The honeyed Soma, O Indra, your strong and vigorous drink, flows around the sacred filter, settling upon the holy grass. It is the thousand-giving, hundred-giving, ever-generous, and steadfast friend, now seated in the place of offering. Soma, sweet and true to order, clothed in pure waters, rises up to the unshaken summit. He ascends the vessels rich in ghee, becoming the most intoxicating draught for Indra. As a leader at the head of chariots, seeking cows, Soma’s army rejoices. He makes his hosts auspicious, and, when invoked by Indra, bestows swift garments upon his companions. His honeyed streams, ever new, flow forth purified, surpassing all obstacles. O Pavamana, you move toward the abode of cows, and with your hymns, you generate the sun. Let us sing and praise the gods, pressing Soma for great wealth. May he flow sweetly, surpassing all foes, and may the god Indu settle in the vessel. Urged on, the creator of heaven and earth, like a chariot seeking victory, sets out. Adorned with weapons, he approaches Indra and places all treasures in his hands. When the craftsman, inspired by thought or the finest speech, forges the law upon the bright anvil, the eager ones seek the most beloved lord, as the cows seek Indu in the vessel. Together, the ten sisters—the wise, purifying streams—cleanse him. The tawny one, the steed of the sun, rushes around and enters the vessel like a prize-winning horse. Within him, like a victorious host, the shining thoughts—rays of the sun—choose the waters, and the wise one, like a poet, flows toward his path. The strong Indu, abundant in cows, flows for Indra, seeking strength for exhilaration. He destroys demons, repels evil, grants wide space, and rules as king among the people. With this purification, the treasures are cleansed; let mighty Indra flow forth in the stream. Even the breaker, swift as the wind, and the wise Purumedhas establish the man. That great Soma, mighty and potent, became the embryo of the waters, chose the gods, placed strength in Indra, and, as he was purified, generated light in the sun, O Moon. Released swiftly, like a chariot in battle, by thought and first inspiration, the active one is cleansed by ten sisters with pure waters on the summit, in the sacred abode. The waves of the waters, swift and thoughtful, move toward Soma in reverence; they come together, entering the shining, radiant one. The sixth and the second half are for you, O pressers, for the joy of the pressed Soma. Friends, drive away the long-tongued dog from the offering. This Pūṣan, this wealth and fortune, Soma, as he is purified, flows forth—the lord of all existence, revealing both heaven and earth. The pressed Somas, rich in sweetness, delight Indra; purified, they flow, and may their exhilarations reach you, O gods. The Somas, purified, flow for us, bestowing paths and knowledge—friendly, flawless, self-sustaining, and knowing the light. Soma, pour out for us the most prize-winning wealth, sought by hundreds and bearing thousands, shining with great splendor. They approach us harmlessly, desiring what is dear to Indra, like mothers caressing their newborn calf in its early days. For the eager and powerful one, they stretch the bow, manifesting heroism; the bright ones go forth at the forefront for the mighty lord, O youthful ones. They purify that tawny, swift one—the brown—with water; he, with all the gods, goes forth together in exhilaration. The mortal, pressing Soma, utters the sacred words; drive away the dog of evil deeds, as the Bhṛgus did at the sacrifice. The beloved, swift-flowing, is purified, bearing many names; the mighty one, upon whom the sun’s greatness rests, ascends the broad chariot, beholding all. Let the unurged drops flow for us; let the splendid, swift steeds be great among the gods. Even those who do not partake—the desires, the adversaries—let them be ours, and may our thoughts be fulfilled. This sweet one in the vessel has resounded, Indra’s thunderbolt, most splendid of forms. The well-milked, ghee-flowing cows pour forth, and the streams flow with milk. The Moon has gone forth, O Indra, to your abode; a friend, like friendship, does not diminish the song. Like a young man among maidens, Soma strives in the vessel, with a hundredfold strength along his path. The supporter of heaven, the skillful juice, is purified—the wise one, praised by gods and men. The tawny one, released like a strong horse, performs his deeds in the rivers. The bull among thoughts, discerning Soma, is purified; surpassing the days, he awakens the dawns. He gives breath to heaven, to the rivers, to the vessels, and enters Indra’s heart with the inspired. For him, three times seven cows have yielded their milk—the true, immortal one in the highest heaven. Four other worlds he has set apart and made them beautiful. O Soma, well-pressed for Indra, flow forth; be a remover of affliction, together with protection. Let not your essence delight the two-faced, but let the generous drops be present here. Soma, the tawny bull, is pressed out for the two bay steeds; like a mighty king, he bellows over the cows. Purified, he seeks the unaging path, and like an eagle, he settles in the butter-rich womb. The honeyed drops flow forth to the god, like cows to their calf, like milch cows to the altar. Those who dwell on the sacred grass, full of speech, with their streams, reach the uncovered one. They adorn, brighten, and join together; they stir up the will and unite with the generous. At the river’s outflow, the golden-hoofed seize the swift one leaping—the beast in the waters. Your filter is spread out, O Lord of Prayer; you, mighty one, encompass all bodies everywhere. Like one whose body is untouched by heat, no harm comes to him. Those who have strained and borne, reach that together. To Indra, let these pressed ones, the strong steeds, go; the drops, born for hearing, knowing the light. Awake, O Soma, and flow forth for Indra; bring radiant strength, bring the light-bringer. Friends, sit down for the purified one, sing forth; surround the child with sacrifices for adornment. Sing to him, purified for your exhilaration, friends; delight the child with offerings and praises. The child, breathing forth for the great ones, impels the light of truth; he encompasses all beloved things, holding them in duality.
