यन्नीक्षणं माꣳस्पचन्या उखाया या पात्राणि यूष्ण ऽ आसेचनानि । ऊष्मण्यापिधाना चरूणाम् अङ्काः सूनाः परि भूषन्त्य् अश्वम्
Whatever is the vessel for cooking meat, the pots, the ladles for pouring broth, the covers for the bowls, the marks on the dishes—all these surround the horse.
मा त्वाग्निर् ध्वनयीद् धूमगन्धिर् मोखा भ्राजन्त्य् अभि विक्त जघ्रिः । इष्टं वीतम् अभिगूर्तं वषट्कृतं तं देवासः प्रति गृभ्णन्त्यश्वम्
Let not the fire, smoky and fragrant, harm you; let not the shining embers burn your limbs; what is desired, praised, and offered with the vaṣaṭ-call, the gods accept—the horse.
निक्रमणं निषदनं विवर्तनं यच् च पड्वीशम् अर्वतः । यच् च पपौ यच् च घासिं जघास सर्वा ता ते ऽ अपि देवेष्व् अस्तु
Whatever is the horse’s stepping, sitting, turning, whatever is its stable, whatever it drank, whatever grass it ate—all these, let them also belong to the gods.
यद् अश्वाय वास ऽ उपस्तृणन्त्य् अधीवासं या हिरण्यान्य् अस्मै । संदानम् अर्वन्तं पड्वीशं प्रिया देवेष्व् आ यामयन्ति
Whatever clothing is spread for the horse, whatever gold is given to it, its harness, its stable, its beloved things—all these are sent to the gods.
यत् ते सादे महसा शूकृतस्य पार्ष्ण्या वा कशया वा तुतोद । स्रुचेव ता हविषो ऽ अध्वरेषु सर्वा ता ते ब्रह्मणा सूदयामि
Whatever pain has been caused to you by the whip, by the spur, or by the goad, just as the ladle touches the offerings in the sacrifices, all these I remove from you by the power of sacred speech.
चतुस्त्रिꣳशद् वाजिनो देवबन्धोर् वङ्क्रीर् अश्वस्य स्वधितिः सम् एति । अच्छिद्रा गात्रा वयुना कृणोत परुष्-परुर् अनुघुष्या वि शस्त
Thirty-four ribs, the divine bonds of the steed, the curved blade of the horse’s axe comes together; unbroken limbs, shaped by skill, rough and smooth, let them be praised with song.
एकस् त्वष्टुर् अश्वस्या विशस्ता द्वा यन्तारा भवतस् तथ ऽ ऋतुः । या ते गात्राणाम् ऋतुथा कृणोमि ता-ता पिण्डानां प्र जुहोम्य् अग्नौ
One is the slaughterer of Tvaṣṭṛ’s horse, two are its drivers, and thus is the season; whatever of your limbs I shape according to the season, those portions I offer into the fire.
मा त्वा तपत् प्रिय ऽ आत्मापियन्तं मा स्वधितिस् तन्व ऽआ तिष्ठिपत् ते । मा ते गृध्नुर् अविशस्तातिहाय छिद्रा गात्राण्य् असिना मिथू कः
Let not the beloved heat afflict you, let not the axe stand against your body; let not the greedy, seeking to surpass the unskilled, cut your broken limbs with the knife.
न वा ऽ उ ऽ एतन् म्रियसे न रिष्यसि देवाꣳ२ऽ इद् एषि पथिभिः सुगेभिः । हरी ते युञ्जा पृषती ऽ अभूताम् उपास्थाद् वाजी धुरि रासभस्य
You do not die, nor are you harmed; you go on the paths of the gods, easy to traverse. The bay mares are yoked for you, they become dappled, the steed stands at the yoke of the ass.
सुगव्यं नो वाजी स्वश्व्यं पुꣳसः पुत्राꣳ२ऽ उत विश्वापुषꣳ रयिम् । अनागास्त्वं नो ऽ अदितिः कृणोतु क्षत्रं नो ऽ अश्वो वनताꣳ हविष्मान्
May our steed bring us good cattle, good horses, sons, and all kinds of wealth; may Aditi grant us innocence, may our horse, bearing offerings, win us sovereignty.
