May all the Maruts, the storm gods, come to us today, along with every fire that has been kindled and all the gods, bringing their help and blessings. Let all forms of wealth and strength be granted to us. O all you gods—those who dwell in the midspace, those who abide in the heavens, those who speak with the tongue of Agni, and all who are worthy of worship—hear my call. Come, be seated upon this sacred grass, and rejoice in our offering. To you, the foremost gods, worthy of sacrifice, is granted immortality and the highest share. O Savitar, you spread out your gifts, bestowing life upon mortals. To Vayu, I direct my highest thoughts—for abundant wealth, for protection that encompasses all, and for mastery in chariot-driving. O radiant one, you lead the poets and the shining chariots; you are ever worthy of worship. Indra and Vayu, these pressed offerings are dedicated to you. Come to us with favor, for the flowing Soma delights your hearts. I call upon Mitra, pure in wisdom, and Varuna, the upholder of righteousness; together, they bring clarity and luminous thought. O wondrous, youthful Ashvins, these pressed offerings are for you, set upon the well-prepared grass. Come by the path of Rudra, as you did for the ancient ones, as you did for Vena. When Sarama discovered the broken path through the mountains—the great ancient way—who was her companion? She led the foremost, the swift-footed in speech, and sang the first cry, knowing the way. No one else knew the track except Vaishvanara, the ancient path of Agni. The immortals strengthened him, the undying Vaishvanara, to conquer the realm, O gods. We invoke Indra and Agni, fierce and destroyers of foes; may they show us their grace. Let men sing to Indu, the purifier, as they approach the gods. Those who aided you, Maghavan, in the slaying; those who stood with you in the battle of Shambara, O wielder of tawny steeds; those who fought for the cows; and the priests who now praise you—drink, Indra, the Soma with your companions, the Maruts. Born mighty, fierce for strength and speed, delightful and most vigorous, filled with pride—even the Maruts increased Indra’s power from the time his mother placed the hero in her womb. Come to us, Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, come to our share, O great one, with your mighty aids. You, Indra, are victorious in every contest. You destroy enmity and are the creator of universal victory; you overcome all who challenge you. The earths themselves followed your force, rushing like mothers after a child; all your adversaries you subdue in your wrath, O Indra, when you conquer Vṛtra. Through sacrifice, we approach the favor of the gods. May the Ādityas be gracious to us; may your benevolence turn toward us and grant us a clear path, removing all distress. O Savitar, with your unfailing guardians and auspicious ones, protect our lives today. Golden-tongued, bring us fresh prosperity and shield us so that no evil speaker may rule over us. The pure ones have streamed forth with vigor, together with the priests and the sweet Soma juices. Vayu, bring your teams and come to drink the pressed Soma for your delight. The cows have come near, great givers of sacrificial riches, their ears shining golden. Among the children of poets, in the house of skill and wisdom, the devourers are seated, abiding in their place. Come, divine priests, with your chariot shining like the sun; anoint the sacrifice with honey and renew it, for this is Vena. Their ray stretches across, slanting—below and above. They carried the seed, they were mighty; inherent power was below, aspiration above. He filled both worlds and reached the heavens; when he was born, the waters sustained him. He is led around the sacrifice, the sage, like a horse harnessed for the prize. With hymns, even those slow of speech praise the slayer of Vṛtra; with gestures, they call him forth. Let the sons of immortality hear our songs and be gracious to us. My prayers, my thoughts, my pressed Soma, and my vigor rise up; my stone pours forth. They are summoned, stirred by hymns; let the two steeds bring them to us. O Maghavan, none surpasses you; no deity is known to be your equal. Neither the newborn nor the born perishes; whatever you will, accomplish it, O greatly grown one. That was the greatest among beings, from whom the fierce, splendid, heroic one was born. Newly born, he immediately drives away enemies; all powers delight in him. O Purūvasa, may these songs of mine increase your strength—these radiant, pure, and wise hymns, which approach you with praise. For whom this Aryan, this Dāsa, this benevolent lord, or even this enemy—though hostile—has cried out in anger; to you, wealth is offered. He, with a thousand sages, empowered by their strength, spreads like the ocean. True is his greatness; I praise his might in sacrifices and among the wise. O Savitar, protect our dwelling today with unfailing guardians, with those who bring auspiciousness. Golden-tongued, grant us new prosperity and protect us from harm; let no ill-wisher rule over us. O Vayu, come to our sacrifice that reaches the sky, with good thoughts. Purified within, adorned above, I, shining, approach you. Indra and Vayu, of beautiful form, we call upon you with good invocation. May all people be free from harm and may we gather together with good minds. Thus has the mortal rejoiced in divine worship, seeking Mitra and Varuna for the offering, for the giving of oblations. Come, O Ashvins, adorn yourselves and drink the honey. The milk has been drawn, O mighty, noble givers; do not harm us, but come. Let the Lord of Speech advance, let the goddess Truth come forward. Let the gods lead our sacrifice to the heroic, noble one, the provider of abundance. The Moon moves among the waters; the swift-winged one runs in the sky. The tawny, abundant, many-nourishing wealth approaches, roaring as it comes. To each god we call for help, for favor, for strength, praising each with divine thought.
