अर्धमासाः परूꣳषि ते मासा ऽ आ च्छ्यन्तु शम्यन्तः । अहोरात्राणि मरुतो विलिष्टꣳ सूदयन्तु ते
Let the half-months, the limbs, bind you; let the months cut you, binding; let the days and nights, the Maruts, crush and break you.
दैव्या ऽ अध्वर्यवस् त्वा छ्यन्तु वि च आसतु । गात्राणि पर्वशस् ते सिमाः कृण्वन्तु शम्यन्तीः
Let the divine priests cut you and command you; let your limbs, at the joints, make boundaries, let them bind.
द्यौस् ते पृथिव्यन्तरिक्षं वायुश् छिद्रं पृणातु ते । सूयस् ते नक्षत्रैः सह लोकं कृणोतु साधुया
Let heaven, earth, the atmosphere, and the wind fill your opening; let the sun, together with the stars, make your world auspicious.
शं ते परेभ्यो गात्रेभ्यः शम् अस्त्व् अवरेभ्यः । शम् अस्थभ्यो मज्जभ्यः शम् व् अस्तु तन्वै तव
Peace to your upper limbs, peace to the lower; peace to the bones and marrow, peace to your body.
कः स्विद् एकाकी चरति क ऽ उ स्विज् जायते पुनः । किꣳ स्विद्धिमस्य भेषजं किम् व् आवपनं महत्
Who, indeed, walks alone? Who, indeed, is born again? What, indeed, is the remedy for winter? What is the great covering?
सूर्य ऽ एकाकी चरति चन्द्रमा जायते पुनः । अग्निर् हिमस्य भेषजं भूमिर् आवपनं महत्
The sun walks alone; the moon is born again; fire is the remedy for winter; earth is the great covering.
किꣳ स्वित् सूर्यसमं ज्योतिः किꣳ समुद्रसमꣳ सरः । किꣳ स्वित् पृथिव्यै वर्षीयः कस्य मात्रा न विद्यते
What is equal to the sun's light? What is a lake equal to the ocean? What is greater than the earth? Whose measure is not known?
ब्रह्म सूर्यसमं ज्योतिर् द्यौः समुद्रसमꣳ सरः । इन्द्रः पृथिव्यै वर्षीयान् गोस् तु मात्रा न विद्यते
Brahman is equal to the sun's light; the sky is a lake equal to the ocean; Indra is greater than the earth; the cow's measure is not known.
पृच्छामि त्वा चितये देवसख यदि त्वम् अत्र मनसा जगन्थ । येषु विष्णुस् त्रिषु पदेष्व् एष्टस् तेषु विश्वं भुवनम् आ विवेशाꣳ३ऽ
I ask you for understanding, friend of the gods, if you have grasped this with your mind; in those three steps where Vishnu was worshipped, in those, the whole world entered.
अपि तेषु त्रिषु पदेष्व् अस्मि येषु विश्वं भुवनम् आविवेश । सद्यः पर्य् एमि पृथिवीम् उत द्याम् एकेनाङ्गेन दिवो ऽ अस्य पृष्ठम्
Indeed, I am in those three steps where the whole world entered; I swiftly traverse the earth and also the sky, with one part, the back of this heaven.
केष्व् अन्तः पुरुष ऽ आ विवेश कान्य् अन्तः पुरुषे ऽ अर्पितानि । एतद् ब्रह्मन्न् उपवल्हामसि त्वा किꣳ स्विन् नः प्रति वोचास्य् अत्र
In which did the person enter? Which are placed within the person? O Brahman, we question you about this; what will you tell us here?
पञ्चस्व् अन्तः पुरुष ऽ आ विवेश तान्य् अन्तः पुरुषे ऽ अर्पितानि । एतत् त्वात्र प्रतिमन्वानो ऽ अस्मि न मायया भवस्य् उत्तरो मत्
In five, the person entered; those are placed within the person; I am searching for you here, not by illusion are you superior in thought.
का स्विद् आसीत् पूर्वचित्तिः किꣳ स्विद् आसीद् बृहद् वयः । का स्विद् आसीत् पिलिप्पिला का स्विद् आसीत् पिशङ्गिला
What was the former intention? What was the great speed? What was the pilippilā? What was the piśaṅgilā?
