Soma, the mighty and radiant god, shines forth with heroic resolve, upholding the grand laws of the universe. His strength is unmatched; his power vigorous, his pressed juice mighty—truly, Soma stands as the mightiest among the mighty. Like a strong chariot-horse, he races with the swift, bringing wealth from afar to those who call upon him. Illuminated with radiant light, Soma is invoked by the worshippers—he is the purified one, the shining seer who beholds the sun. When sprinkled with sacred waters and purified through the span of lifetimes, Soma ascends to the holy seat in the vessel. Flowing forth for heroic strength, he delights, bearing his own weapons and streaming toward the altar. As Soma rises through the filter, the worshippers choose his friendship, seeking happiness through his streams that pass through the purifier. Soma, the bringer of wealth and food, comes with heroes, ruling over all. In this sacred rite, Agni is chosen as messenger—the wise priest, ever of good counsel. The clans call to Agni with offerings, the beloved lord of the people, bearer of oblations. Agni, born upon the sacred grass, is worthy of praise and is requested to bring the gods to the sacrifice. Mitra and Varuṇa are invoked for the drinking of Soma, both born with purified insight. By truth, Mitra and Varuṇa uphold the cosmic order, lords of the light of truth; their gracious favor is sought, along with all their aids. To Indra, the singers raise their hymns; they praise him with song, calling upon him from every side. Indra, joined with the two fires and yoked with speech, wields the golden thunderbolt. He is asked to protect in contests and battles for a thousandfold prize, bringing his mighty aids. Indra’s vision is far-seeing; he made the sun rise in the sky and shattered the mountain with his rays. Great reverence is offered to Indra and Agni, praised with splendid words, seeking their help like cows seek pasture. The wise continually praise these gods for aid and for strength in battle. With eloquent words, eager for wisdom, the worshippers call upon them, desiring their gifts. Soma, the strong one, flows forth with his exhilarating stream for the Maruts, granting gifts of strength. The purifier, supporter of the two strong ones and seer of the sun, is urged on in contests, swift in battle. Through the pure filter, Soma flows forth, urging his yoked companion in contests. The strong, red one, Soma, bellows loudly, causing earth and sky to resound—like Indra’s fire, he hears the prayers urging him on in the contest. Rich in sap and swelling with juice, Soma flows, sending forth the sweetest draught. As purifier, he makes the stream for Indra, being poured out. Soma flows, exhilarating and intoxicating, bowing down the hostile, bearing his shining form around like cows, sprinkled and circling the altar. Indra is invoked for the prize of strength, lord of men, called upon in battles by all. The wondrous Indra, thunderbolt in hand, praised with might, stone-wielder, is asked to scatter cattle, horses, and chariots, granting strength for victory in every contest. Indra, bestower of riches, is praised for his generosity—he grants gifts to singers by the thousand. Like a leader with a hundred armies, Indra advances with might, striking down obstacles for the worshippers; his abundant gifts flow like streams from a mountain. For ages, men have poured offerings to Indra, the wielder of the bolt. Indra, carried by hymns, is asked to hear the prayers and come to his kin. Rejoicing, the beautiful-nosed, tawny one is sought, by whom the wise are adorned. Indra’s renowned glories are manifest in the pressings, sung by those who praise the gods. With his most excellent exhilaration, Indra flows forth with the pressed Soma, destroying evil speech. He slew Vṛtra, the enemy, winning the prize day by day—he is the winner of cows and horses. Indra has become mingled, ruddy, with the nourishing ones, like cows at the stall; he has settled, like a falcon in its nest. Pūṣan is wealth and fortune; Soma, purified, flows forth. The lord of all abundance reveals both heaven and earth. Together, the beloved, eager cows hasten for exhilaration; the purifying Somas, the drops, make their way, creating a path. Finally, the worshippers pray: bring us the most vigorous glory, O purifying one, glory that surpasses all. With such strength, may we conquer riches among the five peoples.
