O Agni, the divine fire, is invoked to drink deeply of the nourishing breast, rich and full at the very center of being. He is invited to accept the honeyed, flowing spring, the oceanic seat of sustenance, and to enter in, partaking of this sacred nourishment. Ghee, the clarified butter, is celebrated as both origin and abode—born from itself, established in itself, and dwelling within itself. It is brought forth in due order, and with joy, the mighty Agni is called upon to carry the offering, sanctified with the mantra Svāhā. From the vast ocean arises a wave brimming with sweetness, subtle in its movement and bearing the gift of immortality. The secret name of ghee is revered, for it is said that the tongue is the navel of the gods, the very center of immortality itself. The name of ghee is declared with reverence in the sacrifice, upheld with devotion. The inspired priest listens to the praise, beholding the four-horned bull that has descended—an embodiment of the sacred. This bull is wondrous: it has four horns, three feet, two heads, and seven hands. Bound in threefold ways, it bellows powerfully; thus, the great god has entered into mortals, manifesting his presence. The gods discovered the ghee, hidden within the cow and divided into three parts, concealed by hands. Indra generated one portion, the Sun another, and Vena pressed out a third by his own power. From the heart and from the ocean, streams of ghee flow a hundredfold, unobstructed by any foe. These streams are beheld, and among them stands a golden reed at the center. They flow together as rivers do, as cows move in unison, purified within heart and mind. These waves of ghee surge forth eagerly, like fleet deer drawn to the swift arrow. Like the roaring of rivers on their course, swift as the wind, the mighty streams of ghee fly. They break through all obstacles like a red horse, swelling with abundant waves. These streams flow forth together, adorned and beautiful as women, smiling toward Agni. As offerings, they nourish the kindled fire, and Jātavedas, the all-knowing flame, delights in accepting them. They are beheld as maidens ready for marriage, anointed and adorned. Wherever Soma is pressed and the sacrifice is performed, there the streams of ghee flow forth in abundance. May these streams flow with excellent praise, victorious in every contest, granting auspicious wealth. O deities, lead this sacrifice for us and let the streams of ghee, full of sweetness, pour forth. Upon your abode rests the entire world: within the ocean, in the heart, in the very breath of life. In the assembly of waters, where the offering is made, may we partake of that wave filled with sweetness. Now, with the spirit of offering, the devotee prays for blessings to be accomplished through sacrifice: May vigor, impulse, aspiration, progress, thought, resolve, sound, praise, fame, hearing, light, and well-being be mine. May breath, the downward and diffused breaths, life, mind, understanding, speech, sight, hearing, skill, and strength all be mine through the power of sacrifice. May energy, endurance, self, body, protection, armor, limbs, bones, coverings, and the fullness of life and old age be mine, accomplished through sacrifice. May supremacy, lordship, passion, force, abundance, water, greatness, breadth, expansion, rain, length, growth, and increase be mine, all achieved through sacrifice. May truth, faith, the moving world, wealth, the universe, greatness, play, delight, all that is born and yet to be born, good speech, and good deeds be mine, through sacrifice. May order, immortality, freedom from disease and illness, long life, many years, freedom from enemies, fearlessness, happiness, good sleep, good awakening, and good days be mine—may all these be fulfilled through sacrifice. May I have a guide, a supporter, security, steadfastness, the universe, greatness, consciousness, knowledge, good offspring, good progeny, fruitful ploughing, and rest—all through sacrifice. May I have peace, delight, affection, favor, desire, happiness, fortune, wealth, welfare, prosperity, greater excellence, and fame—may all these be granted through sacrifice. May I have vigor, sweet speech, nourishment, essence, clarified butter, honey, good food and drink, abundant agriculture, rain, victory, and a wealth of plants—all through sacrifice. May I have wealth, riches, nourishment, thriving, expansion, mastery, fullness, greater fullness, good harvest, inexhaustible stores, food, and freedom from hunger—may all these be mine through sacrifice. May I have possessions, knowledge of what is and what is to be, easy passage, a good path, prosperity, increase, what is prepared, understanding, and wisdom—may all these be mine through sacrifice. May I have rice, barley, beans, sesame, green gram, millet, priyaṅgu, panic seed, black millet, wild rice, wheat, and lentils—all through sacrifice. May I have stone, clay, hills, mountains, sand, forest trees, gold, copper, iron, lead, and tin—may all these be mine through sacrifice. May I have fire, water, herbs, medicinal plants, cultivated and wild crops, domestic and wild animals, wealth, prosperity, being, and becoming—may all these be accomplished through sacrifice. May I have goods, dwelling, action, power, purpose, wish, and attainment—may all these be mine through sacrifice. May I have Agni and Indra; Soma and Indra; Savitṛ and Indra; Sarasvatī and Indra; Pūṣan and Indra; Bṛhaspati and Indra—may all these divine pairings be mine through sacrifice. May I have Mitra and Indra; Varuṇa and Indra; Dhātṛ and Indra; Tvaṣṭṛ and Indra; the Maruts and Indra; all the gods and Indra—may all these be mine through sacrifice. May I have Earth and Indra; the atmosphere and Indra; the sky and Indra; the seasons and Indra; the stars and Indra; the directions and Indra—may all these be mine through sacrifice. May I have the Soma stalk, the ray, the undeceivable, the lord, the low-voiced, the inner controller, the Indra-Vāyu oblation, the Maitrāvaruṇa, the Aśvins, the Pratiprasthāna, the Śukra, and the Manthī—may all these be accomplished through sacrifice. May I have the Āgrayaṇa, the Vaiśvadeva, the Dhruva, the Vaiśvānara, the Indrāgni, the Mahāvaiśvadeva, the Marutvatīya, the Niṣkevalya, the Sāvitra, the Sārasvata, the Patnīvata, and the Hāriyojana—may all these be accomplished through sacrifice. May I have the sacrificial ladles, cups, Vāyavya vessels, Droṇakalaśa, pressing stones, Adhiṣavaṇa, strainer, Ādhavanīya, altar, sacred grass, Avabhṛtha, and Svagākāra—may all these be accomplished through sacrifice. May I have Agni, the Gharma, the Ark, the Sun, the breath, the Aśvamedha, the Earth, Aditi, Diti, the sky, the fingers, the Śakvarī verses, and the directions—may all these be accomplished through sacrifice. May I have observance, the seasons, austerity, the year, day and night, the Urvaṣṭhī and Bṛhadrathantara chants—may all these be accomplished through sacrifice. May I have the sacred numbers—one, three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, fifteen, seventeen, nineteen, twenty-one, twenty-three, twenty-five, twenty-seven, twenty-nine, thirty-one, and thirty-three—each doubled, all accomplished through sacrifice. May I have four, eight, twelve, sixteen, twenty, twenty-four, twenty-eight, thirty-two, thirty-six, forty, forty-four, and forty-eight—each doubled, all through sacrifice. May the three-year-old male and female, the two-year-old male and female, the five-year-old male and female, the three-calved male and female, and the four-year-old male and female be prepared for me by sacrifice. May the six-year-old male and female, the bull, the cow, the ox, the draught animal, and the milch cow be prepared for me by sacrifice. Thus, through the sacred offering and with hearts full of reverence, all these blessings—spiritual, material, and cosmic—are invoked and accomplished through sacrifice, the eternal bridge between the divine and the mortal.
