Soma, the divine golden one, begins his journey purified and clothed in waters, flowing forth with his sacred stream. He takes his seat in the womb of truth, the treasure-holding place, radiating purity and brilliance. All around, the pressed Soma is poured, holding the highest offering; within the waters, noble ones press him out with stones, extracting the essence. Resounding with the stones, Soma passes unharmed through barriers, shining brightly like a man in a city, and settles amidst the woods. For divine favor, he swells like a river with waves, his juice exhilarating and ever awake, approaching the honey-flowing vessel. With the pressers and swift ones, Soma comes forth, streaming delightfully like a horse adorned with golden trappings. Day by day, seekers pursue Soma’s friendship, calling him Indu, the tawny one, for protection against encircling foes. Purified in the ocean by good hands, Soma awakens speech and flows with abundant, variegated wealth, much desired and revered as Pavamana. The pressed Somas, swift and eager, pour forth intoxicating delight across the ocean’s expanse. Ever awake and dear, Soma, surrounded by coverings, becomes a sage, most Angirasa-like, preparing the sacrifice with sweetness. For Indra and the Maruts, the exhilaration flows—Soma pressed with a thousand streams, surpassing all, cleansed by the swift ones. Soma, the bestower of strength, flows for all desirable things; he is the ocean, the first foundation for the gods, the exhilarating one. The Pavamana Somas stream through the filter, powerful and wise, accompanied by the Maruts, moving with strength and wisdom. Swiftly, Soma circles the vessel, purified by men, approaching the prize like a swift horse led to sacred grass with reins. Proclaiming wisdom like Ushanas, the god reveals the origins of the gods; blazing and pure-banded, he resounds forth like a boar. He stirs three voices: fire advances, truth inspires, and the priest’s thought is awakened. Cows seeking their lord approach him, and eager thoughts turn to Soma. His golden streams, purified, mingle with the gods; the pressed juice circles the filter, resounding like a measured house, the Hotar among cattle. Soma, creator of thoughts, is also the creator of heaven, earth, Agni, the sun, Indra, and Vishnu. Voices call upon the mighty, threefold, youthful, swift-flowing Soma, clothed in woods like Varuna among rivers, granting riches and treasures. Having crossed the ocean, Soma establishes the first law, generates offspring, protects beings, and grows on the unshaken summit, where the stone resounds. The tawny one advances, released and purified, settling in the womb of waters. Pressed by men, he clears a path and generates thought with his powers. Honeyed Soma flows around the filter for Indra, the strong one, abundant in gifts, constant, and seated on the sacred grass. Soma flows, honeyed and true to order, clothed in waters, ascending vessels rich in ghee, intoxicating, the draught for Indra. As leader and hero, Soma goes forth at the head of chariots, seeking cows, his army rejoicing, making his hosts auspicious. Invoked by Indra, Soma gives swift garments to his companions. His honeyed streams flow forth, new and purified, surpassing obstacles; Pavamana flows to the abode of cows, generating the sun with hymns. Let us sing and praise the gods, pressing Soma for great wealth; may he flow sweetly, surpassing foes, and settle in the vessel as god Indu. Urged on, Soma, creator of heaven and earth, sets out like a chariot seeking the prize, going to Indra adorned with weapons, placing all treasures in his hands. When the craftsman, inspired by desire or the best speech, fashions law on the bright anvil, eager ones seek the beloved lord, and cows approach Indu in the vessel. Together, ten wise sisters, purifying streams, cleanse Soma; the tawny one rushes around, the steed of the sun, entering the vessel like a prize-winning horse. Within Soma, shining thoughts gather like rays of the sun, choosing the waters; the wise one flows like a poet toward the path. The strong Indu, abundant in cows, flows for Indra, seeking strength and exhilaration, destroying demons, repelling malefactors, granting wide space, and reigning as king of the people. With purification, treasures are cleansed; Indra, the mighty, flows in the stream. Even the breaker, like the wind, and the wise Purumedhas, establish man. Great Soma becomes the embryo of the waters, chooses the gods, places strength in Indra, and, purified, generates light in the sun, O Moon. Released and swift as a chariot in battle, Soma is moved by thought and inspiration. Ten sisters cleanse the fire on the summit, in the abode, with pure waters. The waves of the waters, swift-flowing, approach Soma with reverence, entering the shining, radiant one. For the joy of the pressed Soma, the sixth and second half are for the pressers; friends, drive away the long-tongued dog from the offering. Pūṣan, the wealth and fortune, Soma, as purified, flows forth, lord of all existence, revealing heaven and earth. Pressed Somas, rich in sweetness, delight Indra; purified, they flow, and may their exhilaration reach the gods. The Somas, purified, flow for us, bestowing paths and knowledge, friendly, flawless, self-sustaining, and knowing the light. Pour out for us, Soma, the most prize-winning wealth, desired by hundreds, bearing thousands, with great splendor and shining brilliance. They approach us, harmless, desiring what is dear to Indra, like mothers caressing their newborn calf in its early life.
