With wisdom, skill, and radiant vision, I unite myself with the goddess, longing to remain ever in her presence. “Do not take away my life, my very self, or my belonging to you,” I pray. “Let me behold your heroic one, O goddess, while I stand before you.” Turning to the sacred meters, I offer their shares to Soma: “Let this be your portion of the Gāyatrī, O Soma; let this be your portion of the Triṣṭubh; let this be your portion of the Jagatī. May sovereignty over all meters be yours, O Soma, for you are ours, your brilliance to be sought by the skilled and the wise.” I sing praises to Savitṛ, the wise, the true, the treasurer of riches, beloved and inspired sage. His exalted thought shines forth; his radiance, measured and golden-handed, reveals his skill and compassion. For the sake of offspring, may they breathe after you, and you after them. With brightness, I purchase the bright one; with the moon, the moon; with immortality, the immortal. Your cow is united, your moons are with us. You are the very form of austerity, bearing the hue of Prajāpati, and are won with the supreme beast. May I nurture a thousandfold abundance. Mitra, come to us as a true friend. Enter Indra’s vast domain, O radiant, gentle, and pleasant one. O fire, shining and flaming, skillful and dexterous, these Soma-purchasers are yours—protect them, let no harm come to you. Agni, drive away evil conduct from me; have no part in what is good. Rise up, filled with life, with your own immortal essence. Let us discover the path to well-being, free from harm, where all adversaries are kept at bay and wealth is gained. You are the skin of the Adityas; remain ever with them. The mighty bull upheld the sky, measured the breadth of the atmosphere and earth, and the sovereign sat among all worlds—these are the ordinances of Varuṇa. He stretched the atmosphere through the forests, placed strength among horses, milk among cows, resolve in hearts, fire in villages, the sun in the sky, and Soma in the mountains. Rise to the eye of the sun, to the pupil of Agni’s eye, journeying with these, shining and wise. Let the two oxen be yoked, without tears or weariness, inspired by sacred knowledge. May they go to the sacrificer’s house for well-being. You are auspicious to me; move forth, O Lord of Speech, to all abodes. May neither those who encircle you nor those who block you, nor wolves nor evil-doers, know you. Become a hawk and fly away; go to the sacrificer’s house. This is our accomplishment. Homage to the eye of Mitra and Varuṇa, to the great god; worship that truth. Praise the far-seeing, god-born sign, the son of heaven, Sūrya. You are the support, the pillar, and the seat of truth for Varuṇa. Sit always in the seat of truth for Varuṇa. May all your worshipped abodes surround you, O Soma. Be broad-backed, the crossing, the strong, the destroyer of the weak—move forth through difficult places. You are the body of Agni for Viṣṇu; the body of Soma for Viṣṇu; the hospitality for the guest for Viṣṇu. I appoint you for the eagle, the bearer of Soma, for Viṣṇu; for Agni, for increasing wealth, for Viṣṇu. You are the origin of Agni, the two vigorous ones, Urvaśī, life itself, Purūravas. With the Gāyatrī, Triṣṭubh, and Jagatī meters, I churn you. May you both be of one mind for us, conscious and unstained. O Jātavedas, do not harm the sacrifice or its lord; may you both be auspicious for us today. Within Agni, Agni moves, the son of seers, protector from curses; may he be gentle to us, well-invoked at this sacrifice, carrying the oblation to the gods unfailingly. Svāhā. For approach, for surrounding, for the body’s guardian, for Śākvara, the most powerful, I take you—invincible, unconquered among the gods, strength unassailable, protector from curses. May I attain the true path; do not place me among the pale ones. O Agni, guardian of vows, this body of yours is mine and this body of mine is yours. Together, O lord of vows, let us follow the vows. Let the lord of consecration acknowledge my consecration, and the lord of austerity my austerity. May the divine, well-dropped Soma increase for Indra, sole possessor of wealth; may Indra increase for you, and you for Indra. May you increase us and our companions together with wisdom and well-being. O divine Soma, be sweet in the pressing; may desired wealth be sent for distribution, for fortune, for truth, for those who speak truth. Homage to Heaven and Earth. That body of yours, O Agni, which lies in iron—the greatest, the deepest—may fierce and sharp speech be driven away. Svāhā. That body of yours in the atmosphere—the greatest, the deepest—may fierce and sharp speech be driven away. Svāhā. That body of yours in the gold—the greatest, the deepest—may fierce and sharp speech be driven away. Svāhā. You are heated, you are known; may you protect me from abandonment and distress. Agni knows the name Nabhas; O Agni, descendant of Aṅgiras, come as Āyu; wherever you are on this earth, with whatever unconquered sacrificial name, with that I establish you. On the second earth, on the third earth, with whatever unconquered sacrificial name, with that I establish you. I follow you for the gods’ favor. You are a lioness, subduer of rivals; be fit, purify, and shine for the gods. May Indra’s voice with the Vasus protect you before; Pracetas with the Rudras behind; Manojava with the Fathers to the right; Viśvakarman with the Ādityas to the left. I pour out this heated water, removing it from the sacrifice. You are a lioness. Svāhā. The protection of the Ādityas. Svāhā. The protection of Brahman and Kṣatra. Svāhā. Bringer of good offspring, protection of wealth and prosperity. Svāhā. Bring the gods to the sacrificer. Svāhā. I appoint you for beings. You are firm; make the earth firm. You are well established; make the atmosphere firm. You are unshaken; make the heaven firm. You are the moisture of Agni. The wise ones yoke the mind and thoughts; the two Hotṛs, knowing the rites, I appoint. This great praise of Savitṛ I recite. Svāhā. Viṣṇu has measured out this world, establishing the threefold step; his dust pervades all. Svāhā. May she be rich in refreshment, cows, and good things, granting favor to Manu. Viṣṇu, with his rays, supports both worlds, holding the earth all around. Svāhā. Let your divine voices, O gods, resound among the gods; go eastward, preparing the sacrifice, leading the offering upward. Do not falter with your tongues, but speak of your own abode in the difficult place. Do not cut off our life or offspring; may you dwell here on earth. Now I proclaim the mighty deeds of Viṣṇu, who measured out the regions of earth and established the upper abode without support, striding widely three times for the mighty. O Viṣṇu, whether from sky, earth, or the vastness between, fill both hands with riches and grant them from right and left. For Viṣṇu, I dedicate you. Viṣṇu is praised for his strength, fierce as a wild beast roaming the mountains; in his three strides all worlds dwell. You are the delight, offspring, bond, and steadfastness of Viṣṇu; you are his, and I dedicate you to Viṣṇu. I place you through the impulse of divine Savitar, with the arms of the Ashvins and hands of Pushan. You are a woman; here, I cut the necks of the demons. You are great and swift; speak a mighty word for Indra. O destroyer of demons and obstacles, of Viṣṇu: I cast away every obstacle—whether set by enemy or rival, equal or unequal, kin or stranger, born or unborn. I cast away all sorcery. You are lord of heaven and slayer of rivals; lord of sacrifice and destroyer of adversaries; lord of people and destroyer of demons; lord of all and slayer of enemies. I sprinkle, lead down, spread out, place, and carry you—destroyer of demons and obstacles, belonging to Viṣṇu. You are Viṣṇu’s, and ever remain of Viṣṇu.
