चक्रं यदस्याप्स्वा निषत्तमुतो तदस्मै मध्विच्चच्छद्यात् पृथिव्यामतिषितं यदूधः पयो गोष्वदधा ओषधीषु
When his wheel is set in the waters, may sweet drink cover it for him on earth; whatever milk is pressed out, he has placed it among cows and in the plants.
त्यमू षु वाजिनं देवजूतं सहोवानं तरुतारं रथानाम् अरिष्टनेमिं पृतनाजमाशुं स्वस्तये तार्क्ष्यमिहा हुवेम
Let us call here for our welfare that mighty one, the prize-winner, the god-driven, the strong, the swiftest of charioteers, Tārkṣya, whose wheel is unbroken, born in battle.
त्रातारमिन्द्रमवितारमिन्द्रं हवेहवे सुहवं शूरमिन्द्रम् हुवे नु शक्रं पुरुहूतमिन्द्रमिदं हविर्मघवा वेत्विन्द्रः
I call Indra the protector, Indra the helper, Indra the well-invoked at every call, Indra the mighty, Indra the much-invoked; may this offering reach Indra, the generous, the possessor of wealth.
यजामह इन्द्रं वज्रदक्षिणं हरीणां रथ्यं विव्रतानाम् प्र श्मश्रुभिर्दोधुवदूर्ध्वधा भुवद्वि सेनाभिर्भयमानो वि राधसा
Let us worship Indra, whose right hand wields the thunderbolt, who rides the chariot drawn by the bay steeds; let his beard shake upwards, let him come with his hosts, fearless, bestowing gifts.
सत्राहणं दाधृषिं तुम्रमिन्द्रं महामपारं वृशभं सुवज्रम् हन्ता यो वृत्रं सनितोत वाजं दाता मघानि मघवा सुराधाः
Indra, the slayer of foes, the strong, the mighty, the boundless, the bull with the good thunderbolt, the destroyer of Vṛtra, the winner of the prize, the giver of gifts, the generous, the truly bountiful.
यो नो वनुष्यन्नभिदाति मर्त उगणा वा मन्यमानस्तुरो वा क्षिधी युधा शवसा वा तमिन्द्राभी ष्याम वृषमणस्त्वोताः
Whoever, whether mortal or non-mortal, opposes us—whether he is a host, or thinks himself strong, or is swift or cunning—may we, with Indra's help, overcome him in battle, relying on your strength.
यं वृत्रेषु क्षितय यं युक्तेषु तुरयन्तो हवन्ते यं शूरसातौ यमपामुपज्मन्यं विप्रासो वाजयन्ते स इन्द्रः
He whom people call upon in battles, whom they urge in contests, whom the brave invoke in the struggle, whom the priests call upon at the pressing of the waters for strength—that is Indra.
इन्द्रापर्वता बृहता रथेन वामीरिष आ वहतं सुवीराः वीतं हव्यान्यध्वरेषु देवा वर्धेथां गीर्भीरिडया मदन्ता
Indra and Parvatī, come with your great chariot, bringing riches; accept the offerings at the sacrifices, O gods, grow with our songs, rejoicing in our praise.
इन्द्राय गिरो अनिशितसर्गा अपः प्रैरयत्सगरस्य बुध्नात् यो अक्षेणेव चक्रियौ शचीभिर्विष्वक्तस्तम्भ पृथिवीमुत द्याम्
For Indra, the songs, unrestrained in their creation, have flowed; he set the waters in motion from the ocean's depth; with his powers, as with an axle, he upheld earth and sky on every side.
आ त्वा सखायः सख्या ववृत्युस्तिरः पुरू चिदर्णवां जगम्याः पितुर्नपातमा दधित वेधा अस्मिन्क्षये प्रतरां दीद्यानः
Your friends have chosen you for friendship; you have crossed many wide seas; O descendant of the Father, may the wise one place you in this dwelling, shining far and wide.
को अद्य युङ्क्ते धुरि गा ऋतस्य शिमीवतो भामिनो दुर्हृणायून् आसन्नेषामप्सुवाहो मयोभून्य एषां भृत्यामृणधत्स जीवात्
Who today will yoke the cows of truth to the yoke, swift, shining, hard to restrain? Among them, the bringer of joy has carried the waters; he has fulfilled the service of these, granting them life.
चतुर्थ द्वितीयो ऽर्धः गायन्ति त्वा गायत्रिणो ऽर्चन्त्यर्कमर्किणः ब्रह्माणस्त्वा शतक्रत उद्वंशमिव येमिरे
The singers of the Gāyatrī chant you in the fourth and second parts; the singers of the Arkā hymn you with the Arkā; the priests, O hundred-powered, have raised you up like a banner.
इन्द्रं विश्वा अवीवृधन्त्समुद्रव्यचसं गिरः रथीतमं रथीनां वाजानां सत्पतिं पतिम्
All the hymns have magnified Indra, who encompasses the oceans, the foremost charioteer among charioteers, the lord of strength, the true master, the protector.
