उदु त्यं जातवेदसं देवं वहन्ति केतवः दृशे विश्वाय सूर्यम्
The rays carry that Jātavedas, the god, upward for all to see, like the sun.
कविमग्निमुप स्तुहि सत्यधर्माणमध्वरे देवममीवचातनम्
Praise the sage Agni, true in law, at the sacrifice, the god who drives away evil.
शं नो देवीरभिष्टये शं नो भवन्तु पीतये शं योरभि स्रवन्तु नः
May the goddesses bring us happiness for our desire; may they grant us joy in drinking; may the streams of grace flow for us.
कस्य नूनं परीणसि धियो जिन्वसि सत्पते जोषाता यस्य ते गिरः
Whose, indeed, are you surrounding? Whose thoughts do you quicken, O lord of truth, pleased by whose songs?
यज्ञायज्ञा वो अग्नये गिरागिरा च दक्षसे प्रप्र वयममृतं जातवेदसं प्रियं मित्रं न शंसिषम्
With sacrifice after sacrifice, with song after song for skill, we ever praise the immortal Jātavedas, dear friend, like Mitra.
पाहि नो अग्न एकया पाह्यूत द्वितीयया पाहि गीर्भिस्तिसृभिरूर्जां पते पाहि चतसृभिर्वसो
Guard us, O Agni, with one protection; guard us with a second; guard us with three songs, lord of strength; guard us, O treasure, with four.
बृहद्भिरग्ने अर्चिभिः शुक्रेण देव शोचिषा भरद्वाजे समिधानो यविष्ठ्य रेवत्पावक दीदिहि
O Agni, shine forth with your great and brilliant flames, O god, with your pure radiance. Kindled by Bharadvāja, youngest and most splendid purifier, blaze brightly.
त्वे अग्ने स्वाहुत प्रियासः सन्तु सूरयः यन्तारो ये मघवानो जनानामूर्वं दयन्त गोनाम्
In you, Agni, may the noble ones be dear, those generous lords who bring gifts to people, who grant wide pasture to cattle.
अग्ने जरितर्विश्पतिस्तपानो देव रक्षसः अप्रोषिवान्गृहपते महां असि दिवस्पायुर्दुरोणयुः
Agni, singer, lord of men, fierce one, god who wards off harm, unsleeping guardian of the house, you are great, protector of the home, dwelling in the sky.
अग्ने विवस्वदुषसश्चित्रं राधो अमर्त्य आ दाशुषे जातवेदो वहा त्वमद्या देवां उषर्बुधः
Agni, immortal, bring to the worshipper today the splendid wealth of Vivasvat’s dawns. O knower of all births, awaken the gods for us.
त्वं नश्चित्र ऊत्या वसो राधांसि चोदय अस्य रायस्त्वमग्ने रथीरसि विदा गाधं तुचे तु नः
You, O Agni, inspire us with wondrous protection and wealth, O giver of gifts. You are the charioteer of this treasure; lead us to a secure refuge.
त्वमित्सप्रथा अस्यग्ने त्रातरृतः कविः त्वां विप्रासः समिधान दीदिव आ विवासन्ति वेधसः
Truly, Agni, you alone spread out this law; you are the protector, the sage. The inspired ones, kindling you, O radiant one, call upon you, O creator.
आ नो अग्ने वयोवृधं रयिं पावक शंस्यम् रास्वा च न उपमाते पुरुस्पृहं सुनीती सुयशस्तरम्
Grant us, O Agni, ever-increasing, praiseworthy wealth, O purifier, and bestow upon us, O matchless one, abundant, much-desired prosperity, guided by good counsel and renowned for good deeds.
यो विश्वा दयते वसु होता मन्द्रो जनानाम् मधोर्न पात्रा प्रथमान्यस्मै प्र स्तोमा यन्त्वग्नये
He who gives all treasures, the cheerful priest of the people, the first to taste the honey, to him let our praises go—to Agni.
एना वो अग्निं नमसोर्जो नपातमा हुवे प्रियं चेतिष्ठमरतिं स्वाध्वरं विश्वस्य दूतममृतम्
With this reverence I call upon Agni, the son of strength, beloved, most swift, unfailing, the proper priest of the sacrifice, the immortal messenger of all.
शेषे वनेषु मातृषु सं त्वा मर्तास इन्धते अतन्द्रो हव्यं वहसि हविष्कृत आदिद्देवेषु राजसि
You lie hidden in the woods, O Agni, and mortals kindle you together. Tireless, you carry the offering that is prepared; then among the gods you reign as king.
