मयि वर्चो अथो यशो ऽथो यज्ञस्य यत्पयः परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिर्दिवि द्यामिव दृंहतु

May radiance be in me, and also fame, and also the essence of sacrifice; may Prajāpati, the supreme, establish it in heaven as he does the sky.

सं ते पयांसि समु यन्तु वाजाः सं वृष्ण्यान्यभिमातिषाहः आप्यायमानो अमृताय सोम दिवि श्रवांस्युत्तमानि धिष्व

May your nourishing powers come together, may the prizes unite, may the strengths that overcome opposition join. Soma, being enriched for immortality, place the highest fame in heaven.

त्वमिमा ओषधीः सोम विश्वास्त्वमपो अजनयस्त्वं गाः त्वमातनोरुर्वान्तरिक्षं त्वं ज्योतिषा वि तमो ववर्थ

You, Soma, created all these plants, you created the waters, you created the cows. You expanded the wide atmosphere from your body; with your light, you drove away the darkness.

अग्निमीडे पुरोहितं यज्ञस्य देवमृत्विजम् होतारं रत्नधातमम्

I praise Agni, the priest, the god of the sacrifice, the officiant, the bestower of treasures.

ते मन्वत प्रथमं नाम गोनां त्रिः सप्त परमं नाम जनान् ता जानतीरभ्यनूषत क्षा आविर्भुवन्नरुणीर्यशसा गावः

They considered the first name of the cows, thrice seven, the highest name of the peoples. Those knowing them followed after; the reddish, famous cows appeared on the earth.

समन्या यन्त्युपयन्त्यन्याः समानमूर्वं नद्यस्पृणन्ति तमू शुचिं शुचयो दीदिवांसमपान्नपातमुप यन्त्यापः

Some go together, others come together; the rivers touch the same expanse. The pure ones, shining, approach the pure, shining, food-bearing waters.

आ प्रागाद्भद्रा युवतिरह्नः केतून्त्समीर्त्सति अभूद्भद्रा निवेशनी विश्वस्य जगतो रात्री

The auspicious young woman of the day arose from the east, her signs spread. The auspicious resting place appeared; Night of the whole moving world.

प्रक्षस्य वृष्णो अरुषस्य नू महः प्र नो वचो विदथा जातवेदसे वैश्वानराय मतिर्नव्यसे शुचिः सोम इव पवते चारुरग्नये

Now let us praise the greatness of the bull, the red one. Let our speech go forth to Jātavedas in the assembly, to Vaiśvānara, to the fresh-minded one. Pure, like Soma when purified, beautiful for Agni.

विश्वे देवा मम शृण्वन्तु यज्ञमुभे रोदसी अपां नपाच्च मन्म मा वो वचांसि परिचक्ष्याणि वोचं सुम्नेष्विद्वो अन्तमा मदेम

May all the gods hear my sacrifice, both heaven and earth, and the son of the waters. May my words not be scattered among you; may I speak them in your favor, may we rejoice at the end.

यशो मा द्यावापृथिवी यशो मेन्द्रबृहस्पती यशो भगस्य विन्दतु यशो मा प्रतिमुच्यताम् यशस्व्यास्याः सं सदो ऽहं प्रवदिता स्याम्

May fame be mine from heaven and earth, may fame be mine from Indra and Bṛhaspati, may fame be gained from Bhaga, may fame be released for me. May I be the speaker of the assembly of the famous ones.

इन्द्रस्य नु वीर्याणि प्रवोचं यानि चकार प्रथमानि वज्री अहन्नहिमन्वपस्ततर्द प्र वक्षणा अभिनत्पर्वतानाम्

Now I shall proclaim the heroic deeds of Indra, which he first accomplished as the wielder of the thunderbolt. He slew the serpent, split open the waters, and struck the sides, he smashed the mountains.

अग्निरस्मि जन्मना जातवेदा घृतं मे चक्षुरमृतं म आसन् त्रिधातुरर्को रजसो विमानो ऽजस्रं ज्योतिर्हविरस्मि सर्वम्

I am Agni by birth, the Knower of all beings; clarified butter is my sight, immortality my food. I am the threefold supporter, the sun, the traverser of the firmament, the unceasing light, the offering, and the all.

पात्यग्निर्विपो अग्रं पदं वेः पाति यह्वश्चरणं सूर्यस्य पाति नाभा सप्तशीर्षाणमग्निः

Agni protects the foremost step of the wise; he guards the swift foot of the sun; at the navel, Agni with seven heads preserves.

