Let us now offer our praise to Indra, the generous bestower of riches, who is known for granting gifts by the thousand to those who sing his glory. He advances with the might of a leader commanding a hundred armies, clearing every obstacle from the path of his worshippers. His abundant gifts pour forth like streams cascading from a mountain’s heights. To you, Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, mortals have long poured out their offerings; so, Indra, who is drawn by the power of hymns, hear us now and come to your kin. Rejoice, O beautiful-nosed, tawny one, for we seek your presence; by you, the wise are adorned. Your renowned and praiseworthy glories shine forth in the pressings, O singer to the gods. Let your most excellent exhilaration flow forth with the pressed Soma, O heroic god, destroyer of evil speech. You slew Vṛtra, the enemy, and day by day you win the great prizes—you are the winner of cows and horses alike. You have mingled with the nourishing ones, ruddy like cows at the stall, and have settled as a falcon rests in its nest. Pūṣan is wealth and fortune, and Soma, being purified, flows forth. The lord of all abundance reveals both heaven and earth. Together, the beloved and eager cows hasten for exhilaration, while the purifying Soma drops make their way, forging a path. Bring us the most vigorous glory, O purifying one, glory that surpasses all, so that we may conquer riches among the five peoples. The discerning Soma, the bull among thoughts, is purified—he surpasses the days and dawns of heaven, roaring into the jars of the rivers and entering Indra’s heart alongside the wise. Purified by the wise, the ancient sage flows, surrounded by men, filling the vessels. He creates the name of Trita, pouring forth honeyed sweetness, fostering Indra’s friendship with Vāyu. This Soma, being purified, has made the dawns shine and has become the maker of space among the rivers. Milking the seven streams three times, he is purified for the heart—a lovely delight. Thus, Indra, you are truly heroic and steadfast, your generous mind unwavering. The gift, O great bestower, is placed among all the givers; so, Indra, be with us. Let no harm befall us, O Indra, as we pray to you, lord of prizes; delight in the pressed Soma, rich in cows. All voices magnify Indra, whose might is as vast as the ocean—the best charioteer among charioteers, the true lord and master of prizes. In friendship with you, Indra, may we, the strong, remain unafraid; we praise you, the unconquered victor. Your ancient bounties, Indra, never fail; when the wealth of cattle is bestowed, it is truly great for those who sing your praises. The eager and swift drops of Soma have flowed forth again, passing through the filter and encompassing all blessings. Driving away many evils, O vigorous one, you smooth the paths for offspring, shaping the horses by your own power. Making wide the path for the cow, the offering seeks abundant praise; may the offering be united for us. The king, endowed with wisdom, proceeds purified to the limits of thought, journeying through the midspace. Come to us, Soma, bring strength and youthful vigor, bestow beauty and brilliance, well-pressed for divine favor. Come, O Indu, bring us the wealth of a hundred cows, nourishment of cattle, and fine horses, all bearing good fortune for our delight. You, who bear manly powers and dwell in the great abodes of heaven, are sought for your lovely deeds. With collected strength and hymns, with mighty vows and exhilaration, you have shattered a hundred strongholds. Then, the treasure approached you, O king of heaven, O skillful one; the unwearied, splendid-winged one brings it to you. Stirring up your power, you attain even greater greatness, O renowned among men, bestower of abundance. For the seer of all, he bears the common realm, swift as the wind, guardian of the cow, bringer of the nectar. Purify yourself for sustenance, O Indu, cleansed by the wise; come with your radiance to the cows. Purifying, you make the path wide, O singer, generating strength for the people; O tawny one, pour forth the swift stream. Purifying for divine favor, go forth, O Indu, on Indra’s path, shining, yoked with the steeds. By Agni, Agni is kindled—the sage, the youthful lord of the house, the carrier of offerings, with the ladle in his mouth. Whoever, O Agni, worships you with offerings as the divine messenger, be his protector indeed. Whoever, with offerings, invokes Agni for divine favor, to him, O pure one, grant happiness. I invoke Mitra, pure in skill, and Varuṇa, destroyer of foes, and the radiant insight that brings success. By truth, Mitra and Varuṇa, who grow through truth and touch truth, have attained vast power. Mitra and Varuṇa, wise and of mighty birth, dwelling in spacious abodes, grant us skill and remove hostility. With Indra, you are seen together—coming united, unafraid, both shining with equal brilliance.
