त्वमिन्द्र प्रतूर्तिष्वभि विश्वा असि स्पृधः अशस्तिहा जनिता वृत्रतूरसि त्वं तूर्य तरुष्यतः
You, Indra, in battles, surpass all rivals; destroyer of curses, creator, conqueror of obstacles, you overcome the hostile and the defiant.
प्र यो रिरिक्ष ओजसा दिवः सदोभ्यस्परि न त्वा विव्याच रज इन्द्र पार्थिवमति विश्वं ववक्षिथ
He who, with strength, wished to surpass the seat of heaven—no one has outstripped you, Indra, in the realms of earth; you have embraced all.
असावि देवं गोऋजीकमन्धो न्यस्मिन्निन्द्रो जनुषेमुवोच बोधामसि त्वा हर्यश्व यज्ञैर्बोधा न स्तोममन्धसो मदेषु
The pressed Soma, roaring, has been poured out for the god; Indra declared at his birth: 'We are aware of you, O swift one, through sacrifices—may we know you through hymns and the joy of Soma.'
योनिष्ट इन्द्र सदने अकारि तमा नृभिः पुरूहूत प्र याहि असो यथा नो ऽविता वृधश्चिद्ददो वसूनि ममदश्च सोमैः
Indra, your seat has been established in the home, your yoke set by men; much-invoked one, come as our protector, grant us wealth, and be delighted with the Somas.
अदर्दरुत्समसृजो वि खानि त्वमर्णवान्बद्बधानां अरम्णाः महान्तमिन्द्र पर्वतं वि यद्वः सृजद्धारा अव यद्दानवान्हन्
You shattered, Indra, the enclosure, opened the channels, released the bound rivers; you split the great mountain, and when you struck down the Dānavas, the streams flowed forth.
सुष्वाणास इन्द्र स्तुमसि त्वा सनिष्यन्तश्चित्तुविनृम्ण वाजम् आ नो भर सुवितं यस्य कोना तना त्मना सह्यामा त्वोताः
We, having pressed Soma, praise you, Indra, and, strong in your might, we seek riches; bring us prosperity, so that with your help, by our own strength, we may prevail.
जगृह्मा ते दक्षिणमिन्द्र हस्तं वसूयवो वसुपते वसूनाम् विद्मा हि त्वा गोपतिं शूर गोनामस्मभ्यं चित्रं वृषणं रयिन्दाः
We have grasped your right hand, Indra, desiring wealth—O lord of riches, lord of treasures; for we know you as the herdsman, O hero, grant us splendid, mighty wealth among cattle.
इन्द्रं नरो नेमधिता हवन्ति यत्पार्या युनजते धियस्ताः शूरो नृषाता श्रवसश्च काम आ गोमति व्रजे भजा त्वं नः
Men invoke Indra with their offerings, when they yoke their thoughts to the ritual; O hero, bestower of strength, grant us fame—share with us the cattle-rich prize.
वयः सुपर्णा उप सेदुरिन्द्रं प्रियमेधा ऋषयो नाधमानाः अप ध्वान्तमूर्णुहि पूर्धि चक्षुर्मुमुग्ध्यास्मान्निधयेव बद्धान्
The swift-winged birds, the dear-minded seers, have approached Indra, not failing; drive away the darkness, grant us sight, release us as one unbinds the bound from a hidden place.
नाके सुपर्णमुप यत्पतन्तं हृदा वेनन्तो अभ्यचक्षत त्वा हिरण्यपक्षं वरुणस्य दूतं यमस्य योनौ शकुनं भुरण्युम्
In the sky, as the golden-winged bird flies, the wise have seen you with the heart—messenger of Varuṇa, with golden wings, the bird of Yama’s realm, the swift one.
ब्रह्म जज्ञानं प्रथमं पुरस्ताद्वि सीमतः सुरुचो वेन आवः स बुध्न्या उपमा अस्य विष्ठाः सतश्च योनिमसतश्च विवः
Brahman was born first, in the beginning, before all; from it, the radiant seer spread forth. Its foundations are in the depths—its measures are the womb of what is and what is not.
अपूर्व्या पुरुतमान्यस्मै महे वीराय तवसे तुराय विरप्शिने वज्रिणे शन्तमानि वचांस्यास्मै स्थविराय तक्षुः
Unprecedented, most abundant gifts have been fashioned for him—the great, the heroic, the strong, the wide-seeing, the wielder of the bolt; for him, the steadfast, the most peaceful words have been composed.
अव द्रप्सो अंशुमतीमतिष्ठदीयानः कृष्णो दशभिः सहस्रैः आवत्तमिन्द्रः शच्या धमन्तमप स्नीहितिं नृमणा अधद्राः
The black drop, shining, stood on the bright one, moving with ten thousand; Indra, by his power, turned it back, the pounding one, and the men, by their skill, removed the stain.
वृत्रस्य त्वा श्वसथादीषमाणा विश्वे देवा अजहुर्ये सखायः मरुद्भिरिन्द्र सख्यं ते अस्त्वथेमा विश्वाः पृतना जयासि
All the gods, seeking to aid you against Vṛtra’s breath, became your allies; Indra, may the Maruts be your companions—thus may you conquer all these battles.
विधुं दद्राणं समने बहूनां युवानं सन्तं पलितो जगार देवस्य पश्य काव्यं महित्वाद्या ममार स ह्यः समान
See the marvel of the god: the young man, surrounded by many of his peers, has grown gray and keeps watch; his greatness endures, yet yesterday, one just like him passed away.
