Here is a retelling of Śukla Yajur Veda 8.51–9.27 as a single, flowing narrative: Within this sacred space, delight abides; here, joy is found, and here are established steadfastness and self-control. With reverence, we approach and uphold the seat of the Mother, nourishing her with our offerings. May she grant us abundant wealth. Through our rites, we have attained the prosperity that comes from the sacrificial session; we have touched the light of immortality. Rising from earth toward heaven, we have discovered the radiant brilliance that belongs to the gods alone—the very light of the sun. Indra and Parvata, mighty ones armed with foremost weapons, protect us: strike down any who would attack, wielding your thunderbolt against each threat. Let those who flee remain distant, and those who approach be lost in darkness. O heroic Indra, drive away all our enemies from every side, and bless us with good offspring, with sons of valor, with strength, and with prosperity. The cosmic order is reflected in these acts: the supreme Parameṣṭhin is invoked, Prajāpati is spoken in word, Andha is the seer, Savitṛ presides over union, Viśvakarman is honored in consecration, and Pūṣan is present in the purchase of Soma. Indra and the Maruts rise for the sacred purchase; Asura is being bargained for; Mitra is bought; Viṣṇu, the all-pervader, is seated in the thigh, yet as the supporter of men, Viṣṇu is being driven away. Soma, the sacred drink, has arrived; Varuṇa is seated on the bench; Agni occupies the fire altar; Indra stands at the offering place; Atharvan is brought near. All the gods are present in the drops of Soma; Viṣṇu, the one who delights in satisfaction, is being filled; Yama is pressed; Viṣṇu is gathered; Vāyu is purified; Shukra, the essence of milk, is purified; the churned is the essence of roasted grain. All the gods are gathered into the cups; Asura is raised for the offering; Rudra is invoked; Vāta is turned about; those who are merely observant are set aside; the sacred food is consumed; the Fathers and the Nārāśaṃsas are present. The river is raised for ablution; the ocean is brought near; the waters overflow. By the strength that upholds the regions—mighty and unconquered—Viṣṇu and Varuṇa, rulers of all, have come at the very first invocation. Through sacrifice, the gods ascended to heaven—may such wealth come to me. Through sacrifice, men reached the midspace—may such wealth come to me. Through sacrifice, the Fathers attained the earth—may such wealth come to me. From whichever world was reached by sacrifice, may good fortune come to me. There are thirty-four threads stretched by those who offer sacrifice through their power; if any thread is cut, I restore it now. May the hot drink reach the gods. The milk of the sacrifice spreads wide, reaching in many directions, extending eightfold to heaven. Draw forth this milk of sacrifice; may I be granted great offspring, abundant wealth, and a full span of life. Soma, flow forth with gold, with horses, with heroes. Bring us a prize rich in cattle. O god Savitṛ, impel our sacrifice and the lord of sacrifice for our good fortune. May the celestial Gandharva, knower of signs, purify our omen; may the lord of speech taste our prize. You are the seat of firmness, of men, of mind. Having approached, you are accepted; for Indra, I take you, well-pleasing. This is your seat, most pleasing to Indra. You are the seat in the waters, in the ghee, in the sky. Having approached, you are accepted; for Indra, I take you, well-pleasing. This is your seat, most pleasing to Indra. You are the seat on earth, in the midspace, in heaven, among the gods, and in the firmament. Having approached, you are accepted; for Indra, I take you, well-pleasing. This is your seat, most pleasing to Indra. The essence of the waters, flowing upward and present in the sun, is gathered together. The finest essence of the waters, I take for you. Having approached, you are accepted; for Indra, I take you, well-pleasing. This is your seat, most pleasing to Indra. O pressed offerings, carriers of nourishment, you are presented to the inspired sage with intention. Of you, most beloved, I have taken the full measure of sustenance and strength. You are received, accepted for Indra; I take you, well-pleasing. This is your womb; for Indra, I take you as most pleasing. You are joined together—may you both cover me with goodness. If you are separated, do not cover me with evil. You are Indra’s thunderbolt, you are strength; by you, this strength