पृच्छामि त्वा परम् अन्तं पृथिव्याः पृच्छामि यत्र भुवनस्य नाभिः । पृच्छामि त्वा वृष्णो ऽ अश्वस्य रेतः पृच्छामि वाचः परमं व्योम
I ask you about the farthest end of the earth; I ask you where the navel of the world is. I ask you about the seed of the mighty horse; I ask you about the highest realm of speech.
इयं वेदिः परो ऽ अन्तः पृथिव्या ऽ अयं यज्ञो यत्र भुवनस्य नाभिः । अयꣳ सोमो वृष्णो ऽ अश्वस्य रेतः ब्रह्मायं वाचः परमं व्योम
This altar is the farthest end of the earth; this sacrifice is where the navel of the world is. This Soma is the seed of the mighty horse; this Brahman is the highest realm of speech.
सुभूः स्वयम्भूः प्रथमो ऽन्तर् महत्य् अर्णवे । दधे ह गर्भम् ऋत्वियं यतो जातः प्रजापतिः
The well-born, self-existent, the first within the great ocean, placed the embryo of the rite, from which Prajāpati was born.
होता यक्षत् प्रजापतिꣳ सोमस्य महिम्नः । जुषतां पिबतु सोमꣳ होतर् यज
The priest invokes Prajāpati by the greatness of Soma. May he be pleased; let the priest offer and let him drink Soma.
प्रजापते न त्वद् एतान्य् अन्यो विश्वा रूपाणि परि ता बभूव । यत्कामास् ते जुहुमस् तन् नो ऽ अस्तु । वयꣳ स्याम पतयो रयीणाम्
O Prajāpati, none other than you has encompassed all these forms. May that desire of yours, for which we offer, be ours. May we be lords of riches.
अश्वस् तूपरो गोमृगस् ते प्राजापत्याः कृष्णग्रीव ऽ आग्नेयो रराटे पुरस्तात् सारस्वती मेष्य् अधस्ताद्धन्वोर् आश्विनाव् अधोरामौ बाह्वोः सौमपौष्णः श्यामो नाभ्याꣳ सौर्ययामौ श्वेतश् च कृष्णश् च पार्श्वयोस् त्वाष्ट्रौ लोमशसक्थौ सक्थ्योर् वायव्यः श्वेतः पुच्छ ऽ इन्द्राय स्वपस्याय वेहद् वैष्णवो वामनः
The horse is the upper part, the cow and the deer are yours, O offspring of Prajāpati. The black-necked one is Agni's, placed in front; the Sarasvatī sheep is below, under the sand; the Aśvins' are the lower thighs; the Saumya and Pauṣṇa are the arms; the dark one is at the navel, the Sūrya's are the sides; the white and black are the flanks, the Tvaṣṭṛ's; the hairy are the thighs, the Vāyu's; the white tail is for Indra, the beautiful one for Svapasya; the great Vaiṣṇava is the dwarf.
रोहितो धूम्ररोहितः कर्कन्धुरोहितस् ते सौम्या बभ्रुर् अरुणबभ्रुः शुकबभ्रुस् ते वारुणाः शितिरन्ध्रो ऽन्यतःशितिरन्ध्रः समन्तशितिरन्ध्रस् ते सावित्राः शितिबाहुर् अन्यतःशितिबाहुः समन्तशितिबाहुस् ते बार्हस्पत्याः पृषती क्षुद्रपृषती स्थूलपृषती ता मैत्रावरुण्यः
The red one, the smoky-red, the Karkandhu-red are yours, O gentle one; the brown, the ruddy-brown, the white-brown are Varuṇa's; the white-marked, the other white-marked, the all-around white-marked are Sāvitrī's; the white-armed, the other white-armed, the all-around white-armed are Bṛhaspati's; the spotted, the small-spotted, the large-spotted are Maitrāvaruṇa's.
शुद्धवालः सर्वशुद्धवालो मणिवालस् त ऽ आश्विनाः श्यॆतः श्येताक्षो ऽरुणस् ते रुद्राय पशुपतये कर्णा यामा ऽ अवलिप्ता रौद्रा नभोरूपाः पार्जन्याः
The pure-maned, the all-pure-maned, the jewel-maned are the Aśvins'; the white, the white-eyed, the red are Rudra's, the lord of cattle; the ears are Yama's; the smeared are Raudra's; those of the form of the sky are Parjanya's.
