs, purify our sign; may the lord of speech grant us strength.
तत् सवितुर् वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि । धियो यो नः प्रचोदयत्
We contemplate the divine radiance of Savitar, the most excellent; may he inspire our thoughts.
विश्वानि देव सवितर् दुरितानि परा सुव । यद् भद्रं तन् न ऽ आ सुव
O god Savitar, remove all our misfortunes; whatever is auspicious, bring that to us.
विभक्तारꣳ हवामहे वसोश् चित्रस्य राधसः । सवितारं नृचक्षसम्
We call upon the distributor of the splendid wealth of Vasu, Savitar, who sees all men.
ब्रह्मणे ब्राह्मणं क्षत्राय राजन्यं मरुद्भ्यो वैश्यं तपसे शूद्रं तमसे तस्करं नारकाय वीरहणं पाप्मने क्लीबम् आक्रयाया ऽ अयोगुं कामाय पुꣳश्चलूम् अतिक्रुष्टाय मागधम्
For Brahmanhood, the Brahmin; for sovereignty, the Kṣatriya; for the Maruts, the Vaiśya; for austerity, the Śūdra; for darkness, the thief; for hell, the slayer of heroes; for evil, the impotent; for sale, the iron-worker; for desire, the courtesan; for outcastes, the Māgadha.
नृत्ताय सूतं गीताय शैलूषं धर्माय सभाचरं नरिष्ठायै भीमलं नर्माय रेभꣳ हसाय कारिम् आनन्दाय स्त्रीषखं प्रमदे कुमारीपुत्रं मेधायै रथकारं धैर्याय तक्षाणम्
For dance, the bard; for song, the minstrel; for law, the courtier; for misfortune, the jester; for jest, the clown; for laughter, the comic; for joy, the companion of women; for delight, the son of a maiden; for intelligence, the chariot-maker; for steadfastness, the carpenter.
तपसे कौलालं मायायै कर्मारꣳ रूपाय मणिकारꣳ शुभे वपꣳ शरव्याया ऽ इषुकारꣳ हेत्यै धनुष्कारं कर्मणे ज्याकारं दिष्टाय रज्जुसर्जं मृत्यवे मृगयुम् अन्तकाय श्वनिनम्
For austerity, the potter; for magic, the smith; for beauty, the jeweler; for good fortune, the weaver; for archery, the arrow-maker; for weapons, the bow-maker; for work, the string-maker; for fate, the rope-twister; for death, the hunter; for destruction, the dog-leader.
नदीभ्यः पौञ्जिष्ठम् ऋक्षीकाभ्यो नैषादं पुरुषव्याघ्राय दुर्मदं गन्धर्वाप्सरोभ्यो व्रात्यं प्रयुग्भ्य ऽ उन्मत्तꣳ सर्पदेवजनेभ्यो ऽप्रतिपदमयेभ्यः कितवम् ईर्यताया ऽ अकितवं पिशाचेभ्यो बिदलकारीं यातुधानेभ्यः कण्टकीकारीम्
For the rivers, the fisherman; for the bear-hunters, the Nishada; for the tiger among men, the fierce one; for the Gandharvas and Apsarases, the outcaste; for the attendants, the madman; for the serpent-deities, the one without a fixed abode; for gamblers, the cheat; for non-gamblers, the ogre; for the fiends, the one who makes split bamboo; for the sorcerers, the thorn-maker.
संधये जारं गेहायोपपतिम् आर्त्यै परिवित्तं निर्ऋत्यै परिविविदानम् अराद्ध्या ऽ एदिधिषुःपतिं निष्कृत्यै पेशस्कारीꣳ संज्ञानाय स्मरकारीं प्रकामोद्यायोपसदं वर्णायानुरुधं बलायोपदाम्
For union, the adulterer; for the household, the paramour; for distress, the forsaken; for destruction, the betrayer; for misfortune, the husband of a barren woman; for expiation, the skilled worker; for knowledge, the memory-maker; for passionate pursuit, the lover; for color, the one who follows; for strength, the assistant.