इमा नु कं भुवना सीषधामेन्द्रश् च विश्वे च देवाः । आदित्यैर् इन्द्रः सगणो मरुद्भिर् अस्मभ्यं भेषजा करत् । यज्ञं च नस् तन्वं च प्रजां चादित्यैर् इन्द्रः सह सीषधाति
Now let us attain these worlds, and Indra and all the gods; Indra with the Ādityas and the Maruts grant us remedies; may Indra with the Ādityas together secure for us sacrifice, body, and offspring.
अग्ने त्वं नो ऽ अन्तम ऽ उत त्राता शिवो भव वरूथ्यः । वसुर् अग्निर् वसुश्रवा ऽ अच्छा नक्षि द्युमत्तमꣳ रयिं दाः । तं त्वा शोचिष्ठ दीदिवः सुम्नाय नूनम् ईमहे सखिभ्यः ॥ [स नो बोधि श्रुधी हवमुरुष्या णो ऽ अघायतः समस्मात्]
Agni, be our boundary and protector, be auspicious and a shield; Agni, giver of wealth and famed for generosity, grant us the brightest riches; you, most radiant, shining, we now invoke for favor among friends. [Awaken for us, hear our call, deliver us from harm.]
अग्निश् च पृथिवी च संनते ते मे सं नमताम् अदः । वायुश् चाऽन्तरिक्षं च संनते ते मे सं नमताम् अदः । ऽ आदित्यश् च द्यौश् च संनते ते मे सं नमताम् अदः । ऽ आपश् च वरुणश् च संनते ते मे सं नमताम् अदः । सप्त सꣳसदो ऽ अष्टमी भूतसाधनी । सकामाꣳ२ऽ अध्वनस् कुरु संज्ञानम् अस्तु मे ऽमुना
May Agni and Earth be united for me, let them be united here; may Vāyu and the atmosphere be united for me, let them be united here; may Āditya and the sky be united for me, let them be united here; may the waters and Varuṇa be united for me, let them be united here. Seven companions, the eighth is the foundation of beings; fulfill the desired path, let understanding be with me through this.
यथेमां वाचं कल्याणीम् आवदानि जनेभ्यः । ब्रह्मराजन्याभ्याꣳ शूद्राय चार्याय च स्वाय चारणाय । प्रियो देवानां दक्षिणायै दातुर् इह भूयासम् अयं मे कामः सम् ऋध्यताम् उप मादो नमतु
As I speak this auspicious speech among people—among Brahmins, nobles, Shudras, Aryas, my own, and wanderers—may I be dear to the gods, to the giver of the southern gift; may this wish of mine prosper, let joy bow down to me.
बृहस्पते ऽ अति यद् अर्यो ऽ अर्हाद् द्युमद् विभाति क्रतुमज् जनेषु । यद् दीदयच्छवस ऽ ऋतप्रजात तद् अस्मासु द्रविणं धेहि चित्रम् । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसि बृहस्पतये त्वा । एष ते योनिर् बृहस्पतये त्वा
O Bṛhaspati, when the noble shines beyond the worthy, radiant with wisdom among people, when he gives light and is born of truth, place that splendid wealth among us. You are received for Bṛhaspati; this is your seat, for Bṛhaspati.
इन्द्र गोमन्न् इहा याहि पिबा सोमꣳ शतक्रतो । विद्यद्भिर् ग्रावभिः सुतम् । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसीन्द्राय त्वा गोमते । ऽ एष ते योनिर् इन्द्राय त्वा गोमते
Indra, rich in cows, come here and drink the Soma, O hundred-powered; pressed with stones by those who know. You are received for Indra, rich in cows; this is your seat, for Indra, rich in cows.
इन्द्रा याहि वृत्रहन् पिबा सोमꣳ शतक्रतो । गोमद्भिर् ग्रावभिः सुतम् । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसीन्द्राय त्वा गोमते । ऽ एष ते योनिर् इन्द्राय त्वा गोमते
Indra, come, slayer of Vṛtra, drink the Soma, O hundred-powered; pressed with stones rich in cows. You are received for Indra, rich in cows; this is your seat, for Indra, rich in cows.
