मरुताꣳ स्कन्धा विश्वेषां देवानां प्रथमा कीकसा रुद्राणां द्वितीयादित्यानां तृतीया वायोः पुच्छम् अग्नीषोमयोर् भासदौ क्रुञ्चौ श्रोणिभ्याम् इन्द्राबृहस्पती ऽ ऊरुभ्यां मित्रावरुणाव् अल्गाभ्याम् आक्रमणꣳ स्थूराभ्यां बलं कुष्ठाभ्याम्
The shoulders belong to the Maruts, the first to all the gods, the armpits to the Rudras, the second to the Ādityas, the third to Vāyu; the tail to Agni and Soma, the thighs to the Kṛuñcas, the hips to Indra and Bṛhaspati, the knees to Mitra and Varuṇa, the shanks to the Ākramaṇas, the strength to the Sthūras, the skin to the Kuṣṭhas.
पूषणं वनिष्ठुनान्धाहीन्त् स्थूलगुदया सर्पान् गुदाभिर् विह्रुत ऽ आन्त्रैर् अपो वस्तिना वृषणम् आण्डाभ्यां वाजिनꣳ शेपेन प्रजाꣳ रेतसा चाषान् पित्तेन प्रदरान् पायुना कूश्माञ्छकपिण्डैः
Pūṣan with the anus, the blind with the large intestine, the serpents with the rectum, the wandering ones with the intestines, the Waters with the bladder, the virile with the testicles, the swift with the penis, offspring with the seed, the crows with the bile, the discharges with the anus, the owls with the excrement.
इन्द्रस्य क्रोडो ऽदित्यै पाजस्यं दिशां जत्रवो ऽदित्यै भसज् जीमूतान् हृदयौपशेनान्तरिक्षं पुरीतता नभ ऽ उदर्येण चक्रवाकौ मतस्नाभ्यां दिवं वृक्काभ्यां गिरीन् प्लाशिभिर् उपलान् प्लीह्ना वल्मीकान् क्लोमभिर् ग्लौभिर् गुल्मान् हिराभिः स्रवन्तीर् ह्रदान् कुक्षिभ्याꣳ समुद्रम् उदरेण वैश्वानरं भस्मना
Indra's lap, Aditi's strength, the regions' shoulders, Aditi's healing, the clouds' hearts, the midspace with the lungs, the sky with the stomach, the chakravāka birds with the kidneys, the mountains with the spleen, the stones with the pancreas, the anthills with the glands, the streams with the gall, the lakes with the liver, the ocean with the belly, Vaiśvānara with the ashes.
विधृतिं नाभ्या धृतꣳ रसेनापो यूष्णा मरीचीर् विप्रुड्भिर् नीहारमूष्मणा शीनं वसया प्रुष्वा ऽ अश्रुभिर् ह्रादुनीर् दूषीकाभिर् अस्ना रक्षाꣳसि चित्राण्य् अङ्गैर् नक्षत्राणि रूपेण पृथिवीं त्वचा जुम्बकाय स्वाहा
Support with the navel, firmness with the sap, the Waters with the warmth, the rays with the drops, the mist with the heat, the cold with the fat, the dew with the tears, the roaring ones with the humors, the tendons with the protections, the variegated with the limbs, the stars with the form, the earth with the skin; to Jumbaka, hail!
हिरण्यगर्भः सम् अवर्तताग्रे भूतस्य जातः पतिर् एक ऽ आसीत् । स दाधार पृथिवीं द्याम् उतेमां कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
In the beginning, the Golden Embryo arose; he was the one lord of all that is born. He established the earth and this sky—unto which god should we offer our oblation?
यः प्राणतो निमिषतो महित्वैक ऽ इद् राजा जगतो बभूव । य ऽ ईशे ऽ अस्य द्विपदश् चतुष्पदः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He who alone is the king of all that breathes and blinks, who rules over the world—unto which god should we offer our oblation?
यस्येमे हिमवन्तो महित्वा यस्य समुद्रꣳ रसया सहाहुः । यस्येमाः प्रदिशो यस्य बाहू कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He whose greatness the snowy mountains and the ocean with the river declare, whose are these directions, whose are the arms—unto which god should we offer our oblation?
य ऽ आत्मदा बलदा यस्य विश्व ऽ उपासते प्रशिषं यस्य देवाः । यस्य छायामृतं यस्य मृत्युः कस्मै देवाय हविषा विधेम
He who gives the soul, who gives strength, whom all the gods worship as their lord, whose shadow is immortality, whose shadow is death—unto which god should we offer our oblation?
