O purified one, we turn to you for protection—instill fear in those who seek to harm us, and grant us wealth, O Soma. At dawn, the gods seek the sacred drop, swift and pure, adorned with the gifts of cattle, beautifully clarified. Sing, O men, to the purified Indu, for the gods themselves approach him with reverence, drawn to his purity. The wise Somas, powerful as mighty buffaloes, lead the waters with their waves, moving through the forests. Tawny and radiant, they overflow the vessels by the stream of truth, pouring forth strength rich in cattle. Let the pressed Somas flow for Indra, for Vāyu, for Varuṇa, for the Maruts, and for Viṣṇu, carrying their blessings. For the favor of the gods, Soma swells like a river in flood; with the milk of the offering, he approaches the honey-dripping vessel, awakened and vibrant. Bright and beloved, like a dear son, he is adorned in the vessel; his streams, like rivers carrying a chariot, set him in motion between their arms. The pressed Somas, full of exhilaration, enter the contest for our fame, for the generous ones. Like a swan calling to its flock, they awaken the thoughts of all; like a spirited horse, Soma is not restrained by the cows. The wives of Trita press the tawny one with stones, preparing the precious drop for Indra to drink. By this, O divine one, purify yourself—resounding, you circle the filter on every side, and streams of honey flow forth. The golden one, beloved, is purified and delights in the shining places; flow to the singers, Soma, bringing them heroic fame. The mortal who presses the Soma desires the inspired speech of this draught; drive away the barking, envious one, as the Bhṛgus once destroyed the sacrifice. O Soma, foremost in speech, flow forth with splendid forms and encompass all acts of wisdom. Most excellent in speech, stirring the oceanic waters, flow for all peoples, O Soma. In your greatness, O wise Soma, these worlds stand firm, and the streams hasten to you. Flow, O Soma, strong and pressed, grant us renown among people, and drive away all hatreds. In your friendship, may we prevail over our adversaries; by your highest glory, O Soma, may we be victorious. Guard us from every harm with your terrible, sharp weapons, ready for battle. Mighty Soma, radiant and heroic, you uphold the great laws. Your power is mighty, your vigor is mighty, your pressed juice is mighty; truly, you are the mightiest among the mighty. Like a chariot-horse, strong and swift, you rush forth—O Soma, increase our wealth from afar. Radiant with light, we call upon you, shining one, O purified one who sees the sun. When you are sprinkled with waters and purified by the lifespans, you reach your sacred seat in the vessel. Flow for heroic strength, delighting, with your own weapons; come here, O Soma, with your streams. As you rise through the filter, O Purifier, we choose your friendship. With your flowing streams, grant us happiness, O Soma. Bring us wealth, food with heroes, and sovereignty, O Soma, ruler over all. Now we choose Agni as our messenger—the priest who knows all, wise in counsel for this sacrifice. Agni, Agni, with offerings ever do the clans call you, lord of the people, bearer of oblations, much beloved. O Agni, bring the gods here, you who are born on the sacred grass; you are the priest, worthy of praise. We call upon Mitra and Varuṇa, for the drinking of Soma, both born with purified insight. By truth, you uphold the cosmic order, lords of the light of truth; these Mitra and Varuṇa we invoke. Let Varuṇa, the protector, and Mitra, with all their aids, grant us their gracious favor. To Indra, the singers raise their song; with hymns, the chanters praise Indra, and voices call upon him. Indra, together with the two fires, joined in purpose, yoked with speech, the wielder of the golden thunderbolt. Indra, protect us in contests and in battles for a thousandfold prize, mighty one, with your mighty aids. Indra, with far-seeing vision, made the sun rise in the sky; with his rays, he broke the mountain apart. To Indra and Agni, we offer great reverence with splendid praise; with our thoughts, as cows seek help, we seek your aid.
