Agni, the radiant and generous one, stands as the great supporter of all wealth and the very foundation of treasures. He is the source from which wisdom springs, the vigilant guardian of Soma, and the son born of strength. As king in the waters, Agni shines forth at the forefront, kindled amidst the dawning lights. He is the beacon that guides all beings, the very embryo from which the world emerges. When Agni was born, his presence filled both heaven and earth, and no stronghold could confine him—he surpassed all barriers when people worshipped him in fivefold ways. Pure and ever-shining, Agni is tireless and wise. Though immortal among mortals, he is established in their midst, sending forth red smoke and, with his bright flame, reaching up to touch the sky. Agni’s brilliance adorned the vast earth, and his splendor is difficult to withstand. He shines with glory, ever-youthful, having been born anew when heaven, abundant with seed, gave him life. Whatever auspicious offering is prepared with clarified butter—O Agni, god of bright flame—may that offering be led by you straight to wealth, to favor, to divine grace, O youngest one. Share these offerings with the one who is renowned in hymns; may he, beloved by Sūrya and by you, Agni, who splits forth at birth, be honored as he bursts into being. Those who sacrifice have entrusted all desirable riches to you, Agni, throughout the days. Desiring prosperity, worshippers join with you and gather in the cattle-rich enclosure. May you, gracious among men and universal in your reach, stand firm with the seers who guard Soma. May we invoke Heaven and Earth without enmity, and may the gods grant us wealth and heroic strength. Let us honor Agni with kindling, awaken our divine guest with offerings of ghee, and pour our oblations into him. May all the gods, with their thoughts, raise you up, Agni; be auspicious to us, O beautiful and radiant one. Go forth, Agni, shining with light and auspicious flames; with your great rays and brilliance, do not harm our offspring or our bodies. When Agni roared, his thunder was like the sky’s, the earth trembled, and the plants adorned themselves. Newly born, he blazed out, his radiance spreading and shining between heaven and earth. The fame of Agni, of the Bharata, is heard even when the sun does not shine with its great light. He who stood steadfast for Pūru in battles—the divine guest—shone forth, bringing us auspiciousness. O divine Waters, receive this sacred ash; make it gentle and fragrant in this world. May the clans bow to him; may he bring forth good wives. As a mother carries her son, so may you, O Waters, bear away this sin. Agni, you dwell among the waters and the plants; you are born again from their wombs. You are the embryo of plants and trees, the seed of all beings, and the very embryo of the waters. Having entered your womb with ash, with the waters and the earth, Agni, you shine forth, joined with your mothers, and sit again. When you return to your seat in the waters and earth, you lie as in the lap of your mother, most auspicious within her. Return again with nourishment, O Agni—bring us food and life, and protect us from harm. Return with wealth, thrive with sustenance, and spread yourself everywhere. Hear my words, youngest and mightiest one, endowed with your own power. The worshipper drinks after you, praises you, and honors your form, O Agni. Awaken, O wise one, generous lord of wealth and bestower of riches; drive away our hatreds. Homage to you, the all-creating one. May the Ādityas, Rudras, and Vasus kindle you again; may the priests bring you riches with their sacrifices. With ghee, increase your form, and may the sacrificer’s true desires be fulfilled. Depart, vanish, scatter away, you who are here, both ancient and new. Yama has given a resting place on earth, and the ancestors have prepared this world for him. You are consciousness itself, the sustainer of desire—may that sustaining be in me for you. You are Agni’s sacred ash and purīṣa. You who are laid on the funeral pyre, well-arranged and placed above—take refuge. This is that Agni in whom Indra placed the pressed Soma, swelling in his belly. You are praised, O Jātavedas, like a thousandfold prize, like a swift horse yoked to the chariot, by those who seek strength. Agni, whatever radiance is yours in heaven, on earth, in plants, and in waters—by which you stretch out the wide midspace—by that brilliance, that shining one, that ocean, that seer among men. Agni, you seek to reach the flood of heaven and approach the mighty gods. The waters that stand in the shining realms beyond the sun, and those below, attend you. May the purīṣya fires, united with their attendants, free from falsehood and disease, accept the sacrifice and grant great blessings. Agni, grant us ever-desired, abundant, and lasting wealth of cows for the one who invokes you. May our son be victorious, and may your favor be with us. This is your sacrificial seat, from which you were born and shone forth. Knowing this, O Agni, ascend it for us and increase our wealth. You are established by that divinity, O Angiras; sit firm. Indra, Agni, and Bṛhaspati have established you in this womb. The Prishnis, skilled in milking, strain Soma for him—the drinker of sweet juice—in the three shining realms of heaven, the birthplaces of the gods. All the hymns magnify Indra, whose expanse is like the ocean, the finest charioteer, the true lord of prizes and master. May you two be united in purpose and affection, shining and well-disposed; dwelling together, may you gain nourishment and strength. May your minds, vows, and thoughts be united. Agni, be the lord of the purīṣya fires for us and grant nourishment and strength to the sacrificer. Agni, you are the purīṣya fire, rich and prosperous. Having made all directions auspicious, sit here in your own seat. May you both be of one mind, conscious, and pure for us. Do not harm the sacrifice or the sacrificer; O Jātavedas, be auspicious for us today. As a mother bears her son, so let the earth bear Agni, the purīṣya fire, in her womb, O fire-pit. May Prajāpati, the all-creator, together with all the gods and seasons, release her.
