This is your sacred, worshipful body. I set free the waters, but not the offspring. O you who remove sin, invoked by Svāhā, enter the earth and be born from her. Agni, vigilant guardian, may you keep watch over us; may we be filled with vigor under your protection. O unsleeping one, awaken us again and again. May my mind and my life return; may my breath and very self come back to me. Let my sight and hearing be restored. O Vaiśvānara Agni, unassailable and protector of this body, guard us from misfortune and harm. Among gods and mortals, you, Agni, are the guardian of vows, ever worthy of praise in sacrifice. May the god Savitṛ, bestower of wealth, grant us what we desire. This is your radiant form, this is your brilliance—become one with it and go forth shining. You have been chosen with devoted mind for Viṣṇu. By the impulse of that true, mighty one, may I enter into the mechanism of your being—Svāhā. You are brightness, you are the moon, you are immortal, you are the Vaiśvadeva. You are consciousness itself, you are mind, you are wise and skilled, a warrior, fit for sacrifice. You are Aditi, the boundless, and two-headed. May you grow auspiciously in the east and west. May Mitra bind you to the path, Pūṣan protect you on the road, and Indra oversee your journey. May your mother, father, brother, womb-mate, companion, and herd-mate accept and approve you. O goddess, go to the gods; may Rudra guide you to Indra and Soma for your well-being. Friend of Soma, return. You are Vasvi, you are Aditi, you are Aditya, you are Rudra, you are Chandra. May Bṛhaspati delight you with his favor; may Rudra approach you with the Vasus. O Adityas, in the divine sacrifice I touch your head; you are the ghee-filled step of the earth and Iḍā. Dwell among us—you are our kin, our wealth is in you. May we not lose this wealth; that is true wealth. With wisdom, skill, and shining vision I join with the goddess. Do not take away my life, my self, or my belonging to you. May I see your hero, O goddess, in your presence. Let this be your share of the Gāyatrī, so say to Soma; let this be your share of the Triṣṭubh, so say to Soma; let this be your share of the Jagatī, so say to Soma. Let sovereignty over the meters be attained, so say to Soma. You are ours, your brilliance is to be seized; let the skilled ones seek you out. I praise the god Savitṛ, wise, true, holder of treasures, beloved, inspired sage. His lofty thought shines forth; his radiance is measured by Savitṛ, the golden-handed, skillful, merciful, and heavenly. For the sake of offspring, let them breathe after you, and you after them. I purchase you, the bright one, with brightness; the moon with the moon, the immortal with immortality. Your cow is united, your moons are with us. You are the body of austerity, the color of Prajāpati, purchased with the supreme beast. May I nourish a thousandfold abundance. Come to us, Mitra, as a good friend. Enter Indra’s wide space, O radiant, gentle, and pleasant one. O shining, flaming, dexterous-handed, well-handed fire, here are your Soma-purchasers—protect them; let none harm you. Agni, drive away evil conduct from me; do not share in good conduct. Rise up with life, with your own life, with immortality. Let us find the path to well-being, free from harm, by which all foes are warded off and wealth is gained. You are the skin of the Adityas. Sit always with them. The bull propped up the sky, measured the expanse of the atmosphere, and the breadth of the earth. The sovereign sits among all worlds; these are the ordinances of Varuṇa. He stretched the atmosphere in the forests, strength among horses, milk among cows. In hearts, Varuṇa placed resolve; among villages, fire; in the sky, the sun; in the mountains, Soma. Ascend to the eye of the sun, to the pupil of Agni’s eye, where you journey with these, shining and wise. Let the two oxen be yoked, without tears, unwearied, inspired by sacred knowledge. May they go to the house of the sacrificer for well-being. You are auspicious to me; move forth, O Lord of Speech, to all abodes. May neither those who encircle you nor those who block you nor wolves nor evil-doers know you. Become a hawk and fly away; go to the house of the sacrificer. That is our accomplishment. Homage