Soma, the bestower of strength, flows forth, granting all desirable things. He is the very ocean, the first foundation for the gods, and his exhilarating presence fills the world. The Pavamana Somas, accompanied by the Maruts, stream through the filter, powerful and wise, moving along their courses with vigor. Swiftly, Soma circles the vessel and settles, purified among men, approaching the prize. Like handlers grooming a swift horse, the priests guide him to the sacred grass with careful reins. Proclaiming wisdom like Ushanas, Soma reveals the origins of the gods. With great vows and pure bands, blazing like a boar, he resounds as he advances. He stirs three voices: the fire of Agni, the inspiration of truth, and the thought of the priest. The cows, seeking their lord, gather around him, and eager thoughts turn to Soma. His golden, swift streams mingle with the gods, the pressed juice resounding as it circles the filter, like a measured house, the Hotar surrounded by cattle. Soma is purified, the creator of thoughts, of heaven and earth, of Agni, the sun, Indra, and Vishnu. Voices call upon the mighty, threefold, youthful, swift-flowing Soma, clothed in woods, like Varuna among rivers. As the bestower of treasures, he grants riches. Having crossed the ocean, Soma establishes the first law, generating offspring and protecting beings. On the filter, atop the unshaken summit, the great Soma grows, and the stones resound. The tawny one advances, released and settling in the womb of the waters, purified. When pressed by men, he clears a path and, with his own powers, generates thought. Indra’s honeyed Soma flows around the filter, vigorous and abundant in gifts, taking his seat on the sacred grass. Soma flows, honeyed and true to order, clothed in waters, on the unshaken summit, ascending the vessels rich in ghee—the intoxicating draught for Indra. The leader, the hero, goes forth at the head of chariots, seeking cows, his army rejoicing. Making his hosts auspicious, Soma, invoked by Indra, gives swift garments to his companions. His honeyed streams, newly purified, surpass all obstacles; O Pavamana, you flow to the abode of cows, generating the sun with your hymns. Let us sing forth and praise the gods, pressing Soma for great wealth. May he flow sweetly, surpassing the foe, and let Indu settle in the vessel. Urging on, the creator of heaven and earth, like a chariot seeking the prize, sets out. Adorned with weapons, he goes to Indra, placing all treasures in his hands. When the craftsman, inspired by mind or by the best speech, fashions the law on the bright anvil, the eager ones seek their beloved lord, the cows seeking Indu in the vessel. The ten wise sisters, purifying streams, cleanse him; the tawny one rushes around, the steed of the sun, entering the vessel like a prize-winning horse. Within Soma, shining thoughts gather like rays of the sun, choosing the waters, and the wise one flows, like a poet, toward the path. Indu flows, abundant in cows, Soma for Indra, seeking strength and exhilaration. He destroys demons, repels malefactors, grants wide space, and reigns as king of the people. With this purification, treasures are cleansed; let mighty Indra flow forth in the stream. Even the breaker, swift as the wind, and the wise Purumedhas, establish the man. The great Soma became the embryo of the waters, chose the gods, placed strength in Indra, and, as he was purified, generated light in the sun, O Moon. Released, Soma is swift as a chariot in battle, moving by thought and inspiration. The ten sisters cleanse the fire on the summit, in the abode, with pure waters. The waves of the waters, swift-flowing, move forward with thought toward Soma, approaching in reverence and entering the radiant one. The sixth and the second half are for the pressers, for the joy of pressed Soma. Friends, drive away the long-tongued dog from the offering. Pūṣan, the wealth and fortune, Soma, as he is purified, flows forth, revealing both heaven and earth as lord of all existence. The pressed Somas, rich in sweetness, delight Indra; purified, they flow, and may their exhilarations reach the gods. Purified Somas flow for us, bestowing paths and knowledge; friendly, flawless, self-sustaining, they know the light. Pour out for us, O Soma, the most prize-winning wealth, desired by hundreds, bearing thousands, with splendor and brilliance. They approach us harmlessly, desiring what is dear to Indra, like mothers caressing their newborn calf. For the eager and powerful one, the bow is stretched, manifesting heroism; the bright ones go forth for the lord, for the mighty, at the forefront, O youthful ones. They purify the tawny, swift one with water, who, with all the gods, goes forth in exhilaration. The mortal presses Soma and utters sacred words; drive away the dog of evil deeds, as the Bhṛgus did at the sacrifice. The beloved, swift-flowing Soma is purified, bearing names; the mighty one, upon whom the sun’s greatness rests, ascends the broad chariot, seeing all. Let the unurged drops flow for us; let the splendid, swift horses be great among the gods. Even those who do not eat—the desires, the adversaries—let them be ours, let our thoughts be fulfilled. In the vessel, Soma resounds sweetly, Indra’s thunderbolt, most splendid of forms. The well-milked, ghee-flowing cows pour forth, and the streams flow with milk. The Moon has gone forth, O Indra, to your abode; a friend, like friendship, does not diminish the song. Like a young man with maidens, Soma strives in the vessel, with a hundredfold strength along the path. The supporter of heaven, skillful juice, is purified; wise and praised by gods and men, the tawny one, released like a horse with strength, performs deeds in the rivers. The bull among thoughts, discerning Soma, is purified; surpassing the days, he awakens the dawns. He gives breath to heaven, rivers, and vessels, and enters Indra’s heart with inspiration. For him, three times, seven cows yield their milk; the true, immortal one in the highest heaven. Four other worlds he sets apart, making them beautiful. Thus, Soma’s sacred journey unfolds—purified, exalted, and ever-flowing, he brings strength, wisdom, and abundance to gods and men alike, establishing order and light throughout the cosmos.
