With his radiant, all-seeing eye, the blazing Varuṇa surveys every person; none escapes his gaze. The divine priests approach, their chariot gleaming with the brilliance of the sun, and with sweet honey they anoint the sacred offering. These are the ancient priests, venerable and wise. Among the gods stands Vena, wondrous and marvelous, shining forth with unique splendor. May Viśvānara, the divine Savitṛ, arrive at our assembly, bringing the blessings of Iḍā. As young men delight in our presence, so may all the world turn toward us with favor and goodwill. O Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, whatever deeds you have accomplished today, O Sun, all of these are under your sovereign control. Swift and all-seeing, O Sun, you are the maker of light, illuminating the entire vastness of the world. Your divinity, O Sun, is truly great—your greatness stretches across the sky, and you have taken up your place in its midst. When you yoke your shining steeds and rise from your seat, night retreats, spreading her dark garment before you. For the sake of Mitra and Varuṇa, the Sun shapes his form in the lap of the heavens. One of his powers is endless and bright, another is dark; his chariot’s bays carry both together. O Sun, O Āditya, you are truly great—your greatness is celebrated and praised by all. You are resplendent in glory and mighty in power. By your greatness, you are the overlord and priest of the gods, the all-pervading, unfailing light. All people, as if yearning, gaze upon the Sun. All who are born with strength partake of Indra’s gifts, just as we share in a portion together. At the rising of the Sun today, O gods, release us from misfortune and blame. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven protect us from harm. Through the dark firmament moves Savitṛ, the god, establishing both the immortal and the mortal. He journeys through all the worlds in his golden chariot, seeing everything. The sacrificial grass is laid out for the gods, and as the lord of the people approaches his seat, at the first calling of dawn, Vāyu and Pūṣan arrive in their chariots, bringing well-being. We invoke Indra and Vāyu, Bṛhaspati, Mitra and Agni, Pūṣan, Bhaga, the Ādityas, and the host of Maruts. May Varuṇa be our protector, and Mitra grant us divine favor with all their blessings. Upon Indra, Viṣṇu and their kin, upon the Maruts and the Ashvins, upon the ancient ones and Vena, upon all these gods, may the honeyed Soma be enjoyed, O guardians of the people. Agni, Indra, Varuṇa, Mitra, all the gods and their hosts—Maruts, Viṣṇu, the Ashvins, Rudra, the goddesses, Pūṣan, Bhaga, and Sarasvatī—may they accept our offerings. We call upon Indra and Agni, Mitra and Varuṇa, Aditi, the heavens, earth, the Maruts, mountains, and waters; we invoke Viṣṇu, Pūṣan, Brahmanaspati, Bhaga, and Savitar for aid. May the mighty Rudras and the mountains, united in the slaying of Vṛtra and the sacred invocation, protect us; whoever praises and sings, let the gods led by Indra defend us. Come near today, O worshipful ones; with reverence I approach you in my heart. Protect us, O gods, from the wolf, from the doer of harm, O worshipful ones. May all the Maruts today, all the kindled fires, all the gods come to us with help; may we be blessed with all wealth and strength. All gods, hear my invocation—those in the midspace, those upon the heavens, those with Agni’s tongue, and all the worshipful—sit upon this sacrificial grass and rejoice. To the foremost gods, worthy of sacrifice, you grant immortality and the highest share. Savitar, you spread out the gift, granting life to mortals. To Vāyu I direct my lofty thought—for abundant wealth, universal protection, and mastery of chariots. The shining ones, the chariots, the poet—you, O worthy of worship, lead the poet. Indra and Vāyu, these pressed offerings are for you; come with favor, for the Soma streams delight you. I call Mitra, pure in wisdom, and Varuṇa, the righteous; they accomplish the clarified, luminous thought. O wondrous, youthful Ashvins, the pressed offerings are for you, set upon the well-prepared grass; come by the path of Rudra, along with the ancient ones and Vena. When Saramā found the broken path of the mountain, the great ancient way, who was her companion? She led the foremost, the well-footed of the words, and sang the first cry, knowing it. No one else knew the track except from Vaiśvānara, the ancient path of Agni; the immortals strengthened him, the undying Vaiśvānara, for the conquest of the realm, O gods. We invoke Indra and Agni, fierce and destroyers of foes; may they be gracious to us in this way. Let men sing to Indu, the purifier; they draw near to the gods. Those who strengthened you, O Maghavan, in the slaying, those in the battle of Śambara, O wielder of tawny steeds, those in the contest for the cows, and those priests who now approve you—drink, Indra, the Soma with the Maruts, your companions. Born mighty, fierce for strength and speed, delightful, most vigorous, full of pride—even the Maruts increased Indra here, when the mother placed the hero in the womb. Come to us, Indra, slayer of Vṛtra, come to our portion, great one, with mighty aids. You, Indra, are victorious in every contest; you destroy hostility and create universal victory; you overcome all who challenge you. The earths themselves follow your force, rushing like mothers after a child; all your adversaries you subdue in anger, when you, Indra, conquer Vṛtra. The sacrifice draws near to the favor of the gods; may the Ādityas be gracious and their benevolence turn toward us, granting the path and removing distress. Savitar, with unfailing guardians, protect our life today with auspicious ones; golden-tongued, bring us fresh prosperity and shield us from the words of evil speakers. The pure ones have streamed forth with vigor, with the priests, and the sweet Soma juices. Bring, Vāyu, your teams—come here and drink the pressed Soma for delight. The cows have come near, great givers of sacrificial riches, their ears shining with gold.