पृश्निस् तिरश्चीनपृश्निर् ऊर्ध्वपृश्निस् ते मारुताः फल्गूर् लोहितोर्णी पलक्षी ताः सारस्वत्यः प्लीहाकर्णः शुण्ठाकर्णो ऽद्ध्यालोहकर्णस् ते त्वाष्ट्राः कृष्णग्रीवः शितिकक्षो ऽञ्जिसक्थस् त ऽ ऐन्द्राग्नाः कृष्णाञ्जिर् अल्पाञ्जिर् महाञ्जिस् त ऽ उषस्याः
The speckled, the crosswise-speckled, the upward-speckled are the Maruts'; the reddish, the red-tailed, the spotted are Sarasvatī's; the spleen-eared, the trunk-eared, the upward-iron-eared are Tvaṣṭṛ's; the black-necked, the white-eyed, the marked-thighed are Indra-Agni's; the black-fingered, the small-fingered, the great-fingered are Uṣas's.
शिल्पा वैश्वदेव्यो रोहिण्यस् त्र्यवयो वाचे ऽविज्ञाता ऽ अदित्यै सरूपा धात्रे वत्सतर्यो देवानां पत्नीभ्यः
The artisans are Vaiśvadevyas, the red ones are Rohiṇī's, the three-year-olds are for Speech, the unknown ones are for Aditi, the similar-formed are for Dhātr, the calves are for the wives of the gods.
कृष्णग्रीवा ऽ आग्नेयाः शितिभ्रवो वसूनाꣳ रोहिता रुद्राणाꣳ श्वेता ऽ अवरोकिण ऽ आदित्यानां नभोरूपाः पार्जन्याः
The black-necked are Agni's, the white-spotted are the Vasus', the red ones are Rudra's, the white, the seeing ones are the Ādityas', those of the form of the sky are Parjanya's.
उन्नत ऽ ऋषभो वामनस् त ऽ ऐन्द्रवैष्णवा ऽ उन्नतः शितिबाहुः शितिपृष्ठस् त ऽ ऐन्द्राबार्हस्पत्याः शुकरूपा वाजिनाः कल्माषा ऽ आग्निमारुताः श्यामाः पौष्णाः
The elevated, the bull, the dwarf are Indra-Viṣṇu's; the elevated, the white-armed, the white-backed are Indra-Bṛhaspati's; the boar-formed are the swift ones; the dappled are Agni-Marut's; the dark ones are Pauṣṇa's.
एता ऽ ऐन्द्राग्ना द्विरूपा ऽ अग्नीषोमीया वामना ऽ अनड्वाह ऽ आग्नावैष्णवा वशा मैत्रावरुण्योऽन्यत एन्यो ऽ मैत्र्यः
These are: the Indra-Agni pair, the two-formed ones; the Agni-Soma pair, the dwarfish ones; the Anaḍvāha, the Agni-Viṣṇu pair, the submissive ones; the Maitrāvaruṇi, another; and the Maitri, another.
कृष्णग्रीवा ऽ आग्नेया बभ्रवः सौम्याः श्वेता वायव्या ऽ अविज्ञाता ऽ अदित्यै सरूपा धात्रे वत्सतर्यो देवानां पत्नीभ्यः
The black-necked are of Agni, the tawny are of Soma, the white are of Vāyu, the unmarked are of Aditi, those of similar form are of Dhātri, the calves are for the wives of the gods.
कृष्णा भौमा धूम्रा ऽ आन्तरिक्षा बृहन्तो दिव्याः शबला वैद्युताः सिध्मास् तारकाः
The black ones belong to the earth, the smoky to the atmosphere, the large ones to the sky, the mottled to lightning, the ashy to the stars.
धूम्रान् वसन्ताया लभते श्वेतान् ग्रीष्माय कृष्णान् वर्षाभ्यो ऽरुणाञ्छरदे पृषतो हेमन्ताय पिशङ्गाञ्छिशिराय
He obtains the smoky ones for spring, the white for summer, the black for the rains, the red-spotted for autumn, the tawny for winter, the reddish-brown for the cool season.
त्र्यवयो गायत्र्यै पञ्चावयस् त्रिष्टुभे दित्यवाहो जगत्यै त्रिवत्सा ऽ अनुष्टुभे तुर्यवाह ऽ उष्णिहे
Three-year-olds are for Gāyatrī, five-year-olds for Triṣṭubh, two-year-old draught animals for Jagatī, three-calved ones for Anuṣṭubh, four-year-old draught animals for Uṣṇih.
पष्ठवाहो विराज ऽ उक्षाणो बृहत्या ऽ ऋषभाः ककुभे ऽनड्वाहः पङ्क्त्यै धेनवो ऽतिच्छन्दसे
Six-year-old draught animals are for Virāj, oxen for Bṛhatī, bulls for Kakubh, Anaḍvāha for Paṅkti, cows for Aticchandas.