आ नो भद्राः क्रतवो यन्तु विश्वतो दब्धासो ऽ अपरीतास ऽ उद्भिदः । देवा नो यथा सदम् इद् वृधे ऽ असन्न् अप्रायुवो रक्षितारो दिवे-दिवे
May auspicious thoughts come to us from every side, unimpeded, ever new and creative. May the gods always be our protectors, day by day, granting us increase and guarding us from harm.
देवानां भद्रा सुमतिर् ऋजूयतां देवानाꣳ रातिर् अभि नो नि वर्तताम् । देवानाꣳ सख्यम् उप सेदिमा वयं देवा न ऽ आयुः प्र तिरन्तु जीवसे
May the gracious favor of the gods be with us; may the generosity of the gods return to us. May we approach the friendship of the gods; may the gods grant us long life for living.
तान् पूर्वया निविदा हूमहे वयं भगं मित्रम् अदितिं दक्षम् अस्रिधम् । अर्यमणं वरुणꣳ सोमम् अश्विना सरस्वती नः सुभगा मयस् करत्
With the ancient invocation we call upon Bhaga, Mitra, Aditi, unwearied Dakṣa, Aryaman, Varuṇa, Soma, the Aśvins; may Sarasvatī, rich in blessings, bring us happiness.
तन् नो वातो मयोभु वातु भेषजं तन् माता पृथिवी तत् पिता द्यौः । तद् ग्रावाणः सोमसुतो मयोभुवस् तद् अश्विना शृणुतं धिष्ण्या युवम्
May Vāta, bringer of delight, bring us healing; may Mother Earth and Father Sky do the same. May the pressing stones, children of Soma, bring us joy; may you, Aśvins, mighty ones, listen to us.
तम् ईशानं जगतस् तस्थुषस् पतिं धियंजिन्वम् अवसे हूमहे वयम् । पूषा नो यथा वेदसाम् असद् वृधे रक्षिता पायुर् अदब्धः स्वस्तये
We call for help upon the Lord, ruler of the moving and the stationary, inspirer of thought. May Pūṣan, knowing the paths, make us prosper, guarding and protecting us unfailingly for our well-being.
स्वस्ति न ऽ इन्द्रो वृद्धश्रवाः स्वस्ति नः पूषा विश्ववेदाः । स्वस्ति नस् तार्क्ष्यो ऽ अरिष्टनेमिः स्वस्ति नो बृहस्पतिर् दधातु
May Indra of great fame bring us well-being; may Pūṣan, knower of all, bring us well-being; may Tārkṣya, with unbroken wheel, bring us well-being; may Bṛhaspati grant us well-being.
पृषदश्वा मरुतः पृश्निमातरः शुभंयावानो विदथेषु जग्मयः । अग्निजिह्वा मनवः सूरचक्षसो विश्वे नो देवा ऽ अवसा गमन्न् इह
The Maruts, with dappled horses, born of Pṛśni, shining in their assemblies; the Men with tongues of fire, with the Sun as their eye—may all the gods come here to our aid.
भद्रं कर्णेभिः शृणुयाम देवा भद्रं पश्येमाक्षभिर् यजत्राः । स्थिरैर् अङ्गैस् तुष्टुवाꣳसस् तनूभिर् व्यशेमहि देवहितं यद् आयुः
May we hear what is auspicious with our ears, O gods; may we see what is auspicious with our eyes, O worshipful ones. With firm limbs and bodies, may we sing your praise and live out the life allotted by the gods.
शतम् इन् नु शरदो ऽ अन्ति देवा यत्रा नश् चक्रा जरसं तनूनाम् । पुत्रासो यत्र पितरो भवन्ति मा नो मध्या रीरिषतायुर् गन्तोः
May the gods grant a hundred autumns of life, where the wheels of aging do not wear out our bodies; where sons become fathers—let not our lifespan be cut short midway.
अदितिर् द्यौर् अदितिर् अन्तरिक्षम् अदितिर् माता स पिता स पुत्रः । विश्वे देवा ऽ अदितिः पञ्च जना ऽ अदितिर् जातम् अदितिर् जनित्वम्
Aditi is the sky, Aditi is the atmosphere, Aditi is mother, father, and son; all the gods are Aditi, the five peoples are Aditi, what is born is Aditi, and creation itself is Aditi.
मा नो मित्रो वरुणो ऽ अर्यमायुर् इन्द्र ऽ ऋभुक्षा मरुतः परि ख्यन् । यद् वाजिनो देवजातस्य सप्तेः प्रवक्ष्यामो विदथे वीर्याणि
May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aryaman, Indra, the Ṛbhus, and the Maruts not diminish our life; as we recount the deeds of the swift-born gods, let us declare their heroic acts in the assembly.
