May all your nourishing streams, your powers, your victorious energies, and your vital strengths unite, O Soma. Let them be filled for the sake of immortality, and may you, Soma, place the highest glories in the heavens. O Soma, most exhilarating, fill yourself with all your flowing streams—be our most renowned and generous friend, bringing us increase and abundance. With longing, my mind turns to you, O Agni, just as a calf seeks its distant resting place. I yearn for you in my song. To you, O most Angiras, all auspicious dwellings, each in their own way, have turned, seeking you with desire, O Agni. In beloved abodes, you, Agni, are the desire of what has been and what will be; you alone shine forth as the sovereign. Therefore, I take Agni first for myself: for the increase of wealth, for worthy offspring, for heroism. May the deities attend to me. You are the back of the waters, the very womb of Agni, swelling around the ocean. Growing great, come forth in the lotus, spreading out by the vastness and measure of the sky. In the beginning, Brahma was born first, radiant and shining with splendor before all boundaries. He, the Vena, moved, his roots stretching deep—reaching highest and lowest, the very womb of existence and non-existence. Then Hiraṇyagarbha arose at the dawn of all things, the sole lord of all that exists, sustaining earth and heaven. To which god, then, shall we offer our sacrifice? A divine drop descended upon earth and heaven, upon this womb and the one before. I offer this drop moving through the common womb, together with the seven priests. And to all serpents—wherever they may be, upon the earth, in the atmosphere, or in the sky—I offer salutations. To the arrows of the demons, those among the trees, those hidden in hollows—salutations to those serpents as well. Salutations to those in the shining realm of the sky, to those in the rays of the sun, to those whose seat is in the waters—salutations to those serpents. Let a path be made, a course as broad as the earth; go forth like a king with a mighty elephant. Following this course, moving swiftly, stand firm and strike down the demons with the fiercest weapons. O Agni, your sparks fly swiftly. Touch with boldness and burn fiercely. Send forth your fiery tongues, release the flames everywhere, and scatter the embers without hesitation. Release your rays, be the swiftest, O Agni; be the unassailable protector of this people. Whoever brings harm from afar or near, let none of them overcome or afflict us. Rise up, Agni, extend yourself; let your sharpness scatter all enemies. Whoever has kindled hostility against us, burn them down as dry wood is consumed by fire. Stand upright, strike back from us, and reveal the divine powers, O Agni. Remove the firm bonds of sorcerers, destroy the lineage of the unborn, annihilate the enemies. With your brilliance, O Agni, I subdue them. Agni is the crown of heaven and the lord of earth; he invigorates the seeds of the waters. By the strength of Indra, I subdue them. You, Agni, are the leader of sacrifice and of the sacred realm, joined with auspicious companions. You have placed your head in heaven and your tongue in the sun; you have made yourself the carrier of offerings. You are firm, established by the maker of all. May the ocean not harm you, nor the swift-winged bird; strengthen the earth, unshaken. May Prajapati subdue you upon the back of the waters, in the ocean here. Spread out, expand, and shine forth; you are the earth. You are Bhū, you are the earth, you are Aditi, the universal supporter, bearer of all worlds. Hold the earth, strengthen the earth, and do not injure the earth. For all breath—inhalation, exhalation, upward breath, foundation, and movement—may Agni protect you for my well-being, with a shield, with peace, with that divine Angiras power; sit firmly. O Durva grass, which sprouts again and again from every joint and rough part, so may you, with a hundred and a thousand shoots, spread forth for us. To you, who stretch out in a hundred ways and grow in a thousand, O divine brick, we offer worship and oblation. O Agni, those rays of yours in the sun that reach to the sky—by all those lights today, make us shine among people. O gods, the lights of yours in the sun, those among cows and horses—Indra and Agni, with all those lights, O Brihaspati, bestow radiance upon us. The sovereign established the light; the self-ruler established the light. May Prajapati seat you, radiant, on the earth’s surface. Grant all light to breath, to expiration, to circulation; Agni, you are the lord—by that divinity, O Angiras, sit firm. Madhu and Madhava, the spring seasons, are joined within Agni. May heaven and earth be prepared, may the waters and plants be prepared, may the fires, each with their own vow, be prepared for supremacy. Let those fires, united in mind, between heaven and earth—those spring seasons—approach as the gods approach Indra; by that divinity, O Angiras, sit firm. You are Ashadha, enduring, conquering enemies, conquering those who lead armies; you possess a thousandfold strength—may I win with you. Sweet is night and dawn, sweet is the earthly realm; may the sky, our father, be sweet for us. May the forest tree be sweet for us, may the sun be sweet for us; may our cows be filled with sweetness. Settle deep in the waters; may the sun not scorch you, nor Agni Vaiśvānara. Let your offspring be unbroken in their line—may the celestial rain accompany you. The lord of waters, the bull of the bricks, flowed together through three oceans, through the heavens, clothed in excrement, in the world of good deeds—go there where the ancestors have gone before. May the great heaven and earth measure out this sacrifice for us; may they nourish us with abundance. Behold the deeds of Vishnu, from where the sacred laws are made manifest; he is the fitting friend of Indra. You are firm, the support, born first from these origins, O Jātavedas; may he, knowing, carry the offering to the gods with the Gāyatrī, Triṣṭubh, and Anuṣṭubh meters. Delight in nourishment, in wealth, in strength, in glory, in vigor, for offspring; you are the sovereign, the self-ruler—may Sarasvatī and the two rivers grant you abundance. O Agni, yoke those virtuous horses of yours, O god, who swiftly carry the offering.