कृष्णग्रीवा ऽ आग्नेया बभ्रवः सौम्या ऽ उपध्वस्ताः सावित्रा वत्सतर्यः सारस्वत्यः श्यामाः पौष्णाः पृश्नयो मारुता बहुरूपा वैश्वदेवा वशा द्यावापृथिवीयाः
The black-necked are of Agni, the tawny of Soma, the upadhvastā are of Sāvitrī, the calves of Sarasvatī, the dark ones of Pūṣan, the speckled of the Maruts, the many-formed of the Viśvadevas, the submissive of Heaven and Earth.
उक्ताः संचरा ऽ एता ऽ ऐन्द्राग्नाः कृष्णाः वारुणाः पृश्नयो मारुताः कायास् तूपराः
These have been declared as the moving ones: the Indra-Agni pair, the black ones, the Varuṇa pair, the speckled ones, the Maruts, and the uppermost of the forms.
अग्नये ऽनीकवते प्रथमजान् आ लभते मरुद्भ्यः सांतपनेभ्यः सवात्यान् मरुद्भ्यो गृहमेधिभ्यो बष्किहान् मरुद्भ्यः क्रीडिभ्यः सꣳसृष्टान् मरुद्भ्यः स्वतवद्भ्योऽनुसृष्टान्
For Agni with many faces, he obtains the firstborn from the Maruts; for the Maruts who bring heat, the Savāti; for the Maruts of the householder, the Baṣkihā; for the Maruts who play, the mingled ones; for the Maruts who possess their own, the following ones.
उक्ताः संचरा ऽ एता ऽ ऐन्द्राग्नाः प्राशृङ्गा माहेन्द्रा बहुरूपा वैश्वकर्मणाः
These have been declared as the moving ones: the Indra-Agni pair, the horned ones, the Mahendra, the many-formed of Viśvakarman.
धूम्रा बभ्रुनीकाशाः पितॄणाꣳ सोमवतां बभ्रवो बभ्रुनीकाशाः पितॄणां बर्हिषदां कृष्णा बभ्रुनीकाशाः पितॄणाम् अग्निष्वात्तानां कृष्णाः पृषन्तस् त्रैयम्बकाः
The smoky, tawny-colored are of the Fathers who have Soma; the tawny, tawny-colored are of the Fathers who sit on the barhis; the black, tawny-colored are of the Fathers who have been consumed by fire; the black, speckled are of the Triambakas.
उक्ताः संचरा ऽ एता शुनासीरीयाः श्वेता वायव्याः श्वेताः सौर्याः
These have been declared as the moving ones: those of Śunāsīra, the white of Vāyu, the white of Sūrya.
वसन्ताय कपिञ्जलान् आ लभते ग्रीष्माय कलविङ्कान् वर्षाभ्यस् तित्तिरीञ्छरदे वर्तिका हेमन्ताय ककराञ्छिशिराय विककरान्
For spring he obtains francolins, for summer lapwings, for the rains partridges, for autumn quails, for winter crows, for the cool season jackdaws.
समुद्राय शिशुमारान् आलभते पर्जन्याय मण्डूकान् अद्भ्यो मत्स्यान् मित्राय कुलीपयान् वरुणाय नाक्रान्
For the ocean he obtains porpoises, for Parjanya frogs, for the waters fish, for Mitra the kulīpaya birds, for Varuṇa crocodiles.
सोमाय हꣳसान् आ लभते वायवे बलाका ऽ इन्द्राग्निभ्यां क्रुञ्चान् मित्राय मद्गून् वरुणाय चक्रवाकान्
For Soma he obtains swans, for Vāyu cranes, for Indra and Agni curlews, for Mitra grebes, for Varuṇa ruddy shelducks.
अग्नये कुटरून् आ लभते वनस्पतिभ्य ऽ उलूकान् अग्नीषोमाभ्यां चाषान् अश्विभ्यां मयूरान् मित्रावरुणाभ्यां कपोतान्
For Agni he obtains woodpeckers, for the forest trees owls, for Agni and Soma jays, for the Aśvins peacocks, for Mitra and Varuṇa pigeons.
सोमाय लबान् आ लभते त्वष्ट्रे कौलीकान् गोषादीर् देवानां पत्नीभ्यः कुलीका देवजामिभ्यो ऽग्नये गृहपतये पारुष्णान्
For Soma he obtains lapwings, for Tvaṣṭṛ the kaulīka birds, for the cowsheds the birds of the wives of the gods, for Agni, the lord of the house, the pāruṣṇa birds.
अह्ने पारावतान् आ लभते रात्र्यै सीचापूर् अहोरात्रयोः संधिभ्यो जतूर् मासेभ्यो दात्यौहान्त् संवत्सराय महतः सुपर्णान्
For the day he obtains doves, for the night the sīcāpū bird, for the junctions of day and night the jatū bird, for the months the dātyuha, for the year the great eagle.
