ततो विराडजायत विराजो अधि पूरुषः स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्भूमिमथो पुरः
From him was born Virāj, and from Virāj, the Purusha. Once born, he extended beyond, behind the earth and in front.
मन्ये वां द्यावापृथिवी सुभोजसौ ये अप्रथेथाममितमभि योजनम् द्यावापृथिवी भवतं स्योने ते नो मुञ्चतमंहसः
I consider you, Heaven and Earth, to be bountiful, who have spread out boundlessly, joined together. Heaven and Earth, be firm for us; release us from sin.
हरी त इन्द्र श्मश्रूण्युतो ते हरितौ हरि तं त्वा स्तुवन्ति कवयः पुरुषासो वनर्गवः
O Indra, tawny are your beards, and your steeds are tawny. The poets, the men, the singers praise you, O tawny one.
यद्वर्चो हिरण्यस्य यद्वा वर्चो गवामुत सत्यस्य ब्रह्मणो वर्चस्तेन मा सं सृजामसि
Whatever radiance is of gold, or the radiance of cows, or the radiance of truth and sacred utterance, with that radiance may we be united.
सहस्तन्न इन्द्र दद्ध्योज ईशे ह्यस्य महतो विरप्शिन् क्रतुं न नृम्णं स्थविरं च वाजं वृत्रेषु शत्रून्त्सुहना कृधी नः
With that strength, O Indra, grant us power; you are the lord of this great might, wide-seeing. Grant us wisdom, manliness, enduring strength; in battles, make us slayers of foes.
सहर्षभाः सहवत्सा उदेत विश्वा रूपाणी बिभ्रतीर्द्व्यूद्नीः उरुः पृथुरयं वो अस्तु लोक इमा आपः सुप्रपाणा इह स्त
With strong bulls and strong calves, rise up, bearing all forms, O two divine cows. May this wide, broad world be yours; these waters, well-guarded, are here for you.
अग्न आयूंषि पवस आसुवोर्जमिषं च नः आरे बाधस्व दुच्छुनाम्
O Agni, purify our lives, bestow quick strength and food upon us; drive far away the evil-minded.
विभ्राङ्बृहत्पिबतु सोम्यं मध्वायुर्दधद्यज्ञपतावविह्रुतम् वातजूतो यो अभिरक्षति त्मना प्रजाः पिपर्ति बहुधा वि राजति
Let the radiant one drink the great Soma, bearing life and delight for the lord of sacrifice. He who, driven by wind, protects by his own power, nourishes the offspring, and shines in many ways.
चित्रं देवानामुदगादनीकं चक्षुर्मित्रस्य वरुणस्याग्नेः आप्रा द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च
A wondrous form of the gods has arisen—the eye of Mitra, Varuna, and Agni. It has filled heaven, earth, and the midspace; the sun is the soul of all that moves and stands.
आयं गौः पृश्निरक्रमीदसदन्मातरं पुरः पितरं च प्रयन्त्स्वः
This spotted cow has stepped forth; she settled before her mother, and approached her father, longing for the dawn.
अन्तश्चरति रोचनास्य प्राणादपानती व्यख्यन्महिषो दिवम्
He moves within, shining, drawing in breath and sending it forth; the great buffalo has revealed the heavens.
त्रिंषद्धाम वि राजति वाक्पतङ्गाय धीयते प्रति वस्तोरह द्युभिः
In thirty abodes he radiates; speech is set for the swift-winged one, in every place, with the luminous ones.
अप त्ये तायवो यथा नक्षत्रा यन्त्यक्तुभिः सूराय विश्वचक्षसे
As birds fly away, so these rays depart; like stars with the nights, they go to the sun, the all-seeing one.
अदृश्रन्नस्य केतवो वि रश्मयो जनां अनु भ्राजन्तो अग्नयो यथा
His signs are unseen, his rays spread out among the people, shining like fires.
तरणिर्विश्वदर्शतो ज्योतिष्कृदसि सूर्य विश्वमाभासि रोचनम्
You are the swift one, all-seeing, maker of light, O Sun; you illumine all the shining realms.
