Come forward, O Rudra’s lord of hosts, advancing and turning aside all misfortune. Bring joy to us as you journey across the vast midspace, with Pūṣan as your ally, ensuring the safety of our herds and granting us well-being and fearlessness. From the very seat of the earth, we call upon Agni, the purifying fire, O Angiras. May we obtain this purifying Agni, and may we ourselves bring him forth, pure and bright, as you did, O Angiras. Agni, the knower of all births, was the first to follow at the forefront of the dawns, leading through the days. He stretched out the many rays of the sun, extending heaven and earth with his radiant energy. Swiftly he comes, traveling the sacred path, shaking off all hostilities. Agni, enthroned in his great seat, desires to be seen, to reveal himself with his own eye. Having stepped onto the earth, O swift one, seek out Agni with your radiance. Show us, for those who seek, where we might find him hidden within the earth. For you, heaven is the back, earth the seat, the midspace your very self, and the ocean your womb. Revealed in your vision, stand firm against all who would attack. Step forth from this seat for our great good fortune, O giver of wealth, O swift one. May we be wise and of good counsel upon the earth, as we search for Agni in her lap. The giver of wealth, the swift one, has come near, approaching the good world, the well-formed earth. From there, let us unearth Agni, whose face is beautiful, ascending by his own power to the highest heaven. To you, Agni, I draw near with my mind and with ghee, for you pervade all the worlds. You are vast, spreading wide with strength, great and abundant in food, ever eager and shining. From every side I approach you; may you accept this with a mind free from harm. Radiant Agni, youthful and beautiful, desired in form, I touch you with my body, you who are ever growing. Agni, lord of strength and sage, has encompassed the offerings and bestows treasures upon the worshipper. Around you, O Agni, we build our city, wise and mighty, day by day; you are of unyielding form, the slayer of all who break the order. You, Agni, are from the heavens, the swiftest among us. You are from the waters, from the stones, from the woods, and from the plants. Among men you are born pure, O lord of men. By the impulse of god Savitar, by the arms of the Ashvins, by the hands of Pūṣan, from the seat of earth I dig for Agni, rich in offerings, of the Angirases. Radiant Agni, shining with unceasing light, auspicious for the people and harmless, from the seat of earth I call you forth. You are the back of the waters, the womb of Agni, swelling about the ocean. Growing great, you emerge in the lotus, by the measure of heaven, spread wide in your expanse. You are both shelter and armor, unbroken and abundant. With your spreading radiance, gather your goods, O Agni, rich in offerings. With united dwellings, knowing the light, harmonious in strength and self, we bear Agni within us, ever radiant. You, Agni, are rich in offerings, the bearer of all. Atharvan first churned you out, O Agni, from the lotus, the very summit of all that moves. The seer Dadhyanc, son of Atharvan, kindled you—the slayer of Vritra and destroyer of fortresses. The bull Pathya, too, kindled you—the slayer of foes and winner of wealth in every battle. Sit, O Hotar, in your own place, wise one; seat the sacrifice in the womb of good deeds. Worship the gods with offering, O Agni, and grant great vigor to the worshipper. The Hotar, knowing, has sat down in the sacred seat, shining fiercely, skilled and steadfast, with unbroken vow, of firm resolve, Vasiṣṭha, bearer of a thousand, with a pure tongue, O Agni. Sit together, O great one, blaze forth, most beloved of the gods. Let your reddish smoke rise, praised and beautiful. Send forth the divine waters, sweet and free from disease, for the offspring. Let the well-fruited plants rise up from their seat. May the wind, Mātariśvan, place within you a heart upright and pure. You who move among the gods as the breath of life, may the offering be made to you, O god. Born well, together with light, may you attain shelter and protection, O Agni. O shining one, wrap yourself in the garment of all forms. Rise up, O you of flawless sacrifice, with our divine thought. Shine forth with your great radiance for vision—come, Agni, with auspicious praises. Stand upright for our help, as the god Savitṛ does. Upright giver of strength, whom we invoke with anointments and offerings. You are born as the embryo of earth and heaven, Agni, lovely and carried in the plants. As the brilliant child, you move through the seasons, crying out from your mothers, echoing among the cows. Be firm, O strong one; be swift, O vigorous steed; be broad, O well-seated one, Agni, bearer of the sacrificial offerings. Be auspicious to the offspring, to humankind, O descendant of Angiras. Let not heaven and earth, nor your flames, nor the midspace, nor the trees be harmed. Let the roaring, neighing steed come forth, the braying ass, carrying Agni, the bearer of offerings. Let him not tread on the path of life; carrying the virile Agni, the powerful one, the embryo of waters, the oceanic one—Agni, come for our enjoyment. Truth, truth; truth, truth. We bear Agni, the bearer of offerings, endowed with the spirit of Angiras. O plants, rejoice as this auspicious Agni comes to you; scatter all calamities and evil, drive away harmful thoughts from us. O plants, take hold of those with flowers, those with sweet fruits; this is your embryo, the priestly one, let him settle in the ancient seat. Shining with broad radiance, drive away enemies, demons, and diseases; may we dwell in the great shelter of Agni, the well-invoked, under his guidance. O waters, you are bringers of delight; grant us nourishment for great battle and vision. That most auspicious essence of yours, let it be shared here with us, like mothers who nourish. Therefore, let us come to you, by whose dwelling you invigorate; O waters, generate us as well. Mitra, joining earth and land with light, the well-born, knower of births, I join you for the offspring, for freedom from disease. The Rudras, joining earth, kindled the great light; their radiance, ever pure, shines among the gods.