त्वं ह त्यत्सप्तभ्यो जायमानो ऽशत्रुभ्यो अभवः शत्रुरिन्द्र गूढे द्यावापृथिवी अन्वविन्दो विभुमद्भ्यो भुवनेभ्यो रणं धाः
You, Indra, from birth, became an enemy to the enemies, though hidden by heaven and earth; you found your way among the mighty worlds and set battle among the abundant beings.
मेडिं न त्वा वज्रिणं भृष्टिमन्तं पुरुधस्मानं वृषभं स्थिरप्स्नुम् करोष्यर्यस्तरुषीर्दुवस्युरिन्द्र द्युक्षं वृत्रहणं गृणीषे
Like a pillar, you, O Thunderer, steadfast and powerful, are made strong; you, Indra, are invoked by the eager, the generous, the worshippers, the destroyer of Vṛtra, the radiant bull, whom I praise.
प्र वो महे महेवृधे भरध्वं प्रचेतसे प्र सुमतिं कृणुध्वम् विशः पूर्वीः प्र चर चर्षणिप्राः
Offer up your praise to the great, the greatly increasing, the wise; bring forth your goodwill, O people, advance, O leaders of men, go forward to the ancient hosts.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु ध्नन्तं वृत्राणि सञ्जितं धनानि
Let us call upon Indra, the generous, in this battle, the best among men for the prize; may he, fierce and attentive to our call, strike down the foes in the contests and win the wealth.
उदु ब्रह्माण्यैरत श्रवस्येन्द्रं समर्ये महया वसिष्ठ आ यो विश्वानि श्रवसा ततानोपश्रोता म ईवतो वचांसि
The hymns have risen up for glory; Vasiṣṭha magnifies Indra in the assembly—he who has spread his fame everywhere, who listens to my words, eager for praise.
चक्रं यदस्याप्स्वा निषत्तमुतो तदस्मै मध्विच्चच्छद्यात् पृथिव्यामतिषितं यदूधः पयो गोष्वदधा ओषधीषु
When his wheel is set in the waters, may sweet drink cover it for him on earth; whatever milk is pressed out, he has placed it among cows and in the plants.
त्यमू षु वाजिनं देवजूतं सहोवानं तरुतारं रथानाम् अरिष्टनेमिं पृतनाजमाशुं स्वस्तये तार्क्ष्यमिहा हुवेम
Let us call here for our welfare that mighty one, the prize-winner, the god-driven, the strong, the swiftest of charioteers, Tārkṣya, whose wheel is unbroken, born in battle.
त्रातारमिन्द्रमवितारमिन्द्रं हवेहवे सुहवं शूरमिन्द्रम् हुवे नु शक्रं पुरुहूतमिन्द्रमिदं हविर्मघवा वेत्विन्द्रः
I call Indra the protector, Indra the helper, Indra the well-invoked at every call, Indra the mighty, Indra the much-invoked; may this offering reach Indra, the generous, the possessor of wealth.
यजामह इन्द्रं वज्रदक्षिणं हरीणां रथ्यं विव्रतानाम् प्र श्मश्रुभिर्दोधुवदूर्ध्वधा भुवद्वि सेनाभिर्भयमानो वि राधसा
Let us worship Indra, whose right hand wields the thunderbolt, who rides the chariot drawn by the bay steeds; let his beard shake upwards, let him come with his hosts, fearless, bestowing gifts.
सत्राहणं दाधृषिं तुम्रमिन्द्रं महामपारं वृशभं सुवज्रम् हन्ता यो वृत्रं सनितोत वाजं दाता मघानि मघवा सुराधाः
Indra, the slayer of foes, the strong, the mighty, the boundless, the bull with the good thunderbolt, the destroyer of Vṛtra, the winner of the prize, the giver of gifts, the generous, the truly bountiful.
यो नो वनुष्यन्नभिदाति मर्त उगणा वा मन्यमानस्तुरो वा क्षिधी युधा शवसा वा तमिन्द्राभी ष्याम वृषमणस्त्वोताः
Whoever, whether mortal or non-mortal, opposes us—whether he is a host, or thinks himself strong, or is swift or cunning—may we, with Indra's help, overcome him in battle, relying on your strength.
यं वृत्रेषु क्षितय यं युक्तेषु तुरयन्तो हवन्ते यं शूरसातौ यमपामुपज्मन्यं विप्रासो वाजयन्ते स इन्द्रः
He whom people call upon in battles, whom they urge in contests, whom the brave invoke in the struggle, whom the priests call upon at the pressing of the waters for strength—that is Indra.
इन्द्रापर्वता बृहता रथेन वामीरिष आ वहतं सुवीराः वीतं हव्यान्यध्वरेषु देवा वर्धेथां गीर्भीरिडया मदन्ता
Indra and Parvatī, come with your great chariot, bringing riches; accept the offerings at the sacrifices, O gods, grow with our songs, rejoicing in our praise.
इन्द्राय गिरो अनिशितसर्गा अपः प्रैरयत्सगरस्य बुध्नात् यो अक्षेणेव चक्रियौ शचीभिर्विष्वक्तस्तम्भ पृथिवीमुत द्याम्
For Indra, the songs, unrestrained in their creation, have flowed; he set the waters in motion from the ocean's depth; with his powers, as with an axle, he upheld earth and sky on every side.
आ त्वा सखायः सख्या ववृत्युस्तिरः पुरू चिदर्णवां जगम्याः पितुर्नपातमा दधित वेधा अस्मिन्क्षये प्रतरां दीद्यानः
Your friends have chosen you for friendship; you have crossed many wide seas; O descendant of the Father, may the wise one place you in this dwelling, shining far and wide.