यन् निर्णिजा रेक्णसा प्रावृतस्य रातिं गृभीतां मुखतो नयन्ति । सुप्राङ् अजो मेम्यद् विश्वरूप ऽ इन्द्रापूष्णोः प्रियम् अप्य् एति पाथः
When, with the guiding line, they lead forth the prize taken from the mouth of the covered one, the well-guided goat, bearing all forms, approaches the beloved path of Indra and Pūṣan.
एष छागः पुरो ऽ अश्वेन वाजिना पूष्णो भागो नीयते विश्वदेव्यः । अभिप्रियं यत् पुरोडाशम् अर्वता त्वष्टेद् एनꣳ सौश्रवसाय जिन्वति
This goat, led forth with the swift horse, is Pūṣan’s portion, carried for all the gods; as the beloved sacrificial cake is brought by the horse, Tvaṣṭṛ quickens it for Sauśravas.
यद्धविष्यम् ऋतुशो देवयानं त्रिर् मानुषाः पर्य् अश्वं नयन्ति । अत्रा पूष्णः प्रथमो भाग ऽ एति यज्ञं देवेभ्यः प्रतिवेदयन्न् अजः
When, at the proper time, the offering for the gods is thrice led around the horse by men, then Pūṣan’s first portion goes forth, and the goat announces the sacrifice to the gods.
होताध्वर्युर् आवया ऽ अग्निमिन्धो ग्रावग्राभ ऽ उत शꣳस्ता सुविप्रः । तेन यज्ञेन स्वरंकृतेन स्विष्टेन वक्षणा आ पृणध्वम्
The Hotṛ, Adhvaryu, the one who kindles Agni, the stone-holder, and the wise reciter—all, through this well-ordered, well-offered sacrifice, fill the containers with nourishment.
यूपव्रस्का ऽ उत ये यूपवाहाश् चषालं ये ऽ अश्वयूपाय तक्षति । ये चार्वते पचनꣳ सम्भरन्त्य् उतो तेषाम् अभिगूर्तिर् न ऽ इन्वतु
Those who prepare the yūpa posts, those who carry the yūpa, those who shape the horse’s yūpa, and those who gather the cooking for the horse—may their praise not go unanswered.
उप प्रागात् सुमन् मे धायि मन्म देवानाम् आशा ऽ उप वीतपृष्ठः । अन्व् एनं विप्रा ऽ ऋषयो मदन्ति देवानां पुष्टे चकृमा सुबन्धुम्
May my prayer proceed well, may the hope of the gods be fulfilled, may it reach the woven seat; the sages and seers rejoice in him, and we have made him a strong friend in the gods’ abundance.
यद् वाजिनो दाम संदानम् अर्वतो या शीर्षण्या रशना रज्जुर् अस्य । यद् वा घास्य प्रभृतम् आस्ये तृणꣳ सर्वा ता ते ऽ अपि देवेष्व् अस्तु
Whatever is the horse’s harness, its binding, the head-rope, the rein, or the grass placed in its mouth—all these, let them also belong to the gods.
यद् अश्वस्य क्रविषो मक्षिकाश यद् वा स्वरौ स्वधितौ रिप्तम् अस्ति । यद्धस्तयोः शमितुर् यन् नखेषु सर्वा ता ते ऽ अपि देवेष्व् अस्तु
Whatever of the horse’s flesh is touched by flies, whatever is scraped by the axe or knife, whatever is in the hands of the preparer, or in its hooves—all these, let them also belong to the gods.
यद् ऊवध्यम् उदरस्यापवाति य ऽ आमस्य क्रविषो गन्धो ऽ अस्ति । सुकृता तच्छमितारः कृण्वन्तूत मेधꣳ शृतपाकं पचन्तु
Whatever is removed from the horse’s belly as waste, whatever scent arises from its flesh, let the skilled preparers handle it, and let them cook the sacrificial meat well.
यत् ते गात्राद् अग्निना पच्यमानाद् अभि शूलं निहतस्यावधावति । मा तद् भूम्याम् आ श्रिषन् मा तृणेषु देवेभ्यस् तद् उशद्भ्यो रातम् अस्तु
Whatever pain remains in you from the fire’s cooking, whatever wound persists from being struck—let it not rest on the earth or on the grass; let it be given to the gods and the sacrificial flames.
ये वाजिनं परिपश्यन्ति पक्वं य ऽ ईम् आहुः सुरभिर् निर् हरेति । ये चार्वतो माꣳसभिक्षाम् उपासत ऽ उतो तेषाम् अभिगूर्तिर् न ऽ इन्वतु
Those who observe the cooked horse, those who say it is fragrant and carried away, those who seek meat from the horse—may their praise not go unanswered.