अदर्शि गातुवित्तमो यस्मिन्व्रतान्यादधुः उपो षु जातमार्यस्य नक्षन्तु नो गिरः
He has been seen, the best knower of the path, in whom the sacred laws are established. Let not our words fail to reach the noble one who is born nearby.
अग्निरुक्थे पुरोहितो ग्रावाणो बर्हिरध्वरे ऋचा यामि मरुतो ब्रह्मणस्पते देवा अवो वरेण्यम्
Agni is praised in song as the household priest, the stones and the sacrificial grass at the rite. With hymn I call the Maruts, Brahmanaspati, and the gods for worthy help.
अग्निमीडिष्वावसे गाथाभिः शीरशोचिषम् अग्निं राये पुरुमीढ श्रुतं नरो ऽग्निः सुदीतये छर्दिः
We seek Agni’s help with chants, the one with sharp flame. For wealth, men praise Agni, much-invoked and renowned, as a shield for good guidance.
श्रुधि श्रुत्कर्ण वह्निभिर्देवैरग्ने सयावभिः आ सीदतु बर्हिषि मित्रो अर्यमा प्रातर्यावभिरध्वरे
Hear, you who listen, with your fire-kindling gods, Agni, with your companions. Let Mitra and Aryaman sit on the sacred grass at the morning rite with you.
प्र दैवोदासो अग्निर्देव इन्द्रो न मज्मना अनु मातरं पृथिवीं वि वावृते तस्थौ नाकस्य शर्मणि
Agni, son of Divodāsa, like Indra by his might, has spread wide over mother earth and stood firm in the shelter of the sky.
अध ज्मो अध वा दिवो बृहतो रोचनादधि अया तन्वा गिरा ममा जाता सुक्रतो पृण
Whether from here or from the great shining expanse of heaven, by this body and my word, O well-minded one, fulfill what is born of me.
कायमानो वना त्वं यन्मात्र्^ईरजगन्नपः न तत्ते अग्ने प्रमृषे निवर्तनं यद्दूरे सन्निहाभुवः
When you, Agni, move among the woods, born of your mothers, you never fail to return, whether you are far or near.
नि त्वामग्ने मनुर्दधे ज्योतिर्जनाय शश्वते दीदेथ कण्व ऋतजात उक्षितो यं नमस्यन्ति कृष्टयः
Manu established you, Agni, as a light for everlasting humanity. Kanva, born of truth, has kindled you; all peoples honor you, whom the strong worship.
प्रथम द्वितीयो ऽर्धः देवो वो द्रविणोदाः पूर्णां विवष्ट्वासिचम् उद्वा सिञ्जध्वमुप वा पृणध्वमादिद्वो देव ओहते
May the divine giver of wealth, in the first and second half, pour forth for you a full stream; press out the Soma, pour it up, fill it up—at the very beginning, the god is invoked for you.
प्रैतु ब्रह्मणस्पतिः प्र देव्येतु सूनृता अच्छा वीरं नर्यं पङ्क्तिराधसं देवा यज्ञं नयन्तु नः
Let Bṛhaspati advance; let the gracious goddess approach; let the gods lead our sacrifice to the heroic, noble one, the bestower of abundance.
ऊर्ध्व ऊ षु ण ऊतये तिष्ठा देवो न सविता ऊर्ध्वो वाजस्य सनिता यदञ्जिभिर्वाघद्भिर्विह्वयामहे
May the god Savitṛ stand upright for our aid; may the bestower of strength rise high—when, with his guiding hands, we call upon him for gifts.
प्र यो राये निनीषति मर्तो यस्ते वसो दाशत् स वीरं धत्ते अग्न उक्थशंसिनं त्मना सहस्रपोषिणम्
He who desires wealth, the mortal who serves you, O giver, he attains a heroic son, O Agni, a praiser of hymns, rich in a thousand-fold abundance by his own power.
प्र वो यह्वं पुरूणां विशां देवयतीनाम् अग्निं सूक्तेभिर्वचोभिर्वृणीमहे यंसमिदन्य इन्धते
With hymns and words we choose you, Agni, the strong one among many peoples, among the worshippers, whom others kindle as the guest.
अयमग्निः सुवीर्यस्येशे हि सौभगस्य राय ईशे स्वपत्यस्य गोमत ईशे वृत्रहथानाम्
This Agni is the lord of good fortune, the master of prosperity, the master of wealth with cattle, the master of victories over foes.