उत्सादेभ्यः कुब्जं प्रमुदे वामनं द्वार्भ्यः स्रामꣳ स्वप्नायान्धम् अधर्माय बधिरं पवित्राय भिषजं प्रज्ञानाय नक्षत्रदर्शम् आशिक्षायै प्रश्निनम् उपशिक्षाया ऽ अभिप्रश्निनं मर्यादायै प्रश्नविवाकम्
For deformity, the hunchback; for joy, the dwarf; for the door, the lame; for sleep, the blind; for unrighteousness, the deaf; for purification, the physician; for wisdom, the star-gazer; for instruction, the questioner; for further instruction, the inquirer; for boundaries, the judge.
अर्मेभ्यो हस्तिपं जवायाश्वपं पुष्ट्यै गोपालं वीर्यायाविपालं तेजसे ऽजपालम् इरायै कीनाशं कीलालाय सुराकारं भद्राय गृहपꣳ श्रेयसे वित्तधम् आध्यक्ष्यायानुक्षत्तारम्
For the elephants, the elephant-keeper; for speed, the horse-keeper; for nourishment, the cowherd; for strength, the shepherd; for energy, the goat-herd; for food, the ploughman; for drink, the brewer; for good fortune, the householder; for prosperity, the treasurer; for supervision, the overseer.
भायै दार्वाहारं प्रभाया ऽ अग्न्येधं ब्रध्नस्य विष्टपायाभिषेक्तारं वर्षिष्ठाय नाकाय परिवेष्टारं देवलोकाय पेशितारं मनुष्यलोकाय प्रकरितारꣳ सर्वेभ्यो लोकेभ्यो ऽ उपसेक्तारम् अव ऽ ऋत्यै वधायोपमन्थितारं मेधाय वासःपल्पूलीं प्रकामाय रजयित्रीम्
For light, the wood-gatherer; for brilliance, the fire-kindler; for the slaughtered, the sacrificer; for abundance, the server; for the highest world, the attendant; for the world of the gods, the messenger; for the world of men, the announcer; for all worlds, the assistant; for return, the one who grinds; for intelligence, the cloth-bleacher; for desire, the dyer.
ऋतये स्तेनहृदयं वैरहत्याय पिशुनं विविक्त्यै क्षत्तारम् औपद्रष्ट्र्यायानुक्षत्तारं बालायानुचरं भूम्ने परिष्कन्दं प्रियाय प्रियवादिनम् अरिष्ट्या ऽ अश्वसादꣳ स्वर्गाय लोकाय भागदुघं वर्षिष्ठाय नाकाय परिवेष्टारम्
For truth, the thief at heart; for slaying enemies, the informer; for discrimination, the steward; for supervision, the overseer; for the child, the attendant; for abundance, the wanderer; for affection, the sweet-speaker; for safety, the horse-tamer; for the heavenly world, the milker; for the highest world, the attendant.
मन्यवे ऽयस्तापं क्रोधाय निसरं योगाय योक्तारꣳ शोकायाभिसर्तारं क्षेमाय विमोक्तारम् उत्कीलेभ्यस् त्रिष्ठिनं वपुषे मानस्कृतꣳ शीलायाञ्जनीकारीं निर्ऋत्यै कोशकारीं यमायासूम्
To Wrath, the one who burns; to Anger, the one who rushes forth; to Discipline, the one who binds; to Sorrow, the one who pursues; to Well-being, the one who releases; to the wedge, the three-pointed; to Splendor, the one shaped by the mind; to Conduct, the one who applies collyrium; to Destruction, the one who makes the sheath; to Restraint, the thread.
यमाय यमसूम् अथर्वभ्यो ऽवतोकाꣳ संवत्सराय पर्यायिणीं परिवत्सरायाविजाताम् इदावत्सरायातीत्वरीम् इद्वत्सरायातिष्कद्वरीं वत्सराय विजर्जराꣳ संवत्सराय पलिक्नीम् ऋभुभ्यो ऽजिनसंधꣳ साध्येभ्यश् चर्मम्नम्
To Restraint, the thread; to the Atharvans, the protected ones; to the Year, the revolving one; to the Half-year, the unborn; to the Present Year, the one who passes away; to the Past Year, the one who has departed; to the Year, the worn out; to the Year, the gray-haired; to the Ṛbhus, the one who joins skins; to the Sādhyas, the one who stretches hide.
