Let me share with you the sacred tale as revealed in these verses, weaving their wisdom into a single, flowing narrative: Swift as the wind, the noble horse is called forth, yoked and shining in splendor like the very hand of Indra. The Maruts, those all-knowing storm gods, harness his power, while Tvaṣṭṛ, the divine craftsman, bestows speed upon his feet. Hidden within this swift one is a secret force, encircled like a falcon riding the wind. By this inner swiftness, he becomes strong, victorious in every contest, able to carry us safely through the assembly. Together, the swift ones, ever triumphant, press onward, seeking the share that belongs to Bṛhaspati. By the pure impulse of Savitar, the god of true power and creation, I ascend to the highest heavens of Bṛhaspati and Indra. Through this divine impulse, I have reached those lofty realms. May Bṛhaspati and Indra each win the prize, may their names be spoken in victory, and may their triumph be proclaimed. The harmonious speech that arises in this sacred moment brings victory—by it, Bṛhaspati has won the prize, and so too has Indra. Let the forest-lords be released, for the work is accomplished. Empowered by Savitar’s creative impulse, and with Bṛhaspati’s favor, may I too win the prize, victorious in every contest. The swift ones uphold the path, measure the distances, and proceed unwaveringly to the goal. The horse, bound at the neck and seated at the side, hastens forward. Dadhikrā, resolute and full of intent, follows, marking the tracks and shaking his mane as he runs. As he races, his mane streams like a banner in the wind, resounding gloriously. Dadhikrā circles the track like a falcon in flight, protector and bringer of nourishment. May these swift ones bring auspiciousness to our offerings—quick to respond, radiant with light, driving away wolves and demons, keeping all harm at bay. Let the horses, eager and wise, hear our call and listen to our invocation. Rich in treasures and wisdom, victorious in contests, they claim great wealth for us. In every contest, may these swift ones shield us; among treasures, may the inspired and immortal truth-knowers protect us. Drink this honeyed offering, rejoice, be satisfied, and depart by the paths of the gods. May strength be born within me; may Heaven and Earth, of all forms, come to me. Let my fathers and mothers draw near; let Soma come with the gift of immortality. O swift ones, victorious and purified, seek out Bṛhaspati’s share. With salutations—svāhā!—we honor Āpaya, Svāpaya, Apijāya, Kratu, Vasava, Aharpati, Ahan Mugdhā, Mugdhā Vainamśinā, Vinamśinā Āntyāyana, Āntya Bhauvana, the lord of the world, and the overlord. Through sacrifice, may life, breath, sight, hearing, and strength be established. By sacrifice, sacrifice itself is upheld. We have become the children of Prajāpati, reached the world of the gods, and attained immortality. May strength, heroism, resolve, and brilliance be with us, bestowed for your sake. Salutations to Mother Earth—this is your realm; you are our guide, our restraint, our firm foundation. For cultivation, security, wealth, and nourishment, I appoint you. In the beginning, the birth of vigor gave rise to Soma, king among plants and waters. May these become sweet for us, and may we, as vigilant priests, serve well in this realm. The birth of vigor has reached the heavens, and the sovereign has encompassed all worlds, giving even to those who do not give, with full knowledge. May he grant us wealth and heroes. This vigor now pervades all worlds, and the wise king moves among his people, increasing their prosperity—may that prosperity be with us. For aid, we invoke Soma the king and Agni, the Ādityas, Viṣṇu, Sūrya, Brahmā, and Bṛhaspati. Let Aryaman, Bṛhaspati, and Indra be urged to give; let speech, Viṣṇu, Sarasvatī, Savitṛ, and the swift one bestow their blessings. Agni, come to us, gracious and kind—grant us victory over thousands, for you are the giver of wealth. May Aryaman, Pūṣan, Bṛhaspati, and the divine speech grant us their gifts. I place you in the impulse of Savitṛ, in the arms of the Aśvins, in Pūṣan’s hands; for Sarasvatī, guide of speech, I appoint you, and for Bṛhaspati, I anoint you with sovereignty. Agni, with a single syllable, conquered breath; the Aśvins, with two, conquered humanity; Viṣṇu, with three, conquered the three worlds; Soma, with four, conquered cattle. Pūṣan, with five, conquered the directions; Savitṛ, with six, conquered the seasons; the Maruts, with seven, conquered the domestic animals; Bṛhaspati, with eight, conquered the Gāyatrī meter. Mitra, with nine, conquered the Trivṛt chant; Varuṇa, with ten, conquered the Virāj meter; Indra, with eleven, conquered the Triṣṭubh meter; all the gods, with twelve, conquered the Jagatī meter. The Vasus, Rudras, Ādityas, Aditi, and Prajāpati each conquered their own meters and chants, extending from thirteen to seventeen syllables, and I too have conquered them. This is the share of Nirṛti—accept it, svāhā! To the divine eyes of Agni and the gods in the east, to Yama’s eyes and the gods in the south, to the eyes of all the gods in the west, to the eyes of Mitra, Varuṇa, or the Maruts in the north, and to Soma’s eyes and the blessed ones above, we make our offerings. To all the gods who watch from each direction, we offer svāhā. Agni, endure the battles, drive away our foes, overcome adversaries, and grant brilliance to our sacrifice. Again, I place you in the impulse of Savitṛ, in the arms of the Aśvins, in Pūṣan’s hands, offering with the strength of Upāmśu—the demon is slain. I appoint you for the destruction of demons; the foe is vanquished. Savitṛ brings you among the Savitṛs, Agni among the householders, Soma among the trees, Bṛhaspati in speech, Indra for supremacy, Rudra among cattle, Mitra among the truthful, and Varuṇa among the lords of law. O gods, make this one free from rivals, well-married, and grant great dominion, supremacy, and sovereignty over the people, with the power of Indra. This one, the son of that man and woman, is your king; Soma is our king, the king of Brahmins. In the beginning, the gods took hold of the waters—rich in honey, full of vigor, shining, and royal. With these, Mitra and Varuṇa anointed, and with these they led Indra beyond his enemies. The waters are the bull’s wave, the givers of the realm—grant the realm to me and to him. The waters, armored like the bull, full of vigor and flowing all around, are givers of the realm—grant the realm to me and to him. The lord and embryo of waters, givers of the realm, grant the realm. The waters, of solar skin and splendor, gentle, protectors of the march, neighing and mighty, of the Śakvarī meter, sustainers of people and of all, the sovereign waters—grant the realm to me and to him. Let the honeyed ones unite, granting great dominion to the Kṣatriya, that he may flourish. Sit unassailable, with mighty strength, granting great dominion to the Kṣatriya. You are the brilliance of Soma—may that brilliance become mine. We offer to Agni, Soma, Savitṛ, Sarasvatī, Pūṣan, Bṛhaspati, Indra, Ghoṣa, Śloka, Aṃśa, Bhaga, and Aryaman. You stand in the filter, O pair belonging to Viṣṇu. I purify you with Savitṛ’s impulse and the sun’s rays. You are unblemished, kin of speech, born of austerity, the gift of Soma, royal and pure. The waters, shining and invincible, adorned and companions at the feast, have come. In their dwellings, Varuṇa has established his seat, and within these mothers dwells the child of the waters. Thus flows the sacred story, a tapestry of swiftness, sacrifice, victory, and the blessings of the gods, all woven together in the eternal rhythm of Sanātana Dharma.
