त्वमग्ने गृहपतिस्त्वं होता नो अध्वरे त्वं पोता विश्ववार प्रचेता ताक्षि यासि च वार्यम्
You, Agni, are the house-lord, you are our priest at the sacrifice, you are the carrier, all-knowing, you fashion and bring the desired reward.
सखायस्त्वा ववृमहे देवं मर्तास ऊतये अपां नपातं सुभगं सुदंससं सुप्रतूर्तिमनेहसम्
As friends, we mortals have chosen you, O god, for help—O offspring of the waters, fortunate, wise, well-praised, free from sin.
आ जुहोता हविषा मर्जयध्वं नि होतारं गृहपतिं दधिध्वम् इडस्पदे नमसा रातहव्यं सपर्यता यजतं पस्त्यानाम्
Offer and purify with oblation; set the priest, the house-lord, in his place; in the seat of Iḍā, with reverence, worship the worthy receiver of offerings, the honored one of the dwellings.
चित्र इच्छिशोस्तरुणस्य वक्षथो न यो मातरावन्वेति धातवे अनूधा यदजीजनदधा चिदा ववक्षत्सद्यो महि दूत्यां चरन्
Bright indeed is the breast of the youthful one, who, following his mothers, goes for support; when he was born, he did not delay—he at once desired to perform his great duty.
इदं त एकं पर ऊ त एकं तृतीयेन ज्योतिषा सं विशस्व संवेशनस्तन्वे चारुरेधि प्रियो देवानां परमे जनित्रे
This is your one form, that is your other; with a third light, enter and pervade; become lovely in body and form, beloved of the gods in the highest birthplace.
इमं स्तोममर्हते जातवेदसे रथमिव सं महेमा मनीषया भद्रा हि नः प्रमतिरस्य संसद्यग्ने सख्ये मा रिषामा वयं तव
To the worthy Jātavedas we offer this praise, as with a chariot, with our thought; for our assembly, Agni, may your favor be auspicious—may we not be separated from your friendship.
मूर्धानं दिवो अरतिं पृथिव्या वैश्वानरमृत आ जातमग्निम् कविं सम्राजमतिथिं जनानामासन्नाः पात्रं जनयन्त देवाः
The gods generated Agni, the universal one, the guest of the peoples, the seer, the sovereign, the head of heaven, the support of earth, born from the cosmic order, near to the vessel.
वि त्वदापो न पर्वतस्य पृष्ठादुक्थेभिरग्ने जनयन्त देवाः तं त्वा गिरः सुष्टुतयो वाजयन्त्याजिं न गिर्ववाहो जिग्युरश्वाः
From you, the waters spread out, as from the summit of a mountain; with hymns, O Agni, the gods generated you; to you, the songs, well-praised, bring strength, as victorious horses win the prize in battle.
आ वो राजानमध्वरस्य रुद्रं होतारं सत्ययजं रोदस्योः अग्निं पुरा तनयित्नोरचित्ताद्धिरण्यरूपमवसे कृणुध्वम्
To you, make Agni, the king of the sacrifice, Rudra, the true-offering priest of earth and heaven, the ancient one, the golden-formed, ready for help, before the thunderer's thoughtless act.
इन्धे राजा समर्यो नमोभिर्यस्य प्रतीकमाहुतं घृतेन नरो हव्येभिरीडते सबाध आग्निरग्रमुषसामशोचि
The king is kindled, the companion, with reverence; whose face, when invoked with ghee, men praise with offerings; Agni, the mighty, shines foremost at the approach of dawn.
प्र केतुना बृहता यात्यग्निरा रोदसी वृषभो रोरवीति दिवश्चिदन्तादुपमामुदानडपामुपस्थे महिषो
With his great banner, Agni advances, the bull roars between earth and sky, from the ends of heaven; the buffalo rises up in the lap of the waters.
अग्निं नरो दीधितिभिरण्योर्हस्तच्युतं जनयत प्रशस्तम् दूरेदृशं गृहपतिमथव्युम्
With shining rays, men generate Agni, praised, dropped from the hand of the shining one, the far-seeing house-lord, the one who is to be invoked.
अबोध्यग्निः समिधा जनानां प्रति धेनुमिवायतीमुषासम् यह्वा इव प्र वयामुज्जिहानाः प्र भानवः सस्रते नाकमच्छ
The fire, awakened among people with kindling, spreads out the dawn as a cow her udder; like strong youths rising up, the rays have stretched toward the sky.
प्र भूर्जयन्तं महां विपोधां मूरैरमूरं पुरां दर्माणम् नयन्तं गीर्भिर्वना धियं धा हरिश्मश्रुं न वार्मणा धनर्चिम्
He, the mighty one, brings forth abundant light, leading the wise with the unwise, guiding the order of the ancient city; with songs they seek the inspired thought, the golden-bearded one, whose armor is radiant.