is established. At the birth of strength, we proclaim the earth, the great mother, as Aditi. Within her, the entire world is contained; may Savitar establish right order within her for us. In the waters dwells the immortal, in the waters is the remedy; among the waters, in their praises, may the horses become swift. Divine waters, whatever wave or surge or swelling you possess, by that may our strength be established. The wind, the mind, and the Gandharvas—these twenty-seven—first yoked the horse, placing swiftness within him. Become swift, O noble steed, when yoked; shine in glory like Indra’s right hand. Let the Maruts, all-knowing, yoke you; may Tvaṣṭṛ place speed in your feet. The swiftness hidden within you, O swift one, encircled like a falcon moving in the wind—by that, become powerful, victorious in contests, and able to carry us across in the assembly. O swift ones, victorious, advancing to strength, seek out the share of Bṛhaspati. By the impulse of god Savitar, of true power, may I ascend the highest heaven of Bṛhaspati; by his impulse, may I ascend the highest heaven of Indra. By the impulse of Savitar, of true creation, I have ascended the highest heaven of Bṛhaspati and of Indra. Bṛhaspati, win the prize; speak the word for Bṛhaspati; cause Bṛhaspati to win the prize. Indra, win the prize; speak the word for Indra; cause Indra to win the prize. Let your true, harmonious speech arise, by which Bṛhaspati has won the prize—Bṛhaspati has won; O forest-lords, be released. Let your true, harmonious speech arise, by which Indra has won the prize—Indra has won; O forest-lords, be released. By the impulse of god Savitar, of true creation, as one victorious in contests by Bṛhaspati, may I win the prize. O swift ones, victorious, upholding the path, measuring the distances, proceed to the goal. The swift horse hastens, bound at the neck, seated at the side. Dadhikrā, full of resolve, follows after, marking the path, shaking his mane along the track. As he runs, his mane streams like a banner in the wind, resounding. Like a falcon in flight, Dadhikrā circles the track; he is the protector, the bringer of nourishment. May the swift ones be auspicious for us in the offerings—divine, quick to respond, shining with light. Driving away wolves and demons, may they keep all harm far from us. May those horses, swift to answer the call, all hear our invocation; may the swift ones, quick to respond, listen. Possessing a thousand treasures, rich in wisdom, victorious, they have seized great wealth in the contests. In every contest, may the swift ones protect us; among treasures, may the inspired, immortal, truth-knowing ones shelter us. Drink of this honey, rejoice, be satisfied, and depart by the gods’ paths. May the birth of strength come to me; may Heaven and Earth in all their forms come to me; may my fathers and mothers come to me; may Soma come to me with immortality. O swift ones, victorious in contests, advancing to strength, purified, seek out the share of Bṛhaspati. To Āpaya, to Svāpaya, to Apijāya, to Kratu, to Vasava, to Aharpati, to Ahan Mugdhā, to Mugdhā Vainamśinā, to Vinamśinā Āntyāyana, to Āntya Bhauvana, to the lord of the world, to the overlord—svāhā to each! May life be established through sacrifice. May breath, sight, hearing, the back, and sacrifice itself be established through sacrifice. We have become the children of Prajāpati; we have reached the world of the gods; we have become immortal. May strength, heroism, resolve, and brilliance be with us. Salutation to Mother Earth, salutation again to Mother Earth. This is your realm; you are the guide, the restrainer, the firm foundation. For cultivation, for security, for wealth, for nourishment, I appoint you. In the beginning, the birth of vigor produced Soma, king among plants and waters. May these become sweet for us; may we be vigilant in this realm, as priests. The birth of vigor has reached heaven, and the sovereign encompasses all worlds. He gives even to the one who does not give, knowing; may he grant us wealth with all heroes. Indeed, the birth of vigor has arisen, pervading all worlds. The wise king moves among us, increasing the people’s prosperity; may it be with us. For help, we invoke Soma the king and Agni, the Ādityas, Viṣṇu, Sūrya, Brahmā, and Bṛhaspati. Urge Aryaman, Bṛhaspati, and Indra to give; Speech, Viṣṇu, Sarasvatī, Savitṛ, and the swift one—svāhā to all. Thus, the sacred story unfolds, woven with offerings, invocations, and the eternal blessings of the gods.