द्यौर् आसीत् पूर्वचित्तिः अश्वऽ आसीद् बृहद् वयः । अविर् आसीत् पिलिप्पिला रात्रिर् आसीत् पिशङ्गिला
Heaven was the former intention; the horse was the great speed; the goat was the pilippilā; night was the piśaṅgilā.
का ऽ ईमरे पिशंगिला का ऽ ईं कुरुपिशंगिला । क ऽ ईम् आस्कन्दम् अर्षति क ऽ ईं पन्थां वि सर्पति
Who is this Piśaṃgilā? Who is this Kurupiśaṃgilā? Who leaps upon the branch? Who glides along the path?
अजारे पिशंगिला श्वावित् कुरुपिशंगिला । शश आस्कन्दम् अर्षत्य् अहिः पन्थां वि सर्पति
The she-goat is Piśaṃgilā, the dog is Kurupiśaṃgilā. The hare leaps upon the branch, the serpent glides along the path.
कत्य् अस्य विष्ठाः कत्य् अक्षराणि कति होमासः कतिधा समिद्धः । यज्ञस्य त्वा विदथा पृच्छम् अत्र कति होतार ऽ ऋतुशो यजन्ति
How many are its droppings? How many syllables? How many offerings? In how many ways is it kindled? I ask you, in the assembly of sacrifice, how many priests worship in due season?
षड् अस्य विष्ठाः शतम् अक्षराण्य् अशीतिर् होमाः समिधो ह तिस्रः । यज्ञस्य ते विदथा प्र ब्रवीमि सप्त होतार ऋतुशो यजन्ति
Six are its droppings, a hundred syllables, eighty offerings, and three kindling-sticks. In the assembly of sacrifice, I declare to you: seven priests worship in due season.
को ऽ अस्य वेद भुवनस्य नाभिं को द्यावापृथिवी ऽ अन्तरिक्षम् । कः सूर्यस्य वेद बृहतो जनित्रं को वेद चन्द्रमसं यतोजाः
Who knows the navel of the world? Who knows the sky, the earth, and the atmosphere? Who knows the great origin of the sun? Who knows from where the moon was born?
वेदाहम् अस्य भुवनस्य नाभिं वेद द्यावापृथिवी ऽ अन्तरिक्षम् । वेद सूर्यस्य बृहतो जनित्रं अथो वेद चन्द्रमसं यतोजाः
I know the navel of the world. I know the sky, the earth, and the atmosphere. I know the great origin of the sun, and I also know from where the moon was born.
पृच्छामि त्वा परम् अन्तं पृथिव्याः पृच्छामि यत्र भुवनस्य नाभिः । पृच्छामि त्वा वृष्णो ऽ अश्वस्य रेतः पृच्छामि वाचः परमं व्योम
I ask you about the farthest end of the earth; I ask you where the navel of the world is. I ask you about the seed of the mighty horse; I ask you about the highest realm of speech.
इयं वेदिः परो ऽ अन्तः पृथिव्या ऽ अयं यज्ञो यत्र भुवनस्य नाभिः । अयꣳ सोमो वृष्णो ऽ अश्वस्य रेतः ब्रह्मायं वाचः परमं व्योम
This altar is the farthest end of the earth; this sacrifice is where the navel of the world is. This Soma is the seed of the mighty horse; this Brahman is the highest realm of speech.
सुभूः स्वयम्भूः प्रथमो ऽन्तर् महत्य् अर्णवे । दधे ह गर्भम् ऋत्वियं यतो जातः प्रजापतिः
The well-born, self-existent, the first within the great ocean, placed the embryo of the rite, from which Prajāpati was born.
होता यक्षत् प्रजापतिꣳ सोमस्य महिम्नः । जुषतां पिबतु सोमꣳ होतर् यज
The priest invokes Prajāpati by the greatness of Soma. May he be pleased; let the priest offer and let him drink Soma.
प्रजापते न त्वद् एतान्य् अन्यो विश्वा रूपाणि परि ता बभूव । यत्कामास् ते जुहुमस् तन् नो ऽ अस्तु । वयꣳ स्याम पतयो रयीणाम्
O Prajāpati, none other than you has encompassed all these forms. May that desire of yours, for which we offer, be ours. May we be lords of riches.