ऋतावानं वैश्वानरम् ऋतस्य ज्योतिषस् पतिम् । अजस्रं घर्मम् ईमहे । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसि वैश्वानराय त्वा । एष ते योनिर् वैश्वानराय त्वा
We invoke Vaiśvānara, lord of truth and light, the eternal warmth. You are received for Vaiśvānara; this is your seat, for Vaiśvānara.
वैश्वानरस्य सुमतौ स्याम राजा हि कं भुवनानाम् अभिश्रीः । इतो जातो विश्वम् इदं वि चष्टे वैश्वानरो यतते सूर्येण । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसि वैश्वानराय त्वा । एष ते योनिर् वैश्वानराय त्वा
May we be in the favor of Vaiśvānara, king, shining among the worlds; born here, he beholds all this, Vaiśvānara strives with the sun. You are received for Vaiśvānara; this is your seat, for Vaiśvānara.
वैश्वानरो न ऽ ऊतय ऽ आ प्र यातु परावतः । अग्निर् उक्थेन वाहसा । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसि वैश्वानराय त्वा । एष ते योनिर् वैश्वानराय त्वा
May the favors of Vaiśvānara come to us from afar; Agni with praise and strength. You are received for Vaiśvānara; this is your seat, for Vaiśvānara.
अग्निर् ऋषिः पवमानः पाञ्चजन्यः पुरोहितः । तम् ईमहे महागयम् । उपयामगृहीतो ऽस्य् अग्नये त्वा वर्चसे । ऽ एष ते योनिर् अग्नये त्वा वर्चसे
Agni, the seer, purified, of the five peoples, the priest; him we invoke, great and winning. You are received for Agni, for brilliance; this is your seat, for Agni, for brilliance.
महाꣳ२ऽ इन्द्रो वज्रहस्तः षोडशी शर्म यच्छतु । हन्तु पाप्मानं यो ऽस्मान् द्वेष्टि । उपयामगृहीतो ऽसि महेन्द्राय त्वा । एष ते योनिर् महेन्द्राय त्वा
May mighty Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, grant sixteenfold protection; may he destroy evil, whoever hates us. You are received for Mahendra; this is your seat, for Mahendra.
तं वो दस्मम् ऋतीषहं वसोर् मन्दानम् अन्धसः । अभि वत्सं न स्वसरेषु धेनव ऽ इन्द्रं गीर्भिर् नवामहे
We praise Indra with songs, the one who delights in the offering, who upholds truth, who is fond of the drink; like cows calling to their calf in their stalls, we call to him with our voices.
यद् वाहिष्ठं तद् अग्नये बृहद् अर्च विभावसो । महिषीव त्वद् रयिस् त्वद् वाजा ऽ उद् ईरते
Whatever is most excellent, sing that to Agni, the radiant one; wealth and strength arise from you, as from a mighty one.
एह्य् ऊ षु ब्रवाणि ते ऽग्न ऽ इत्थेतरा गिरः । एभिर् वर्धास ऽ इन्दुभिः
Come here, Agni, I will speak to you various words; may you grow with these libations.
ऋतवस् ते यज्ञं वि तन्वन्तु मासा रक्षन्तु ते हविः । संवत्सरस् ते यज्ञं दधातु नः प्रजां च परि पातु नः
May the seasons spread your sacrifice, may the months protect your offering; may the year hold your sacrifice, and may it guard our progeny.
उपह्वरे गिरीणाꣳ संगमे च नदीनाम् । धिया विप्रो ऽ अजायत
At the foot of the mountains, at the confluence of rivers, the sage was born through wisdom.
उच्चा ते जातम् अन्धसो दिवि सद् भूम्य् आ ददे । उग्रꣳ शर्म महि श्रवः
Your birth from the drink was placed high in heaven and on earth; grant us mighty protection and great fame.
स न ऽ इन्द्राय यज्यवे वरुणाय मरुद्भ्यः । वरिवोवित् परि स्रव
May this offering flow for Indra, worthy of worship, for Varuna, and for the Maruts, granting wide space.
एना विश्वान्य् अर्य ऽ आ द्युम्नानि मानुषाणाम् । सिषासन्तो वनामहे
With this, we seek to attain all noble powers among men, striving for them.
