I consider Agni the Hotar, the generous, the son of strength, the all-knower, the inspired one, the all-knower; who stands upright, self-ordained, a god worthy of worship, following the stream of ghee, with bright flames, accepting the clarified butter.
We call upon you, most fit for sacrifice, O Agni, the greatest of the Angirases, with our thoughts, with the thoughts of the inspired; like the sky encompassing all, the Hotar of peoples, with shining hair, the mighty one whom the clans support for guidance.
For he, even with much strength, shines resplendent, far from deceit, like an axe far from deceit; even what is firmly fixed in his assembly, he hears as in the forest, and, enduring, he measures and leads, unconquered in battle.
O Agni, your fame and vigor are ever new and great; your radiant flames shine forth, O brilliant one; with your might you grant the praiseworthy prize to the worshiper, O sage.
Radiant in splendor, pure in brightness, never lacking in light, you rise with your beam; as a son moving between mother and father, you fill both the worlds.
O Jātavedas, offspring of strength, rejoice in our well-wishes; established by our thoughts, they have bestowed riches upon you, of great form, wondrously born.
Shining, O Agni, make yourself manifest among beings; grant us, O immortal, wealth. You shine with the form of the visible, you fill us with the visible power of insight.
You are the maker of the sacrifice, wise, sustaining great gifts; you bestow the generous, fortunate bounty, abundant food, and enduring wealth.
The people of old placed the bull, Agni, who sees all, in harmony, for favor; they set you, the most renowned, the most widely praised, the divine one, with their voices, O Agni, through all human ages.
O Agni, with your help and heroic strength, one crosses over with deeds of valor; you have fostered friendship with him.
Your dark-hued form, O Agni, is kindled by the priest, placed in the fire; you are beloved of the dawns, you are dear in the nights, you reign among the dwellings.
The plants have placed the sacrificial embryo; the waters, mothers, have generated Agni; the trees and herbs, those bearing within, and those that flow, all together have produced him, the universal.
Agni is purified for Indra; in heaven he shines bright, he is born like a mighty bull.
He who keeps watch, the hymns desire him; he who keeps watch, the chants go to him; he who keeps watch, Soma says to him: 'I am yours in friendship, I dwell with you.'
Agni keeps watch, the hymns desire him; Agni keeps watch, the chants go to him; Agni keeps watch, Soma says to him: 'I am yours in friendship, I dwell with you.'
Homage to the companions who sat before, homage to those who sit together now; I harness the speech with a hundred paths.
I harness the speech with a hundred paths, I sing the song with a thousand turns, the Gāyatra, the Triṣṭubh, the Jagat meter.
The Gāyatra, the Triṣṭubh, the Jagat—these forms the gods have gathered; they have made their abodes.
Agni is light, light is Agni; Indra is light, light is Indra; Sūrya is light, light is Sūrya.
Return again with nourishment, return again, Agni, with food and life; return again, protect us from harm.
Return with wealth, O Agni, prosper with abundance, with all-encompassing sustenance, spread everywhere.
If I, Indra, could rule wealth as you do, then let my praise be singular; let my friend be a giver of cows.
May I learn for him, may I give to him, O lord of power, to the wise one, if I may be the master of cows.
O Indra, the sweet-speaking cow, for the sacrificer, for the one who presses, milks out nourishing milk, cattle, and horses.
Waters, come here, bring delight; place strength for us, for great vision and battle.
That most auspicious essence of yours, let it be shared with us here, like mothers who nourish their young.
Therefore, let us approach the one for whose dwelling you strive; O waters, generate and nurture us.
May the wind blow healing, bringing happiness and delight to us; may it carry us across to long life.
O wind, you are our father, you are our brother, you are our friend; make us live.
Whatever nectar is hidden in your house, O wind, concealed in secret, grant that to us for life.