इममिन्द्र सुतं पिब ज्येष्ठममर्त्यं मदम् शुक्रस्य त्वाभ्यक्षरन्धारा ऋतस्य सादने
Drink this pressed Soma, O Indra, the greatest, immortal exhilaration; the bright streams of truth have flowed for you at the seat of order.
यदिन्द्र चित्र म इह नास्ति त्वादातमद्रिवः राधस्तन्नो विदद्वस उभयाहस्त्या भर
Whatever splendid gift, O Indra, is not here, not given by you, O Thunderer, may that favor be granted to us; bring both kinds of wealth here.
श्रुदी हवं तिरश्च्या इन्द्र यस्त्वा सपर्यति सुवीर्यस्य गोमतो रायस्पूर्धि महां असि
Hear the call, O Indra, from afar, from him who worships you; fulfill the desire for heroic sons and abundant wealth, for you are great.
असावि सोम इन्द्र ते शविष्ठ धृष्णवा गहि आ त्वा पृणक्त्विन्द्रियं रजः सूर्यो न रश्मिभिः
Soma has been pressed for you, O Indra, most mighty and bold; come, let your power be filled, as the sun fills the sky with its rays.
एन्द्र याहि हरिभिरुप कण्वस्य सुष्टुतिम् दिवो अमुष्य शासतो दिवं यय दिवावसो
Indra, come with your bays to the praise of Kanva; at the command of that heaven, come to the heavenly dwelling, O lord of the day.
आ त्वा गिरो रथीरिवास्थुः सुतेषु गिर्वणः अभि त्वा समनूषत गावो वत्सं न धेनवः
To you the hymns have come, O lover of song, as charioteers to the races; they have gathered around you, as cows around a calf, O Indra.
एतो न्विन्द्रं स्तवाम शुद्धं शुद्धेन साम्ना शुद्धैरुक्थैर्वावृध्वांसं शुद्धैराशीर्वान्ममत्तु
Let us now praise Indra, the pure, with pure song, with pure hymns, who has grown strong with pure praises; let him rejoice in our pure offerings.
यो रयिं वो रयिन्तमो यो द्युम्नैर्द्युम्नवत्तमः सोमः सुतः स इन्द्र ते ऽस्ति स्वधापते मदः
He who is the bestower of wealth, the most bountiful, who is most glorious with glories—Soma, when pressed, that is your exhilaration, O Indra, lord of power.
प्रत्यस्मै पिपीषते विश्वानि विदुषे भर अरङ्गमाय जग्मये ऽपश्चादध्वने नरः
Bring to him who desires, who knows all things, all the treasures, for the eager one who has come, for the man who has come from afar, O men.
आ नो वयोवयःशयं महान्तं गह्वरेष्ठां महान्तं पूर्विनेष्ठाम् उग्रं वचो अपावधीः
May you drive away from us the great decay, the great lurking danger, the great ancient harm; dispel the fierce word, O mighty one.
आ त्वा रथं यथोतये सुम्नाय वर्तयामसि तुविकूर्मिमृतीषहमिन्द्रं शविष्ठ सत्पतिम्
As for a journey, we set your chariot in motion for favor, O most powerful, Indra, lord of strength, with mighty steeds, overcoming foes.
स पूर्व्यो महोनां वेनः क्रतुभिरानजे यस्य द्वारा मनुः पिता देवेषु धिय आनजे
He is the ancient singer of the great ones, born with wisdom, by whose doors Manu, our father, entered among the gods with insight.
यदी वहन्त्याशवो भ्राजमाना रथेष्वा पिबन्तो मदिरं मधु तत्र श्रवांसि कृण्वते
When the swift ones, shining in the chariots, carry the exhilarating sweet drink, there they win renown.
त्यमु वो अप्रहणं गृणीषे शवसस्पतिम् इन्द्रं विश्वासाहं नरं शचिष्ठं विश्ववेदसम्
I praise that unconquered lord of might, Indra, the all-powerful, the most skillful, the all-knowing man, the lord of strength.
दधिक्राव्णो अकारिषं जिष्णोरश्वस्य वाजिनः सुरभि नो मुखा करत्प्र न आयूंषि तारिषत्
I have made the hymn for Dadhikrāvan, the victorious, the swift horse; may his fragrant mouths bring us well-being, may he prolong our lives.
पुरां भिन्दुर्युवा कविरमितौजा अजायत इन्द्रो विश्वस्य कर्मणो धर्त्ता वज्री पुरुष्टुतः
The breaker of cities, young, wise, of boundless vigor, was born; Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, praised by many, upholder of all actions.
प्रप्र वस्त्रिष्टुभमिषं वन्दद्वीरायेन्दवे धिया वो मेधसातये पुरन्ध्या विवासति
Let us send forth the Trishtubh hymn for Indra, who is to be praised by heroes; with thought, for the gaining of wisdom, Purandhi calls him forth.
