May the Supreme Lord, source of all radiance, place you upon the luminous expanse of the sky, so that you may become the very breath of all beings—guiding inhalation, exhalation, circulation, ascent, establishment, and movement. The Sun himself is your sovereign; by that divine might, O Angiras, may you be firmly established. Fill this entire world, fill every opening, and remain steadfast. Indra, Agni, and Brihaspati have blessed you in this sacred womb. The children of Prishni press the Soma for him, and the birth of the gods shines forth brilliantly across the three realms of heaven. All voices rise in praise of Indra, whose domain is the vast ocean—he is the foremost among charioteers, the true lord of prizes, the supreme master. When the horse is released, it grazes freely on the grass as the great barrier is lifted; then the wind follows its destined course, the flame spreads, and your path becomes veiled in darkness. I seat you within the dwelling, in the shade, and in the heart of the ocean; radiant and shining, rise up to the heavens and illumine the earth and the vast atmosphere. Once more, may the Supreme Lord place you upon the radiant sky—spread out, uphold and strengthen the heavens, and do not harm them. For the breath of all—life’s every movement and cycle—may the Sun protect you with welfare, with a shield, and with peace. By that divine power, O Angiras, be firmly established. You are the measure of a thousand, the likeness of a thousand, the very expansion of a thousand; you are mighty, and I dedicate you to the thousandfold. Now, salutations to you, O Rudra, fierce and wrathful one, and to your arrow—salutations also to your mighty arms. O Rudra, reveal to us your most auspicious and tranquil form, free from terror and evil; with that gracious body, O mountain-dweller, show yourself to us. The arrow you hold in your hand, O Lord of Mountains, make it auspicious—do not harm people or the world. With gentle words, we address you, O mountain-dweller, so that all the world may be free from sickness and may show us goodwill. The divine healer spoke first, the supreme advocate, who subdues all serpents and drives away all evil spirits downward. We invoke the favor of that one who is copper-red, ruddy, and tawny—most auspicious—and those Rudras who surround him in all directions by the thousands. That blue-necked, red-hued one who descends, whom the herdsman and the water-bearer have seen—when he is seen, may he show us mercy. Salutations to the blue-necked, thousand-eyed, gracious one, and to all his beings. Release the bowstring from both ends of your bow; cast away those arrows in your hand, O Lord. Let the bow of the matted-haired one be unstrung; let his arrows be rendered harmless, let his quiver remain closed. That most generous missile in your hand, your bow—may it shield us from all sides, keeping us safe from harm. May the missile from your bow protect us on every side; and now, lay your quiver aside in this very place. Lower your bow, O thousand-eyed one with a hundred quivers; break the points of your arrows, and be gracious and kind toward us. Salutations to your weapon, to the one who wields it, to the mighty; salutations to both your arms and your bow. Harm neither the great nor the small, neither the young nor the grown; do not strike our father nor our mother, do not injure our beloved bodies, O Rudra. Do not harm our children or descendants, do not diminish our lifespan, do not hurt our cattle or horses; do not strike our heroic, radiant men—those who offer oblations—we ever invoke you. Salutations to the golden-armed, to the commander, to the lord of directions; to the trees, the green-haired, to the lord of cattle; to the tawny, radiant one, to the lord of paths; to the green-haired, adorned, to the lord of nourishment. Salutations to the roaring one, to the hunter, to the lord of food; to the weapon of Bhava, to the lord of beings; to Rudra the archer, to the lord of fields; to the charioteer, the destroyer, to the lord of forests. Salutations to the red one, the builder, to the lord of trees; to the earth-dweller, the water-maker, to the lord of herbs; to the counselor, the merchant, to the lord of enclosures; to the loud-voiced, the wailer, to the lord of foot-soldiers. Salutations to the all-pervading runner, to the lord of beings; to the enduring, the piercer, to the lord of piercers; to the quiver-bearer, the watchful, to the lord of thieves; to the low-voiced, the wanderer, to the lord of wilderness. Salutations to the deceiver, the circumventer, to the lord of robbers; to the quiver-bearer, the arrow-holder, to the lord of thieves; to the cutters, the slayers, to the lord of those who steal; to the sword-bearers, the night-wanderers, to the lord of those who cut. Salutations to the turbaned, the mountain-dweller, to the lord of wanderers; to the arrow-bearers, the bowmen; to the stringers, the replacers; to the drawers, the shooters. Salutations to the releasers, the shooters; to the sleepers, the wakeful; to the lying down, the sitting; to the standing, the running. Salutations to the assemblies, to the leaders of assemblies; to the horses, to the lords of horses; to the female piercers, the female shooters; to the troops, the mighty ones. Salutations to the groups, to the lords of groups; to the hosts, to the lords of hosts; to the clever, to the lords of clever ones; to the deformed, to the all-formed. Salutations to the armies, to the commanders; to the charioteers, to the non-charioteers; to the drivers, the gatherers; to the great, to the small. Salutations to the carpenters, to the chariot-makers; to the potters, the artisans; to the Nishadas, the heap-makers; to the dogs, the hunters. Salutations to the dogs, to the lords of dogs; to Bhava and to Rudra; to Sharva and to the lord of cattle; to the blue-necked and to the fair-throated. Salutations to the one with matted hair and to the shaven-headed; to the thousand-eyed and to the bearer of a hundred bows; to the lord of the mountains and to the one who pervades; to the most generous and to the swift-moving. Salutations to the short and to the dwarf; to the great and to the greater; to the aged and to the one who increases; to the foremost and to the first. Salutations to the swift and to the fleet; to the rapid and to the quick; to the wave and to the flowing; to the roaring and to the island-dweller. Salutations to the eldest and to the youngest; to the one born before and to the one born after; to the one in the middle and to the one not fully grown; to the lowest and to the one at the base. Thus, with reverence and devotion, the many forms and powers of the Supreme are invoked and honored, seeking his protection, his peace, and his blessing for all beings and all the worlds.
