O Indra and Agni, hear these hymns composed for you; let your presence be drawn to the worshipper’s altar, where the freshly pressed, exhilarating Soma awaits your delight. Bring with you, mighty ones, all your eager bands—those hosts that attend your glory—so that together you may partake in the sacred offering. Come, O heroes, with your retinues, and approach this Soma sacrifice, for the moment of drinking is upon us. Let the radiant Soma pour forth with a resounding flow, filling the vessels and settling in its proper places, ready for the gods. Let the Soma flow for Indra, for Vāyu, for Varuṇa, for the Maruts, and for Viṣṇu, so that each may receive their share. O Soma, as you stream forth, grant us nourishment and offspring from every side; bring us wealth in abundance, a thousandfold. Pressed by the priests and filtered, Soma surges onward like a swift horse, its delightful stream advancing with vigor. In fertile meadows, rich in cattle and watched over by milk-giving cows, Soma flows like rivers to the ocean, exulting in its own exhilaration. O Soma, whatever splendid wealth—heavenly or earthly—is to be praised, whatever is purified and worthy, bring that to us. The mighty, purified Soma, thundering as he settles on the sacred grass, brings life and sits, tawny-hued, in the common seat of the gods. Indra and Soma, you are the lords and guardians of all that is good, the protectors of cattle; as rulers, fulfill our prayers and make them fruitful. Indra, you grew strong for exhilaration and might, the slayer of Vṛtra and champion of men; we invoke you in great battles—grant us victory in contests. You are a heroic leader, O Indra, generous even to the humble and ever-bountiful to the worshipper who presses Soma. When warriors rise for battle and prizes await the bold, harness your exhilaration-yielding steeds. Whom will you strike down, whom will you enrich? O Indra, enrich us. The cows drink the sweet, overflowing honey of the Soma; those who rejoice in strength with mighty Indra shine forth, possessing wealth and following the sovereignty of the sun. The spotted cows themselves press the Soma for Indra, preparing the thunderbolt and arrow, ever wealthy under the sun’s rule. The wise ones, with reverence, serve Indra’s might. They perform his many ancient rites for his pleasure, possessing wealth and following the sun’s sovereignty. That Soma, pressed for exhilaration, skillful in the waters and dwelling on the mountains, like an eagle, has settled in its appointed place. The pure one, untainted by blemish, is driven by the wind of the gods, washed in the waters and pressed by men; the cows sweeten him with their milk. Like a horse harnessed at the yoke, Soma is adorned—the juice of sweetness for immortality, prepared in the gathering. Shine forth, O Lord of strength, possessor of great fame and inspirer of worship; open the middle vessel. Speak forth, O skillful one, the pressed juice from the vessel, like fire among the people, O lord of the clan. Flow, O Soma, as rain from heaven, bring forth streams for the winning of cows and for insight. The child of the great ones breathes forth, stirring the brightness of truth; he becomes beloved of all, holding them together in unity. You, Soma, have approached the stone of Trita, discovering the hidden place; with the seven abodes of sacrifice, you have reached the beloved. With the three supports of Trita, you have moved across the backs, measuring the course; your yokes are well-contrived. Flow, Soma, for strength, purified and pressed, sweeter with honey, for Indra, for Viṣṇu, for all the gods. Cleansed by pure thoughts, O tawny one, in the filter and free of deceit, you move like mothers with a newborn calf, O purified one, in your course. With your great power you have embraced both heaven and earth; you have lifted the covering, O purified one, by your greatness. The invigorating drop flows, rich in strength and abundant for the cows; Soma for Indra, seeking might and exhilaration, strikes down demons, drives away hostility, and makes a wide path—king of the people. Mingled with honey and strained through the filter, the drop flows, milked from the stone; the invigorating one, delighting in Indra’s friendship, stirs for exhilaration. Purifying himself, Soma flows with vows, filling the gods with his own essence. Clad in truth, he upholds the laws; ten fingers guard him on the unshaken summit. To you, O Agni, we kindle the undying, radiant god; may your most glorious battle shine forth, and when kindled, bring the heavenly portion for the singers. To you, O Agni, with hymn and offering, O lord of shining light, wondrous and bright, lord of the people and carrier of offerings, we call; bring nourishment for the singers. Both ladles have been filled for you, O bright lord of the people; may our hymns satisfy you, O lord of might—bring nourishment for the singers. Sing the Sāman for Indra—the inspired, the great, the mighty, the creator of prayer, wise and praiseworthy. You, Indra, are all-conquering; you made the sun shine; you are the universal maker, the universal god, the great one. Shining with radiance, the gods swiftly go to the realm of light, and you, O Indra, have entered into friendship. Soma has been pressed for you, Indra, most mighty; come with your strength. May your power be filled, as the sun fills the sky with rays. Stand upon your chariot, O slayer of Vṛtra, your two bays yoked by prayer. May the stone, with its fire, turn your mind toward us. Indra’s two bays carry him, whose might none can withstand, to the well-praised songs of the seers and the sacrifices of men.