अश्वस् तूपरो गोमृगस् ते प्राजापत्याः कृष्णग्रीव ऽ आग्नेयो रराटे पुरस्तात् सारस्वती मेष्य् अधस्ताद्धन्वोर् आश्विनाव् अधोरामौ बाह्वोः सौमपौष्णः श्यामो नाभ्याꣳ सौर्ययामौ श्वेतश् च कृष्णश् च पार्श्वयोस् त्वाष्ट्रौ लोमशसक्थौ सक्थ्योर् वायव्यः श्वेतः पुच्छ ऽ इन्द्राय स्वपस्याय वेहद् वैष्णवो वामनः
The horse is the upper part, the cow and the deer are yours, O offspring of Prajāpati. The black-necked one is Agni's, placed in front; the Sarasvatī sheep is below, under the sand; the Aśvins' are the lower thighs; the Saumya and Pauṣṇa are the arms; the dark one is at the navel, the Sūrya's are the sides; the white and black are the flanks, the Tvaṣṭṛ's; the hairy are the thighs, the Vāyu's; the white tail is for Indra, the beautiful one for Svapasya; the great Vaiṣṇava is the dwarf.
रोहितो धूम्ररोहितः कर्कन्धुरोहितस् ते सौम्या बभ्रुर् अरुणबभ्रुः शुकबभ्रुस् ते वारुणाः शितिरन्ध्रो ऽन्यतःशितिरन्ध्रः समन्तशितिरन्ध्रस् ते सावित्राः शितिबाहुर् अन्यतःशितिबाहुः समन्तशितिबाहुस् ते बार्हस्पत्याः पृषती क्षुद्रपृषती स्थूलपृषती ता मैत्रावरुण्यः
The red one, the smoky-red, the Karkandhu-red are yours, O gentle one; the brown, the ruddy-brown, the white-brown are Varuṇa's; the white-marked, the other white-marked, the all-around white-marked are Sāvitrī's; the white-armed, the other white-armed, the all-around white-armed are Bṛhaspati's; the spotted, the small-spotted, the large-spotted are Maitrāvaruṇa's.
शुद्धवालः सर्वशुद्धवालो मणिवालस् त ऽ आश्विनाः श्यॆतः श्येताक्षो ऽरुणस् ते रुद्राय पशुपतये कर्णा यामा ऽ अवलिप्ता रौद्रा नभोरूपाः पार्जन्याः
The pure-maned, the all-pure-maned, the jewel-maned are the Aśvins'; the white, the white-eyed, the red are Rudra's, the lord of cattle; the ears are Yama's; the smeared are Raudra's; those of the form of the sky are Parjanya's.
पृश्निस् तिरश्चीनपृश्निर् ऊर्ध्वपृश्निस् ते मारुताः फल्गूर् लोहितोर्णी पलक्षी ताः सारस्वत्यः प्लीहाकर्णः शुण्ठाकर्णो ऽद्ध्यालोहकर्णस् ते त्वाष्ट्राः कृष्णग्रीवः शितिकक्षो ऽञ्जिसक्थस् त ऽ ऐन्द्राग्नाः कृष्णाञ्जिर् अल्पाञ्जिर् महाञ्जिस् त ऽ उषस्याः
The speckled, the crosswise-speckled, the upward-speckled are the Maruts'; the reddish, the red-tailed, the spotted are Sarasvatī's; the spleen-eared, the trunk-eared, the upward-iron-eared are Tvaṣṭṛ's; the black-necked, the white-eyed, the marked-thighed are Indra-Agni's; the black-fingered, the small-fingered, the great-fingered are Uṣas's.
शिल्पा वैश्वदेव्यो रोहिण्यस् त्र्यवयो वाचे ऽविज्ञाता ऽ अदित्यै सरूपा धात्रे वत्सतर्यो देवानां पत्नीभ्यः
The artisans are Vaiśvadevyas, the red ones are Rohiṇī's, the three-year-olds are for Speech, the unknown ones are for Aditi, the similar-formed are for Dhātr, the calves are for the wives of the gods.
