You are the very essence and vigor of dominion—the source from which sovereignty arises, the central point from which it radiates. You are the power by which Indra conquered Vṛtra; you belong to Mitra and to Varuṇa. Through you, may this one, too, overcome obstacles as Indra did. You are steadfast and strong, the one who breaks through barriers, the very earth itself. Guard him—guard him in every direction: east, west, south, and all around. Now, let the young men come forth, radiant and visible. Agni, the lord of the household, is present. Indra, renowned among the elders, is manifest. Mitra and Varuṇa, unwavering in their vows, stand revealed. Pūṣan, who knows all, appears. Heaven and earth themselves, givers of every blessing, are present. Aditi, sheltering all beneath her boundless sky, is here. Rise up to the south: may the Triṣṭubh meter shield you there, along with the Bṛhat Sāman, the Pañcadaśa Stoma, the summer season, dominion, and wealth. Ascend now to the west: may the Jagatī meter protect you, with the Vairūpa Sāman, the Saptadaśa Stoma, the rainy season, the people, and wealth. Move to the north: let the Anuṣṭubh meter guard you, with the Vairāja Sāman, the Ekaviṃśa Stoma, the autumn season, the fruit, and wealth. Ascend upward: may the Paṅkti meter, the Śākvara and Raivata Sāmans, the Triṇava and Trayastrinśa Stomas, the winter and cool seasons, brilliance, and wealth shield you. The head of Namuci lies low, conquered. You are the radiance of Soma—may that brilliance become my own. Protect from death. You are vigor, you are strength, you are immortal. Golden dawns shine forth; both Indras have arisen, and the sun ascends the sky. Varuṇa and Mitra, rise to your throne and from there, gaze upon Aditi and Diti. You are Mitra, you are Varuṇa. With the glory of Soma, I anoint you—also with the brilliance of Agni, the splendor of the sun, and the might of Indra. Be lord among rulers; shine forth and protect. O gods, grant that this one be free from rivals, well-joined in marriage, destined for great dominion, great supremacy, great sovereignty over people, and the power of Indra. This child, born of that father and that mother, for her, for this lineage—he is your king. Soma is our king, the king of the Brahmins. From the backs of the mountain bull, the sisters move like boats, rising from below, following the deep serpent onward. You are the stride of Viṣṇu—the great stride, the step that measures the worlds. O Lord of creatures, none but you has embraced all these forms. May your desire, for which we make offering, be fulfilled for us. This one is his father, that one is his father—may we be masters of riches. Svāhā. O Rudra, whatever your highest name is among the herd, may the offering be placed in that; you are the one we desire. Svāhā. You are Indra’s thunderbolt. For Mitra and Varuṇa, the two sovereigns, I yoke you as the instrument of command. For safety and strength, you are unbroken, bright. By the power of the Maruts, conquer! With the mind of the waters, with united sense. Indra, may we never become weak, unyoked, or forgetful of the sacred word. Stand upon the chariot, O wielder of the thunderbolt, grasp the reins of your own horses. To Agni, lord of the house—svāhā. To Soma, lord of the forest—svāhā. To the strength of the Maruts—svāhā. To the power of Indra—svāhā. O Mother Earth, do not harm me, nor will I harm you. The swan dwells in purity, the shining one in the midspace, the priest at the altar, the guest in the house. He abides among men, among the best, in truth, in the sky; born of water, of cows, of truth, of mountains—truth, the vast. This is its life—place its life in me. You are vigor—place vigor in me. You are nourishment—place nourishment in me. By Indra’s strength, I take up both arms, made powerful. You are pleasant, well-seated, the very womb of sovereignty. Sit in comfort, sit in well-being, sit in the womb of sovereignty. Varuṇa, devoted to the ghee-offering, has seated himself among the dwellings with good purpose, for sovereignty. May these five directions be subject to you, O all-conquering one. O Brahman, you are Brahmā, you are Savitṛ, the true impeller. You are Varuṇa, of true strength; you are Indra, of all strength; you are Rudra, most gracious. Maker of much, giver of prosperity, increaser—you are Indra’s thunderbolt. With it, grant me success. Agni, broad, lord of order, accepting—let him enter the clarified butter, svāhā. Made with svāhā, with the rays of Sūrya, strive for the central offering among those born together. By Savitṛ, the inspirer; by Sarasvatī’s speech; by Tvaṣṭṛ’s forms; by Pūṣan’s cattle; by Indra, by Bṛhaspati, by Brahman, by Varuṇa’s strength, by Agni’s brilliance, by Soma the king, by Viṣṇu, by the tenth deity—I am set forth. Cook for the Aśvins, cook for Sarasvatī, cook for Indra, the well-woven. Vāyu is purified by the purifier; Soma flows well. Indra’s yoked companion. May we, with barley as is fitting, distribute gifts in due order. Here, make ready the food for those who, sitting on the sacred grass, offer praise and sacrifice. I have taken you up for the Aśvins, for Sarasvatī, for Indra, the well-woven. We, with the Aśvins, drank the surā with Namuci the Asura; O shining lords, ever-drinking, support Indra in the rites. Like parents their son, the Aśvins protected Indra with their skills and remedies; when you, mighty one, drank the surā with the Śacīs, Sarasvatī, O generous one, praised you. Harnessing the first thought to truth, Savitṛ impelled the understanding; he kindled Agni’s light and brought it to earth. With a yoked mind, we seek the impulse of god Savitṛ, the power that leads to heaven. The divine Savitṛ, joined with the gods, by inspired thought ascends to heaven; may Savitṛ, the great light, inspire them to action. The sages harness the mind, their thoughts, the wise among the wise, the great seer; he has established the sacrificial fires, knowing the rites, and the great praise of Savitṛ surrounds him. Let us, with reverence, yoke your ancient prayer; let the hymn go forth like a chariot on its path. All you sons of immortality who dwell in the divine abodes, listen. After whose departure the other gods followed, by the might and greatness of the divine one—he who measured out the earthly realms—that god Savitṛ, by his greatness, established the regions. O god Savitṛ, inspire the sacrifice, inspire the lord of the sacrifice for good fortune. May the celestial Gandharva, knower of signs, purify our inspiration; may the lord of speech sweeten our words. Lead this sacrifice, O Savitṛ, to the divine, to friendship, to victory in the assembly, to wealth, to the winning of heaven. Strengthen our hymn with the Gāyatrī, the Rathantara, the great Gāyatrī measure—svāhā. By the impulse of Savitṛ, by the arms of the Aśvins, by the hands of Pūṣan, I place you with the Gāyatrī metre, O Angiras, from the seat of earth; bring forth the purifying Agni, O Angiras, with the Triṣṭubh metre. You are the cloud, you are the woman; with you, may we kindle Agni from the seat, with the Jagatī metre, O Angiras. Placing the golden cloud in his hand, Savitṛ bears it; drawing forth Agni’s light, bring it up from the earth, with the Anuṣṭubh metre, O Angiras. Run forward, swift one, to the prize, following the best course; your highest birth is in heaven, your navel in the midspace, your womb on earth. May you two yoke the ass in this rite, O mighty and generous ones, bearing Agni, the bringer of blessings. In every union, in every contest, we call upon the most powerful, as friends, for Indra’s aid.
