Soma, the bull among thoughts and the most discerning of all, is purified by the wise. He rises above the days and dawns of heaven, his voice thundering as he enters the jars of the rivers, finding his way into Indra’s heart with the company of the learned. Purified by the sages, this ancient seer flows forth, surrounded by men, filling the vessels to the brim. In his flowing, Soma creates the very name of Trita, pouring out sweet honeyed nectar, forging friendship between Indra and Vāyu. As Soma is purified, he brings radiance to the dawns and becomes the maker of space among the rivers. He milks the seven streams three times, each time offering delight to the heart, a lovely joy for all. Thus, Soma reveals his true heroism and steadfastness, his generous mind shining forth. The gift he bestows, O generous one, is placed among all givers; may Indra, the bestower of much, be with us. Let no misfortune befall us, Indra, as we pray to you, lord of prizes; delight in the pressed Soma, rich in cows. All voices praise Indra, whose might is vast as the ocean, the best charioteer among charioteers, the true lord and master of prizes. In friendship with you, Indra, may we, the strong, never know fear; we praise you, unconquered victor. Your ancient bounties, Indra, never fail; when you bestow the wealth of cattle, it is a great blessing for the singers. The drops of Soma, eager and swift, flow forth again, passing through the filter, carrying every blessing. O vigorous one, you drive away many evils and make smooth paths for offspring, shaping the horses by your own power. You make the way wide for the cows and seek out abundant praise; may the offering be united for us. The king, wise and purified, journeys up to the limits of thought, traversing the midspace. Come to us, Soma, bringing strength and youthful vigor; bestow beauty and brilliance, well-pressed for divine favor. Come, O Indu, bring us the wealth of a hundred cows, nourishment for our cattle, and fine horses, bearing good fortune for our delight. You, with manly powers, dwelling in the great abodes of heaven, we seek as lovely through your good deeds. With gathered strength and hymns, with mighty vows and exhilaration, you have shattered a hundred strongholds. Then the treasure approached you, king of heaven, O skillful one; the tireless, splendid-winged one brings it to you. Stirring your power, you attain ever greater greatness, renowned among men, bestower of abundance. For the seer of all, Soma bears the common realm, swift as the wind, guardian of the cows, bringer of the nectar. Purify yourself for sustenance, O Indu, cleansed by the wise; come with your radiance to the cows. Purifying, you widen the path, O singer, generating strength for the people; O tawny one, pour forth the swift stream. Purified for divine favor, go forth, O Indu, on Indra’s path, shining, yoked with the steeds. By Agni, Agni is kindled—the sage, the youthful lord of the house, carrier of offerings, with the ladle in his mouth. Whoever, O Agni, worships you with offerings as the divine messenger, be his protector indeed. Whoever invokes Agni for divine favor with offerings, O pure one, to him grant happiness. I invoke Mitra, pure in skill, and Varuṇa, destroyer of foes, and the radiant insight that brings success. By truth, Mitra and Varuṇa, who grow and dwell in truth, have attained vast power. Wise and of mighty birth, they dwell in spacious abodes; Mitra and Varuṇa, grant us skill and remove hostility. With Indra you are seen together, coming united and unafraid, both shining with equal brilliance. Mitra and Varuṇa have entered again into the womb according to their own law, bearing the sacred name, worthy of sacrifice. Even the hidden one, Indra, you have found with your fires, breaking open the enclosure and following the cows. I invoke those two by whom all this was accomplished of old—Indra and Agni. We call Indra and Agni, fierce destroyers of obstacles; may they grant us favor in this way. You strike down the hostile Vṛtras, you strike down the Dasyus, O true lords; you strike down all enemies. The pressed, exhilarating Somas flow forth, wise ones, brimming with delight, upon the ocean’s surface, eager and overflowing with ecstasy. Purifying, you cross the ocean with your wave, O king, O god, great in truth; flow on by the ordinance of Mitra and Varuṇa, impelling the great truth. The king, god of the ocean, adorned by men, splendid and discerning, is manifest. He utters three voices: the fire sends forth the inspiration of truth, the wisdom of the priest; the cows go to their lord, inquiring, and the thoughts, longing, go to Soma. The cows, the milch-kine, longing, go to Soma; the wise, with their thoughts, seek after Soma; Soma, pressed and purified, is praised, and to Soma the hymns and triṣṭubh verses are joined.