शुक्रं ते अन्यद्यजतं ते अन्यद्विषुरूपे अहनी द्यौरिवासि विश्वा हि माया अवसि स्वधावन्भद्रा ते पूषन्निह रातिरस्तु
Your brightness is one thing, your holiness another; you are of two forms, like day and night, O Agni. All your powers are wondrous; may your favor, O bountiful Pūṣan, be with us here.
इडामग्ने पुरुदंसं सनिं गोः शश्वत्तमं हवमानाय साध स्यान्नः सूनुस्तनयो विजावाग्ने सा ते सुमतिर्भूत्वस्मे
O Agni, ever-bringing wealth, grant us the most lasting share of the cow, for the one who calls upon you. May our son, our descendant, be victorious; may your good will be with us.
प्र होता जातो महान्नभोविन्नृषद्मा सीददपां विवर्ते दधद्यो धायी सुते वयांसि यन्ता वसूनि विधते तनूपाः
The great priest is born, knowing the sky, sitting in the seat of men, turning the waters; he holds the offerings, he is the one who brings the gifts, the protector of the body, leading to wealth.
प्र सम्राजमसुरस्य प्रश्स्तं पुंसः कृष्टीनामनुमाद्यस्य इन्द्रस्येव प्र तवसस्कृतानि वन्दद्वारा वन्दमाना विवष्टु
Let the king, the lord, the renowned one, the man among peoples, the one to be honored, like Indra, whose deeds are mighty, come forth; let him, approached with praise, grant us favor.
अरण्योर्निहितो जातवेदा गर्भ इवेत्सुभृतो गर्भिणीभिः दिवेदिव ईड्यो जागृवद्भिर्हविष्मद्भिर्मनुष्येभिरग्निः
Hidden in the forests, Jātavedas is kindled, like an embryo well-nourished by pregnant mothers; day by day, Agni is to be praised by the wakeful, by those offering oblations among men.
सनादग्ने मृणसि यातुधानान्न त्वा रक्षांसि पृतनासु जिग्युः अनु दह सहमूरान्कयादो मा ते हेत्या मुक्षत दैव्यायाः
From of old, Agni, you destroy the sorcerers; no demons have overcome you in battles. Burn up the malicious, the devourers; let not your divine weapon miss its mark.
अग्न ओजिष्ठमा भर द्युम्नमस्मभ्यमध्रिगो प्र नो राये पनीयसे रत्सि वाजाय पन्थाम्
Agni, bring us the greatest strength, undiminished; lead us on the path to wealth, so that you may grant us the way to victory.
यदि वीरो अनु ष्यादग्निमिन्धीत मर्त्यः आजुह्वद्धव्यमानुषक्शर्म भक्षीत दैव्यम्
If a hero is born, let a mortal kindle Agni; let him offer the human oblation, let him partake of the divine protection.
त्वेषस्ते धूम ऋण्वति दिवि सं च्छुक्र आततः सूरो न हि द्युता त्वं कृपा पावक रोचसे
Your smoke, fierce one, rises to the sky; your bright flame is spread out, like the sun in its splendor. You shine, O purifier, with your radiance.
त्वं हि क्षैतवद्यशो ऽग्ने मित्रो न पत्यसे त्वं विचर्षणे श्रवो वसो पुष्टिं न पुष्यसि
For you possess lordly fame, Agni; like Mitra, you are a master. You, O wise one, grant glory to men, you foster prosperity as nourishment.
प्रातरग्निः पुरुप्रियो विष स्तवेतातिथिः विश्वे यस्मिन्नमर्त्ये हव्यं मर्तास इन्धते
In the morning, let Agni, beloved by many, be praised as a guest; in whom all mortals place their offering, in the immortal one.
यद्वाहिष्ठं तदग्नये बृहदर्च विभावसो महिषीव त्वद्रयिस्त्वद्वाजा उदीरते
Whatever is most excellent, let it be for Agni, with great praise, O radiant one; like a mighty cow, your riches and your strength arise from you.
विशोविशो वो अतिथिं वाजयन्तः पुरुप्रियम् अग्निं वो दुर्यं वचः स्तुषे शूषस्य मन्मभिः
From house to house, praising the beloved guest, Agni, I speak this word for you, O powerful one, with my hymns of longing.
बृहद्वयो हि भानवे ऽर्चा देवायाग्नये यं मित्रं न प्रशस्तये मर्तासो दधिरे पुरः
For to the great, shining Agni, the gods have given praise; like Mitra, for renown, mortals have placed him at the forefront.
अगन्म वृत्रहन्तमं ज्येष्ठमग्निमानवम् य स्म श्रुतर्वन्नार्क्षे बृहदनीक इध्यते
We have come to Agni, the slayer of Vṛtra, the eldest, the wise one; he, famed for his gifts, is kindled with a great face.
जातः परेण धर्मणा यत्सवृद्भिः सहाभुवः पिता यत्कश्यपस्याग्निः श्रद्धा माता मनुः कविः
Born by the supreme law, you have become strong with the mighty; Agni is the father of Kaśyapa, faith is the mother, Manu the sage.
