The wise are ever devoted, offering praise and seeking help from the divine for strength in battle. With eloquent words and eager hearts, they call upon the two mighty ones, desiring wisdom and their generous gifts. The strong one is invoked to flow forth with his invigorating stream, exhilarating the Maruts and bestowing strength as a precious gift. This purifier, the supporter of the two powerful beings and seer of the sun, is urged forward in contests, swift and formidable in battle. Through a pure filter, the tawny one is called to pour his stream, urging his yoked companion in the contests. The strong, red one, whose loud bellowing sets earth and sky resounding, is addressed—like Indra’s fire, he is asked to heed the plea, spurred on for victory. Rich in sap and swelling with juice, the purifier flows, sending forth the sweetest draught. For Indra, the Soma is poured, making a stream of delight. The exhilarating one flows for intoxication, subduing the hostile, bearing his shining form, circling like cows, sprinkled and radiant. Indra is invoked for the prize of strength, the lord of men, whose name is called from every side in battle. The wondrous one, thunderbolt in hand, praised for his might and stone-wielding prowess, is asked to scatter cattle, horses, and chariots for his devotees, granting them strength for victory in every contest. Indra, the bestower of riches, is praised as Maghavan, the generous, who grants gifts as if by the thousand to singers. Like a leader with a hundred armies, he advances with might, striking down obstacles for his worshippers. His abundant gifts flow forth like streams from a mountain. Offerings have long been poured out to Indra, the wielder of the bolt, carried by hymns. He is called to hear his kin and come among them. The tawny, beautiful-nosed one is sought, by whom the wise are adorned. Indra’s renowned, praiseworthy glories are manifest in the pressings, sung by the gods. With his most excellent exhilaration, he is asked to flow forth with the pressed Soma, destroying evil speech. Indra, who slew Vṛtra, the enemy, won the prize day by day; he is the winner of cows and horses. He is mingled, ruddy, with the nourishing ones like cows at the stall, and has settled like a falcon in its nest. Pūṣan is wealth and fortune, and Soma, being purified, flows forth. The lord of all abundance reveals both heaven and earth. Together, the beloved, eager cows hasten for exhilaration; the purifying Somas, the drops, make their way, creating a path. The purifying one is asked to bring the most vigorous glory, surpassing all, with which riches may be conquered among the five peoples. The bull among thoughts, the discerning Soma, is purified, surpassing days and dawns, roaring into the jars of the rivers, entering Indra’s heart with the wise. Purified by the wise, the ancient sage flows, surrounded by men, filling the vessels. Creating the name of Trita, he pours forth honeyed sweetness for Indra’s friendship with Vāyu. This one, purified, makes the dawns shine and becomes the maker of space among rivers. Soma, milking the seven streams three times, is purified for the heart, a lovely delight. Thus, Indra is heroic and steadfast, his generous mind evident. Gifts are placed with all givers, and Indra is asked to be with his devotees. Let nothing adverse befall them, and may Indra delight in the pressed Soma rich in cows. All voices magnify Indra, whose might is oceanic, the best charioteer among charioteers, the true lord and master of prizes. In friendship with Indra, the strong need not fear; they praise the unconquered victor. Indra’s ancient bounties never fail; when wealth of cattle is bestowed, it is truly great for the singers. The drops, eager and swift, flow forth a second time, passing through the filter and encompassing all blessings. Driving away many evils, the vigorous one makes easy paths for offspring, shaping the horses by his own power. Making wide the path for the cow, they seek out abundant praise; may the offering be united. The king, endowed with wisdom, proceeds purified up to the limits of thought, journeying through the midspace. Soma is called to bring strength and youthful vigor, to bestow beauty and brilliance, well-pressed for divine favor. Indu is invoked to bring the wealth of a hundred cows, nourishment of cattle, and fine horses, bearing good fortune for delight. Bearing manly powers and dwelling in the great abodes of heaven, he is sought as lovely through his good deeds. With collected strength and hymns, mighty vows and exhilaration, he has shattered a hundred strongholds. Then the treasure approached him, the king of heaven; the skillful, unwearied, splendid-winged one brings it. By stirring up his power, he attains greater greatness, renowned among men and bestower of abundance. For the seer of all, he bears the common realm, swift as the wind, guardian of the cow, bringer of nectar.