प्रत्यङ् देवानां विशः प्रत्यङ्ङुदेषि मानुषान् प्रत्यङ् विश्वं स्वर्दृशे
You turn back the hosts of the gods, you turn back the hosts of men, you turn back all the world for the seeing of the sun.
येना पावक चक्षसा भुरण्यन्तं जनां अनु त्वं वरुण पश्यसि
With this pure vision, O Varuṇa, you behold all people as they move about.
उद्द्यामेषि रजः पृथ्वहा मिमानो अक्तुभिः पश्यञ्जन्मानि सूर्य
You rise, measuring the wide expanse of the sky with your rays, observing the births, O Sun.
अयुक्त सप्त शुन्ध्युवः सूरो रथस्य नप्त्र्यः ताभिर्याति स्वयुक्तिभिः
The sun has yoked seven swift mares, daughters of the chariot; with these, self-yoked, he journeys.
सप्त त्वा हरितो रथे वहन्ति देव सूर्य शोचिष्केशं विचक्षण
Seven bright ones carry you in the chariot, O god Sun, with flaming hair, all-seeing.
इत्यारण्यं पर्व .. महानाम्न्य विदा मघवन् विदा गातुमनुशंसिषो दिशः शिक्षा शचीनां पते पूर्वीणां पुरूवसो
Thus to the forested mountain... to the great ones, know, O bountiful one, know the path of praise; direct the powers, Lord of strength, of the former, O much-desiring one.
आभिष्ट्वमभिष्टिभिः स्वा ऽर्न्नांशुः प्रचेतन प्रचेतयेन्द्र द्युम्नाय न इषे
With these, for you, with blessings, with sweet food, the radiant one, the wise one, Indra, is made aware for strength, not for want.
एवा हि शक्रो राये वाजाय वज्रिवः शविष्ठ वज्रिन्नृञ्जसे मंहिष्ठ वज्रिन्नृञ्जस आ याहि पिब मत्स्व
Thus indeed, O Śakra, for wealth, for vigor, O wielder of the bolt, most mighty, come, drink, rejoice, O wielder of the bolt, most generous to men.
विदा राये सुवीर्यं भवो वाजानां पतिर्वशां अनु मंहिष्ठ वज्रिन्नृञ्जसे यः शविष्ठः शूराणाम्
Know, for wealth, the good heroism; be lord of vigor, master of riches, most generous to men, most mighty among the strong.
यो मंहिष्ठो मघोनाम्ंशुर्न्न शोचिः चिकित्वो अभि नो नयेंद्रो विदे तमु स्तुहि
He who is most generous among the bountiful, like the sun in brightness, wise, may Indra lead us; praise him who knows.
ईशे हि शक्रस्तमूतये हवामहे जेतारमपराजितम् स नः स्वर्षदति द्विषः ऋतं बृहत्
For he, Śakra, is master of that strength; we call upon the unconquered victor. May he scatter our haters, the great, the true.
इन्द्रं धनस्य सातये हवामहे जेतारमपराजितम् स नः स्वर्षदति द्विषः स नः स्वर्षदति द्विषः
We call upon Indra for the gaining of wealth, the unconquered victor. May he scatter our haters, may he scatter our haters.
पूर्वस्य यत्ते अद्रिवों ऽशुर्मदाय सुम्न आ धेहि नो वसो पूर्तिः शविष्ठ शस्यते वशी हि शक्रो नूनं तन्नव्यं संन्यसे
For your former pressed Soma, O stone-armed one, for exhilaration, place your favor upon us, O gracious one. Fulfillment is praised, most mighty; truly, Śakra, you now take up this new gift.
प्रभो जनस्य वृत्रहन्त्समर्येषु ब्रवावहै शूरो यो गोषु गच्छति सखा सुशेवो अद्वयुः
O Lord, let us speak of the hero who, as the slayer of Vṛtra, moves among men, who goes among the cows, a friend, gracious, without enmity.
अथ पञ्च पुरीषपदानि एवाह्यो ऽ ऽ ऽवा एवा ह्यग्ने एवाहीन्द्र एवा हि पूषन् एवा हि देवाः ॐ एवाहि देवाः
Now, the five purīṣa-steps: indeed, O Agni; indeed, O Indra; indeed, O Pūṣan; indeed, O gods. Om, indeed, O gods.