to the eye of Mitra and Varuṇa, to the great god; worship that truth. Praise the far-seeing, god-born sign, the son of heaven, Sūrya. You are the support and pillar-foundation of Varuṇa. You are the seat of truth for Varuṇa. Sit in the seat of truth for Varuṇa. May all your abodes, worshipped with oblation, encompass you entirely; may you, Soma, be the broad-backed, the crossing, the strong, the destroyer of the weak, moving among the difficult places. You are the body of Agni for Viṣṇu; you are the body of Soma for Viṣṇu; you are the hospitality for the guest for Viṣṇu. I appoint you for the eagle, the bearer of Soma, for Viṣṇu; I appoint you for Agni, for the increase of wealth, for Viṣṇu. You are the origin of Agni; you are the two vigorous ones; you are Urvaśī; you are life; you are Purūravas. With the Gāyatrī metre I churn you; with the Triṣṭubh metre I churn you; with the Jagatī metre I churn you. May you both be of one mind for us, conscious and unstained; do not harm the sacrifice, nor the lord of the sacrifice, O Jātavedas; may you both be auspicious for us today. Within Agni, Agni moves, having entered, the son of seers, protector from curses; may he be gentle to us, well-invoked at this sacrifice; may he carry the oblation to the gods without fail. Svāhā. For approach, for surrounding, for the guardian of the body, for Śākvara, for the most powerful, I take you; invincible, unconquered among the gods, strength, unassailable, protector from curses, not to be cursed, may I attain the true path; do not place me among the pale ones. O Agni, you are the guardian of vows; this body of yours is mine, and mine is yours; together, O lord of vows, may we follow the vows. Let the lord of consecration acknowledge my consecration; let the lord of austerity acknowledge my austerity. May the drop, the well-dropped, the divine Soma, increase for Indra, the sole possessor of wealth; may Indra increase for you, may you increase for Indra; may you increase us, our companions, together with wisdom and well-being. O divine Soma, may you be sweet in the pressing; may desired wealth be sent for distribution, for good fortune, for truth, for those who speak truth. Homage to Heaven and Earth. That body of yours, Agni, which lies in the iron, the greatest, the deepest—may fierce and sharp speech be driven away. Svāhā. That body of yours, Agni, in the atmosphere, the greatest, the deepest—may fierce and sharp speech be driven away. Svāhā. That body of yours, Agni, in the gold, the greatest, the deepest—may fierce and sharp speech be driven away. Svāhā. You are heated, you are known; may you protect me from abandonment and distress. Agni knows the name Nabhas; O Agni, descendant of Aṅgiras, come with the name Āyu. Whoever you are on this earth, whatever unconquered, sacrificial name you have, with that I establish you. Likewise, on the second and third earths, with whatever unconquered, sacrificial name you have, with that I establish you. I follow you for the favor of the gods. You are a lioness, subduer of rivals; be fit for the gods. You are a lioness, subduer of rivals; purify for the gods. You are a lioness, subduer of rivals; shine for the gods. May Indra’s voice, with the Vasus, protect you in front; may Pracetas, with the Rudras, protect you behind; may Manojava, with the Fathers, protect you on the right; may Viśvakarman, with the Ādityas, protect you on the left. This heated water I pour out, removing it from the sacrifice. You are a lioness. Svāhā. You are a lioness, the protection of the Ādityas. Svāhā. You are a lioness, the protection of the Brahman and the Kṣatra. Svāhā. You are a lioness, the bringer of good offspring, the protection of wealth and prosperity. Svāhā. You are a lioness; bring the gods to the sacrificer. Svāhā. I appoint you for the beings. You are firm; make the earth firm. You are firmly established; make the atmosphere firm. You are unshaken; make the heaven firm. You are the moisture of Agni. The wise, the great, the all-knowing yoke the mind and thoughts; the two Hotṛs, knowing the rites, I appoint; this great praise of the god Savitṛ I recite. Svāhā. Viṣṇu has measured out this world; he established the threefold step; his dust is all-pervading. Svāhā.