सरोभ्यो धैवरम् उपस्थावराभ्यो दाशं वैशन्ताभ्यो बैन्दं नड्वलाभ्यः शौष्कलं पाराय मार्गारम् अवराय केवर्तं तीर्थेभ्य ऽ आन्दं विषमेभ्यो मैनालꣳ स्वनेभ्यः पर्णकं गुहाभ्यः किरातꣳ सानुभ्यो जम्भकं पर्वतेभ्यः किम्पूरुषम्
To the lakes, the fisherman; to the stagnant waters, the one who stays; to the marshes, the one who serves; to the reed beds, the one who cuts reeds; to the dry lands, the ferryman; to the crossing, the boatman; to the fords, the one who crosses; to the difficult places, the miner; to the resounding places, the leaf-blower; to the caves, the hunter; to the slopes, the crusher; to the mountains, the Kimpuruṣa.
बीभत्सायै पौल्कसं वर्णाय हिरण्यकारं तुलायै वाणिजं पश्चादोषाय ग्लाविनं विश्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्यः सिध्मलं भूत्यै जागरणम् अभूत्यै स्वपनम् आर्त्यै जनवादिनं व्यृद्ध्या ऽ अपगल्भꣳ सꣳशराय प्रच्छिदम्
To the repulsive, the Paulkasa; to color, the goldsmith; to the scales, the merchant; to the late evening, the glāvin; to all beings, the ashen one; to prosperity, wakefulness; to adversity, sleep; to distress, the slanderer; to growth, the boaster; to conflict, the divider.
अक्षराजाय कितवं कृतायादिनवदर्शं त्रेतायै कल्पिनं द्वापरायाधिकल्पिनम् आस्कन्दाय सभास्थाणुं मृत्यवे गोव्यच्छम् अन्तकाय गोघातं क्षुधे यो गां विकृन्तन्तं भिक्षमाण ऽ उपतिष्ठति दुष्कृताय चरकाचार्यं पाप्मने सैलगम्
To the king of dice, the gambler; to the winning throw, the newly-shown die; to the third throw, the one who arranges; to the fourth throw, the one who arranges further; to the one who leaps, the pillar in the assembly; to Death, the cow-killer; to the Ender, the cow-slayer; to Hunger, the one who, begging, stands by the one who cuts the cow; to Evil, the wandering teacher; to Sin, the mountain-dweller.
प्रतिश्रुत्काया ऽ अर्तनं घोषाय भषम् अन्ताय बहुवादिनम् अनन्ताय मूकꣳ शब्दायाडम्बराघातं महसे वीणावादं क्रोशाय तूणवध्मम् अवरस्पराय शङ्खध्मं वनाय वनपम् अन्यतोरण्याय दावपम्
To the echo, the shouter; to sound, the barker; to the end, the talkative one; to the endless, the mute; to noise, the drum-beater; to greatness, the lute-player; to the wailer, the flute-blower; to the lower sound, the conch-blower; to the forest, the forester; to the other wilderness, the fire-maker.
नर्माय पुꣳश्चलूꣳ हसाय कारिं यादसे शाबल्यां ग्रामण्यं गणकम् अभिक्रोशकं तान् महसे वीणावादं पाणिघ्नं तूणवध्मं तान् नृतायानन्दाय तलवम्
To jest, the courtesan; to laughter, the jester; to the Yādava, the speckled one; to the village, the accountant; to the crier, those; to greatness, the lute-player; to the hand-slayer, the flute-blower; to dance and joy, the cymbal-player.
अग्नये पीवानं पृथिव्यै पीठसर्पिणं वायवे चाण्डालम् अन्तरिक्षाय वꣳशनर्तिनं दिवे खलतिꣳ सूर्याय हर्यक्षं नक्षत्रेभ्यः किर्मिरं चन्द्रमसे किलासम् अह्ने शुक्लं पिङ्गाक्षꣳ रात्र्यै कृष्णं पिङ्गाक्षम्
To Agni, the fat one; to Earth, the one who spreads the seat; to Vāyu, the outcaste; to the atmosphere, the bamboo-dancer; to the sky, the digger; to Sūrya, the tawny horse; to the stars, the insect; to the Moon, the leprous; to day, the white, tawny-eyed one; to night, the black, tawny-eyed one.
