The story begins with a heartfelt invocation to Soma, the radiant and divine drink, calling upon him to flow for us with a thousandfold wealth and heroic power, and to establish enduring fame through his sacred stream. As Soma’s journey unfolds, it is revealed that the ancient paths, once traversed by the divine, are renewed; their brilliance gives rise to the sun, illuminating the world. Soma, most luminous and resounding, flows through the vessels, settling in the two seats, the wombs, where his presence is nurtured. Mighty and steadfast, Soma upholds the great laws, his radiance shining forth as the god of unwavering vow. Purified by the wise, Soma’s stream flows for strength, bringing shining rays and approaching the cows, symbols of abundance and nourishment. With delightful streams, Soma moves forth as a bull, ever youthful and unassailable, worthy of the gods and adorned with coverings. The pressing stone, through its good deed, makes Soma fit for heroes, stirring the wise one into motion, as he seeks the primeval, great place. Soma bears the wave, never failing, swiftly approaching the gods and flowing for greatness. Driving away foes and repelling the hostile, Soma moves toward Indra’s chosen place. Purifying with his stream, clothed in waters, he takes his seat in the treasure-holding womb, the seat of truth, as the divine golden one. The pressed Soma, holding the highest offering, is poured all around; within the waters, the noble one is pressed out with stones. Resounding with the stones, Soma passes through barriers unharmed, like a man in a city, taking his seat in the woods. For divine favor, Soma swells like a river, ever awake and exhilarating, approaching the honey-flowing vessel with the juice of the stalk. With the pressers and swift ones, Soma comes forth, moving like a horse with golden trappings, his stream delightful and invigorating. Seeking friendship day by day, the devotee calls upon Soma, the tawny one, for protection from encircling foes, asking Soma to come near. Purified in the ocean with good hands, Soma awakens speech, flowing with abundant and variegated wealth, much desired by all. The pressed Somas, swift and wise, pour forth intoxicating delight across the expanse of the ocean. Ever awake and dear, surrounded by coverings, Soma becomes a sage, most like the Angirasa; with sweetness, he prepares the sacrifice for us. For Indra and the Maruts, Soma’s exhilaration flows in a thousand streams, surpassing all, as the swift ones cleanse him. Soma, bestower of strength, is the ocean itself, the first foundation of the gods, the exhilarating one. The Pavamana Somas, accompanied by the Maruts, powerful and wise, flow through the filter, their courses strong and vibrant. Swiftly, Soma circles the vessel, purified with men, approaching the prize, led to the sacred grass like a groomed horse with reins. Proclaiming wisdom like Ushanas, Soma reveals the origins of the gods, blazing forth, pure-banded, resounding like a boar. He stirs three voices: fire advances, inspiration of truth, and the priest’s thought. Cows, seeking their lord, approach Soma, as eager thoughts go to him. His golden streams, purified, mingle with the gods; the pressed juice circles the filter, resounding like a measured house, the Hotar among cattle. Soma is the creator of thoughts, heaven, earth, Agni, the sun, Indra, and Vishnu. Voices call upon the mighty, threefold, youthful, swift-flowing one, clothed in woods, bestower of treasures like Varuna among rivers, granting riches. Crossing the ocean, Soma establishes the first law, generates offspring, and protects beings; on the filter’s unshaken summit, the great Soma grows as the stone resounds. The tawny Soma, released, settles in the womb of the waters, purified. Pressed by men, he makes a clear path and generates thought with his own powers. Indra’s honeyed Soma flows around the filter for the vigorous, abundant in gifts, taking his seat on the sacred grass. Honeyed Soma, true to order and clothed in waters, ascends the unshaken summit, rising in vessels rich in ghee, intoxicating, the draught for Indra. The leader, the hero, goes forth at the head of chariots, seeking cows, his army rejoicing, making hosts auspicious; Soma, invoked by Indra, gives swift garments to his companions. Soma’s honeyed streams flow forth, new and purified, surpassing obstacles; he flows to the abode of cows, generating the sun with hymns. The devotee sings forth, pressing Soma for great wealth, praying for sweet flow that surpasses foes, and for Indu to settle in the vessel. Urging on, Soma, creator of heaven and earth, sets out like a chariot seeking the prize, going to Indra adorned with weapons, placing all treasures in his hands. When the craftsman, inspired by mind or speech, fashions the law on the bright anvil, the eager ones seek the beloved lord, the cows seek Indu in the vessel. Together, ten sisters—wise, purifying streams—cleanse Soma; the tawny one rushes around, the steed of the sun, entering the vessel like a prize-winning horse. In him, shining thoughts like rays of the sun choose the waters, and the wise one flows like a poet toward the path. The strong Indu flows, abundant in cows, Soma for Indra, seeking strength for exhilaration. He destroys demons, repels malefactors, grants wide space, and reigns as king of the people. Thus, Soma’s sacred journey is celebrated—a tale of divine radiance, purification, strength, wisdom, and the ever-flowing blessings bestowed upon gods and men alike.
