Listen, O youngest and most mighty, radiant Agni, endowed with your own power. After you, others drink; after you, they praise; the worshipper, in reverence, honors your form. Awake, O wise one, generous lord of wealth, bestower of riches—drive away our hatreds. Homage to you, all-creating Agni. May the Ādityas, Rudras, and Vasus kindle you anew, and may the priests bring you riches through sacrifice. With ghee, let your form increase, and may the true desires of the sacrificer be fulfilled. Depart, O spirits—both ancient and new—scatter away from here. Yama has granted a resting place on earth, and the ancestors have fashioned this world for him. You are consciousness itself, Agni; you sustain desire. Let this sustaining of desire abide in me for you. You are the ashes of Agni, his purīṣa, laid upon the funeral pyre, well-arranged and placed above. Take refuge, O sacred one. This is that Agni, in whom Indra placed the pressed Soma, swelling within him. You are praised, O Jātavedas, like a thousandfold prize, like a swift horse yoked to the chariot, by those who seek strength. Agni, your radiance shines in heaven, on earth, in plants and waters—by which you stretch out the wide midspace. Your brilliance is the shining ocean, the seer among men. You wish to reach the flood of heaven, Agni, and approach the mighty gods. The waters in the shining realms beyond the sun, and those below, attend you. The purīṣya fires, united with their attendants, free from falsehood and disease, accept the sacrifice and grant great blessings. Grant us, Agni, the ever-desired, abundant, and lasting wealth of cows for the one who invokes you. May our son be victorious, and may your favor be with us. This is your sacrificial seat, from which you were born and shone forth. Knowing this, ascend it for us and increase our wealth. You are established by that divinity, O Angiras; sit firm. Fill the world, fill every opening; sit steadfast. Indra, Agni, and Bṛhaspati have established you in this sacred womb. The Prishnis, skilled in milking, strain Soma for him, the drinker of sweet juice, in the three shining realms of heaven, the birthplaces of the gods. All hymns magnify Indra, whose expanse is like the ocean—best among charioteers, true lord of prizes, master. May you two be united in purpose and affection, shining, well-disposed; dwelling together, may you obtain nourishment and strength. May your minds, vows, and thoughts be united. Agni, be the lord of the purīṣya fires for us; grant nourishment and strength to the sacrificer. Agni, you are the purīṣya fire, rich and full of prosperity. Having made all directions auspicious, sit here in your own seat. May you both be of one mind, conscious and unstained for us. Do not harm the sacrifice or its lord; O Jātavedas, be auspicious for us today. As a mother bears her son, so let the earth bear Agni, the purīṣya fire, in her own womb, O fire-pit. May Prajāpati, the all-creator, together with all the gods and seasons, release her. Seek out the one who does not offer Soma, who does not sacrifice; pursue the thief and the robber. Seek another, not us, says the goddess Nirṛti. Homage to you, Nirṛti, of sharp radiance; the iron bond is cut apart. With Yama and the Yamas, place him in the highest heaven. For whom you, O terrible one, have become—of these bonds, I offer this for their release. Whom people call Earth, in delusion—O Nirṛti, I know you all around. The noose which Nirṛti bound upon your necks is now loosened; I cast it away from your midst. Newly born, go to your father. Homage to Bhuti who has done this. He is the dwelling, the meeting place of riches; he beholds all forms with the powers. Like a god, Savitar, true in law, Indra did not stand in the battle of the paths. The wise harness the ploughs, stretching out the yokes separately; the thoughtful, with favor, among the gods. Join the ploughs, stretch out the yokes, make the furrows; sow the seed in the prepared womb. By voice is creation, with burden they are—may the ripe ears come to us, O furrows, nearer. May the well-sharpened ploughs till the earth well; may the ploughmen approach with their teams; may the furrows, pleased with offering, and sweet-fruited plants grant us abundance. Let Sita be anointed with ghee and honey, approved by all the gods and Maruts; rich in nourishment, swelling with milk—O Sita, increase for us with milk. The plough, adorned, well-guided, delighting in Soma, sows cow, sheep, fatness, and abundance, as the chariot carries the traveler. Yield milk as you desire, wish-granting one, for Mitra, Varuna, Indra, the Ashvins, Pushan, for the people, for the plants. Be released, O unyoked ones, divine-going; we have crossed the far side of darkness, we have attained this light. With the year, with the seasons; with dawn, with the ruddy ones; with the Ashvins, with their powers; with the sun, with his charioteer; with Agni Vaiśvānara, with Ida, with ghee—svāhā! Those plants born first, in ancient times, for the gods, in three ages—of the brown ones, I recall a hundred abodes and seven. A hundred, O mothers, are your abodes, a thousand are your shoots; therefore, O Indra of a hundred deeds, may you all make this my remedy. Rejoice, O plants, flowering, fruitful; like swift horses, let the herbs bearing fruit carry us across. Plants, I address you as mothers, goddesses; may I obtain a horse, a cow, clothing, and your spirit, O plants. Your seat is in the ashvattha tree, your dwelling in the leaf; you are nourished by cows, it is said, when you renew a man. Where the plants have gathered, like kings in an assembly—he is called a sage, a healer, who drives away demons and disease. Rich in horses, rich in Soma, increasing strength, full of vigor—may all the plants come to us for complete safety.
