Vāyu, the radiant and wise, moves among his hosts, adorned with resplendent glory. United in purpose, men stand dedicated to Vāyu, accomplishing deeds of greatness under his guidance. For the sake of wealth, the two worlds themselves have brought Vāyu into being; for wealth, the divine Dhiṣaṇā bestows her favor upon him. Thus, the hosts accompany Vāyu, and the brilliant Vasudhiti shines forth distinctly among them. In the beginning, the mighty waters, bearing all within themselves, held the embryo from which Agni was born. From these waters arose the one supreme Lord of the gods. In wonder, we ask: to which god shall we offer our oblation? Who, perceiving the greatness of the waters, recognized their skill in giving birth to sacrifice? Which among the gods stood above the rest? To whom shall we direct our offering? It is by the power of one who brings the hosts to the worshipper’s home, delighting Vāyu, that we ask for wealth—wealth that is easy to enjoy, heroic sons, cattle, horses, and generous gifts. We call upon Vāyu to approach our sacrifice with his countless hosts, hundreds and thousands strong, to partake in the offering. May Vāyu, radiant and splendid, rejoice in this pressing of Soma and ever protect us with his blessings. O Vāyu, leader of hosts, we approach you with reverence. Enter the house of the one who presses Soma; come as the foremost among those who delight in the sweet drink, accompanied by your retinue. Be pleased by our sacrifice, O Vāyu, and attend our offering with your auspicious hosts. With your thousand chariots, come to the Soma-pressing, bringing your company for the sacred drink. Whether with one, ten, with your own, with two for the offering, with twenty, with three, or with thirty hosts, O Vāyu, release your blessings here. O wondrous Vāyu, Lord of wind and son-in-law of Tvaṣṭṛ, we choose your favors. We praise you, heroic one, as cows praise their unmilked calf; you are the lord of all that moves and all that stands firm. O Indra, shining in heaven, there is none like you—neither among the celestial nor the earthly, none born nor yet to be born. O generous Indra, we call upon you, seeking horses, cattle, and wealth. We call you, O Indra, giver of strength, lord among slayers; men invoke you in the forests and among the horses. O mighty Indra, with dazzling thunderbolt in hand, courageous and praised, breaker of stones—scatter for us cows, horses, chariots, and wealth, so that none may overcome us. By what power did you become so wondrous, ever-strengthening, a true friend? By what potent aid were you chosen? Who among the true ones is most exhilarated by the sacred draughts, who delights in the pressed Soma? Even the firmest treasures are unlocked by him. May you, Indra, be our protector among friends, aiding us a hundredfold. Sacrifice after sacrifice, voice after voice, we praise Agni, the immortal Jātavedas, our dear friend, as one praises a beloved companion. Agni, guard us with your strength—once, twice, thrice, and fourfold—O giver of wealth. To the Offspring of Strength, the Bringer, we offer with devotion, that he may accept our oblation, protect us in contests, increase our fortune, and save our very selves. You, O Lord, are the year, the cycle, the half-year, the season, the month, the fortnight, the day and night, and the dawns; may all these be prepared for you. Let the year be readied for you. Having departed and returned, move together, move onward. You are even the Suparṇa; by the divine power of the Angiras, take your firm seat. Let the Hotṛ, the priest, invoke Samidha-Indra at the sacred place of Iḍā, at the navel of the earth. Let him blaze forth from the expanse of heaven, mighty and victorious among peoples. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke Tanūnapāt, unconquered victor, with his powers. Let him call Indra, knower of the light, who walks the sweetest paths, strong with the might of men. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke Indra, praised by Iḍā, immortal, called with the ladle—the mighty god among gods, wielder of the thunderbolt, destroyer of cities. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ call Indra to the sacred grass, to his seat as the bull among men; let him be accompanied by the Vasus, Rudras, and Ādityas, well-yoked. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke the vigor, strength, and might, the doors that have strengthened Indra; may the well-guided doors, grown with truth, open wide in this sacrifice for gracious Indra. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke the nourishing cows of Indra, the two great mothers, ever-yielding; like swift winds, may they nourish Indra as a calf. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke the divine Hotṛs, healers and friends, with offerings; may they heal Indra, granting him strength. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke the three goddesses, the healing, triple-born streams—Iḍā, Sarasvatī, and Bhāratī, the great ones, wives of Indra, rich in offerings. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke Tvaṣṭṛ, the god, Indra’s healer, well-sacrificing, shining with ghee, of many forms and good seed, generous in nature. May Tvaṣṭṛ grant Indra his powers. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke the Lord of the Forest, the pacifier, the hundred-powered, the enjoyer of thoughts, the strength; with honey and well-guided paths, may he sweeten the sacrifice with honey and ghee. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. Let the Hotṛ invoke Indra with svāhā of clarified butter, of fat, of drops, of svāhā-offerings, of hymns of offering; may the gods, drinkers of clarified butter, be pleased. Let Indra accept the clarified butter. O Hotṛ, offer the clarified butter. The gods spread the sacred grass for Indra, the excellent god, with the other gods, rich in heroes, upon the altar; they increased him. Chosen and supported by wealth, the grass, abounding in riches, reached beyond for the possessor of wealth; let the sacrificer seek the wealth of the wealthy. The divine doors, together with the gods, increased Indra in the assembly as he advanced with heroic men. With the calf, the young one, and the boy, let them drive away all defilement; let the sacrificer seek the wealth of the wealthy. The divine dawns and nights called Indra to the sacrifice as he approached. The divine peoples led the way, well-pleased and well-offered; let the sacrificer seek the wealth of the wealthy. The divine enjoyer, bestower of wealth, increased Indra. One drives away hatreds, another brings forth desirable wealth for the instructed sacrificer; let the sacrificer seek the wealth of the wealthy. The divine givers of nourishment, pouring forth milk, increased Indra. One brings forth food and strength, another abundance and fullness; the new one gives first, the old one gives the new, both granting strength and nourishment for the instructed sacrificer; let the sacrificer seek the wealth of the wealthy. The divine priests, together with the goddess, increased Indra. Let haters and slanderers be struck down; for the instructed sacrificer, let him seek the wealth of the wealthy.