भ्राजन्त्यग्ने समिधान दीदिवो जिह्वा चरत्यन्तरासनि स त्वं नो अग्ने पयसा वसुविद्रयिं वर्चो दृशे ऽदाः

Shining Agni, when kindled, blazes forth; his tongue moves within, as a spark. You, Agni, grant us wealth with nourishment, brilliance, and vision.

वसन्त इन्नु रन्त्यो ग्रीष्म इन्नु रन्त्यः वर्षाण्यनु शरदो हेमन्तः शिशिर इन्नु रन्त्यः

Spring is here, delightful; summer is here, delightful; the rains follow, then autumn, winter, and the cool season, all are delightful.

सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् स भूमिं सर्वतो वृत्वात्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम्

The Purusha has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet; having pervaded the earth on all sides, he stood above it by ten fingers' breadth.

त्रिपादूर्ध्व उदैत्पुरुषः पदो ऽस्येहाभवत्पुनः तथा विष्वङ् व्यक्रामदशनानशने अभि

Three quarters of the Purusha rose upward; one quarter was born again here. He spread everywhere, into what eats and what does not eat.

पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद्भूतं यच्च भाव्यम् पादो ऽस्य सर्वा भूतानि त्रिपादस्यामृतं दिवि

This all is indeed the Purusha—whatever has been and whatever will be. All beings are a quarter of him; three quarters, immortal, are in heaven.

तावानस्य महिमा ततो ज्यायांश्च पूरुषः उतामृतत्वस्येशानो यदन्नेनातिरोहति

Such is his greatness, and the Purusha is greater still. He is the lord of immortality, who grows beyond by food.

ततो विराडजायत विराजो अधि पूरुषः स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्भूमिमथो पुरः

From him was born Virāj, and from Virāj, the Purusha. Once born, he extended beyond, behind the earth and in front.

मन्ये वां द्यावापृथिवी सुभोजसौ ये अप्रथेथाममितमभि योजनम् द्यावापृथिवी भवतं स्योने ते नो मुञ्चतमंहसः

I consider you, Heaven and Earth, to be bountiful, who have spread out boundlessly, joined together. Heaven and Earth, be firm for us; release us from sin.

हरी त इन्द्र श्मश्रूण्युतो ते हरितौ हरि तं त्वा स्तुवन्ति कवयः पुरुषासो वनर्गवः

O Indra, tawny are your beards, and your steeds are tawny. The poets, the men, the singers praise you, O tawny one.

यद्वर्चो हिरण्यस्य यद्वा वर्चो गवामुत सत्यस्य ब्रह्मणो वर्चस्तेन मा सं सृजामसि

Whatever radiance is of gold, or the radiance of cows, or the radiance of truth and sacred utterance, with that radiance may we be united.

सहस्तन्न इन्द्र दद्ध्योज ईशे ह्यस्य महतो विरप्शिन् क्रतुं न नृम्णं स्थविरं च वाजं वृत्रेषु शत्रून्त्सुहना कृधी नः

With that strength, O Indra, grant us power; you are the lord of this great might, wide-seeing. Grant us wisdom, manliness, enduring strength; in battles, make us slayers of foes.

सहर्षभाः सहवत्सा उदेत विश्वा रूपाणी बिभ्रतीर्द्व्यूद्नीः उरुः पृथुरयं वो अस्तु लोक इमा आपः सुप्रपाणा इह स्त

With strong bulls and strong calves, rise up, bearing all forms, O two divine cows. May this wide, broad world be yours; these waters, well-guarded, are here for you.

अग्न आयूंषि पवस आसुवोर्जमिषं च नः आरे बाधस्व दुच्छुनाम्

O Agni, purify our lives, bestow quick strength and food upon us; drive far away the evil-minded.

विभ्राङ्बृहत्पिबतु सोम्यं मध्वायुर्दधद्यज्ञपतावविह्रुतम् वातजूतो यो अभिरक्षति त्मना प्रजाः पिपर्ति बहुधा वि राजति

Let the radiant one drink the great Soma, bearing life and delight for the lord of sacrifice. He who, driven by wind, protects by his own power, nourishes the offspring, and shines in many ways.

चित्रं देवानामुदगादनीकं चक्षुर्मित्रस्य वरुणस्याग्नेः आप्रा द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरिक्षं सूर्य आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च

A wondrous form of the gods has arisen—the eye of Mitra, Varuna, and Agni. It has filled heaven, earth, and the midspace; the sun is the soul of all that moves and stands.

आयं गौः पृश्निरक्रमीदसदन्मातरं पुरः पितरं च प्रयन्त्स्वः

This spotted cow has stepped forth; she settled before her mother, and approached her father, longing for the dawn.
