May the Earth, generous and abundant, be filled with all that refreshes and nourishes—rich in cows, overflowing with goodness, bestowing her favors as she did for Manu. It is Viṣṇu, radiant with his divine rays, who upholds the two worlds and encircles the Earth with his sustaining power. Svāhā. Let the divine voices of the gods ring forth, resounding among the heavens. Set out to the east, preparing the sacred rite, guiding the offerings upward. May your tongues never falter—proclaim your celestial abodes, even in the hardest of places. Do not sever our lives or our lineages; dwell here, O gods, in the vastness of the Earth. Now, let me declare the mighty deeds of Viṣṇu, who measured out the regions of Earth, who established the lofty, unsupported realm above, striding three times with great power for the sake of the mighty. O Viṣṇu, from sky, earth, or the vast space between, fill both your hands with riches and bestow them upon us from every side. To Viṣṇu, I dedicate this offering. Viṣṇu is praised for his strength, fierce as a wild beast roaming the mountains; in his three great strides all the worlds find their home. You are the delight of Viṣṇu, his offspring, his bond, his steadfastness; you belong to Viṣṇu, and to him I dedicate you. By the impulse of Savitar, with the arms of the Aśvins and the hands of Pūṣan, I place you. You are a woman; here, I cut the necks of the demons. Swift and mighty, speak a powerful word for Indra. You, destroyer of demons and obstacles, belonging to Viṣṇu—away with every obstacle set against me by enemy or rival, equal or unequal, kin or stranger, born or unborn. I cast away all sorcery. You are lord of heaven, slayer of rivals, lord of sacrifice, destroyer of adversaries, lord of people, destroyer of demons, lord of all, slayer of enemies. I sprinkle you, lead you down, spread you out, place you, and carry you—destroyer of demons, breaker of obstacles, all belonging to Viṣṇu. You are Viṣṇu’s. Again, by Savitar’s impulse, the Aśvins’ arms, and Pūṣan’s hands, I place you. You are a woman, barley, driving away hatred and foes. For sky, midspace, and earth, I dedicate you. May the worlds and the ancestral seats be purified—you are the ancestral seat. Raise up the sky, fill the midspace, strengthen the earth. May the shining Maruts measure you, Mitra and Varuṇa uphold you with steadfast law. I carry you for Brahman and Kṣatra, for wealth and nourishment. Strengthen Brahman, Kṣatra, life, and progeny. You are steadfast, and so may this sacrificer be steadfast in his home, increasing with children and cattle. May heaven and earth overflow with ghee. You are Indra’s shelter, the shade of all people. May these songs surround you, O singer, from every side. May the elders follow the elder, the favored follow the favored. You are Indra’s bond, his steadfastness, his own, belonging to all the gods. You are Vibhū, the flowing one; you are fire, the carrier of offerings; you are swift and wise, praised and all-knowing. You are inspired, the poet; swift-footed and strong; helper, giver of good; purifier, subtle as a cat; sovereign, thin-flamed; the one to be surrounded, the purifying; the sky, the spreader; cleansed, destroyer of offerings; the abode of truth, the light of heaven. You are the ocean, all-pervading; the unborn, single-footed; the serpent of the deep; speech itself; Indra’s, the seat. You are the two doors of truth—let no harm come to me. Lord of paths, lead me safely; may I find welfare on this divine path. May you look upon me with Mitra’s eye. O fires, you are with the ocean, with Rudra and Anika. Protect me, preserve me, and guard me, O fires. I salute you—do not harm me. You are the light of all forms, gathered among the gods. Soma, you are the shield, protecting from harm to body and spirit. Svāhā. May the receiver of clarified butter be pleased. Svāhā. O Agni, lead us by the good path to prosperity, O knower of all ways; remove from us the crooked sin we have committed. To you, we offer abundant words of homage. May Agni create a wide passage for us, breaking through enemies, winning riches for the seeker, and, exultant, conquering foes. Svāhā. Stride widely, O Viṣṇu, make spacious room for our dwelling. O you born of ghee, drink the ghee; lead forth the lord of sacrifice. Svāhā. O god Savitar, this Soma is for you; protect it. O Soma, god among gods, I offer this for the increase of wealth, freed from Varuṇa’s bonds. Svāhā. O Agni, guardian of vows, may your vow-body be in me, and mine in you. As lord of vows, accept our vows as they are; may the lord of consecration accept my consecration, the lord of austerity my austerity. Stride widely, O Viṣṇu, make wide room for our dwelling. O you born of ghee, drink the ghee; lead forth the lord of sacrifice. Svāhā. I have not sought another, nor approached elsewhere; I have found you nearer than near, farther than the farthest. We choose you, O lord of the forest, for the divine sacrifice; may the gods accept you for Viṣṇu. O plant, protect us. O sacrificial post, do no harm. Do not injure sky or midspace; be united with the earth. For you, the sacrificial post, the sharpened blade has led forth for great good fortune. O lord of the forest, with a hundred branches, grow; with a thousand branches, may we grow. By Savitar’s impulse, the Aśvins’ arms, and Pūṣan’s hands, I place you. You are a woman; with this I cut off the necks of demons. You are barley, driving away hatred and foes. For sky, midspace, and earth, I place you. May the worlds and ancestral abodes be purified. You are the abode of the ancestors. You are the leader, the best of lifters; from this wealth you will stand forth. May Savitar anoint you with honey. Among the finest plants, you touch the sky with your tip, reach the midspace with your middle, and support the earth with your top. In your abodes, where the many-horned cows graze, there, O wide-striding Viṣṇu, is your highest step; protect it, O mighty one. I surround you for the strength of prayer, rule, and wealth. Establish prayer, rule, life, and offspring. Behold Viṣṇu’s deeds, from where sacred laws are revealed; he is the fitting friend of Indra. The wise always behold that highest step of Viṣṇu, like an eye stretched across the sky. You are the enclosing one; may the divine hosts surround you. May we surround the sacrificer with wealth among men. You are the son of heaven; this is your place on earth; the forest is your cattle. You are the one who approaches—approach the gods, the divine hosts, with the inspired ones, bearing the fire. O Tvaṣṭṛ, grant us wealth; may your offerings be pleasing. Rejoice, O Bṛhaspati, in abundance; hold the riches. With the noose of the gods’ offering, I release you to truth; let no harm come to you. By Savitar’s impulse, the Aśvins’ arms, and Pūṣan’s hands, consecrated by Agni and Soma, I place you. May the waters and plants accept you; may your mother, father, brother, those of the same womb, and companion accept you. I sprinkle you, consecrated by Agni and Soma. You are the broad one of the waters. May the divine waters enjoy their offering. May your breath join the wind, your limbs unite with the worshipful, and the lord of sacrifice unite you with blessing. Protect the sacrificial animals anointed with ghee; O Revati, bring delight to the sacrificer, enter here. From midspace, with the divine wind, offer this oblation with your essence; be whole. Let rain pour abundantly in the sacrifice; establish the lord of sacrifice. Svāhā to the gods. Do not harm the earth; do not injure it. With reverence, approach those who have gathered. Follow the streams of ghee along the righteous paths.
