With reverent prayers, the sages cleanse the vigorous Soma in the sacred wood, where it plays and moves like swift horses. Their hymns resound together, encircling the triple-backed one, celebrating its presence. Soma, generous and radiant, flows around the vessels, eager like a charioteer striving for the prize. Purified, it generates speech and sends it forth into the world. Soma, once purified, becomes the creator of thoughts, the maker of heaven and earth, the origin of Agni, the Sun, Indra, and also Vishnu. Among the gods, Soma stands as the priest; it is the path for sages, the seer for the inspired, the bull among wild beasts, the eagle among vultures, and the sustainer of forests. Roaring, Soma passes through the filter, advancing with speech like a wave or river, accompanied by hymns and thoughts. Seeing within, Soma stands among the cows, the bull who knows the lower places. To Agni, increaser of sacrifices and most bountiful, the descendant of strength, the thoughts of the worshippers are directed. As Tvashtar, the divine craftsman, has shaped Soma, so too is the glory of the renowned one fashioned by his will. Agni, lord among the gods, surpasses all splendors, and the devotees call upon him to come with prizes. Indra is invited to drink the pressed Soma, the greatest and immortal exhilaration. Bright streams flow to him, seated in the place of truth. No charioteers surpass Indra when he harnesses his bay horses; none by their path or their own steeds can reach him. The worshippers honor Indra with praises, as the pressed Somas eagerly worship his supreme power, revering him with strength. Indra is called to accept, to bring forth, to come as a hero with his bays, to drink the pressed Soma and delight in its lovely exhilaration. He is urged to fill his new belly with the honey of heaven and the pressed Soma, as the exhilarating, well-spoken draughts have come to him. Indra, strong like Mitra, slew Vritra; like a priest, he broke open Vala; like Bhrigu, he endured the enemies in the exhilaration of Soma. Soma is praised as the third and the second half, the giver of cows, knower of wealth, finder of gold. Established in the worlds, Soma flows forth, heroic and all-knowing, drawing men to sit with their songs. Soma, all-seeing among men, purifying bull, runs everywhere. He is called to flow for the worshippers, rich in wealth and gold, so that they may live among the worlds. Soma, master, moves through these worlds, harnessing the swift, green-winged ones. By his command, sweet ghee and milk pour forth, and the peoples stand firm. Soma’s purifying streams flow forth like the rays of the sun, making a banner across the sky, passing through all forms, swelling like the ocean. Born, Soma seeks out speech in its course, crying out like the god, the sun. The Somas, the purifying Indus, flow forth, shining and choosing their place in the waters. The cows, like waters descending in a stream, flow purified and reach Indra. Soma, purifying and delighting Indra, flows forth, led by men and carried away. When pressed by the stones, Soma is poured around the filter, fit for Indra’s abode. Delighting men, Soma flows on, upholding the tribes, ever fresh and worthy of praise. Flowing, Soma is called the slayer of Vṛtra, most worthy of praise in hymns, pure, radiant, and wondrous. Divine, heroic, destroyer of reproach, Soma is pressed and sweet. The sage has protected Soma for the gods with unfailing streams, summoning all contests. Soma brings to the singers wealth, rich in cows, a thousandfold. Cleansed with all intelligence and purified by thought, Soma is asked to grant fame. Flowing with great glory for the generous, Soma brings steadfast wealth and nourishment to the singers. Like a king of good vows, Soma has entered the songs, purified and wondrous fire. This fire, difficult to restrain in the waters, is purified between the rays, and Soma sits among the hosts. Playful, like a festive offering, Soma delights, going to the filter and placing strength for the hymn. Soma is called to flow with nourishing drops, again and again, bringing all good fortunes. The pressed juice and praise of Soma are asked to settle upon the dear seat of the sacred grass. Soma flows with pressed juice, bestowing cows and horses, with swift days. Conquering and never conquered, Soma strikes down the foe without fear, flowing as the winner of thousands. The streams of Soma, flowing with honey, are let forth for aid, reaching the filter. Soma flows for Indra to drink, passing through the unspent waters, sitting at the source of truth. Thus, the sacred Soma, ever purifying and generous, moves through the worlds, bestowing strength, wealth, and divine exhilaration upon gods and men alike.
