As the golden Dawn arises, we pray: awaken us once more, O radiant Dawn, to splendid wealth and abundance of light, just as you have blessed us before. Let us be roused into truthfulness, nobility, and good birth—into the generous giving of horses and the grace of gentle speech. O mind, send us good fortune; grant us skill and wisdom. In your friendship, in your exhilaration, bring forth for us, as cows are led to rich pastures, those gifts we so desire. By his mighty power and steadfast resolve, the exalted one has grown in strength. Adorned with glory, he has placed the iron thunderbolt into the hands of the tawny, golden-bearded hero. It is he who mounts the mighty, wealth-bringing chariot—the one who fills the sacred cup with the exhilarating draught for Indra. Let the two steeds be yoked, O Indra, and draw near. I see Agni as the true treasure, the one to whom the cows naturally go, to whom the swift horses and ever-victorious steeds are drawn. Agni, bring nourishment to your worshippers. No harm, no misfortune can touch the mortal whom the gods, united—Aryaman, Mitra, and Varuna—lead safely beyond his enemies. O Soma, flow sweetly for Indra, for Mitra, for Pūṣan, for Bhaga; flow all around for the gaining of strength. Break through every obstacle, conquer foes, and outrun the haters as a debtor flees. Flow, O Soma, like the great ocean—father of the gods, encompassing all abodes. Flow for great skill, as a harnessed steed strives for wealth. The beautiful drop has entered the filter for exhilaration, resting in the lap of the waters, a sage prepared for Bhaga’s delight. Truly, we rejoice in you, Soma, pressed for exhilaration and for the sovereignty of the gods. O flowing one, you advance toward strength. Who, indeed, is that manifest man close to Rudra—whether mortal or self-horsed? Agni, may we attain, through our praises, that swift horse today, that noble power which touches the heart, by your gracious favor. The heroes are manifest; we have reached the prize—the strength of the strong, the power of god Savitar. May the swift ones win the heavenly realm. Flow, Soma, with glory—well-purifying, great, ever-new, following the ancient path. The second half is the fifth; from every side, bring to us that most powerful one whom we invoke, from all directions. This is the priest, the officiant, whom I praise as Indra, famed by name. Exalting Indra with priestly power, they would overcome the foe. Tvaṣṭṛ, the divine fashioner, made the chariot for the horse and forged the shining thunderbolt for you, O much-invoked one. A happy step, a generous gift—he does not violate desire, nor does he harm the wealth of the wealthy. Ever pure are the cows, all-yielding; ever faultless are the gods. Come here with the forest, together with the cows; let them approach the path with their full udders. Dwelling in sweetness, may we prosper in wealth and gain insight, O Indra. The Maruts praise the Sun with hymns; the youthful, famed Indra is exalted. Sing forth a song for Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, the inspired one whom you delight in. Agni is unceasing and wise, the bearer of offerings, riding a goodly chariot. Agni, you are our nearest, our protector, auspicious and sheltering. Bhaga, the splendid, like Agni, bestows the treasure of the great. Proclaim everywhere, whether in front or in the assembly; come here now. Dawn, most beloved of sisters, sets the path in motion, beautifully born. For whom do these worlds exist, if not for Indra and all the gods? Let the gifts flow to you, Indra, as streams run along their course. With these blessings, may we attain the prize established by the gods; may we rejoice, strong with a hundred powers, blessed with noble heroes. Mitra and Varuna pour forth nourishment; make rich food for us, O Indra. Indra reigns over all. At the Trikadruka sacrifice, the mighty one, with barley-mixed soma, powerful and eager, drank the pressed soma with Vishnu as he wished. He delighted in it, to perform a great and mighty deed; the god accompanied the god, the true drop accompanied true Indra. This one, of a thousand measures—the vision of the wise, the thought, the light, the upholder of order, the shining one—gathered together the dawns, those without guile, full of insight and resolve, searching for the cow in their own place. Indra, come to us from afar; come as the lord of the assembly. As a king, as the true lord, we call you—eager for gifts at the pressings—like sons calling their father for the greatest prize. I call to that Indra, the generous and mighty, who holds everything together, unconquered and of great fame. Most powerful, worthy of songs and sacrifice, may he turn toward us with wealth. May the wielder of the thunderbolt make all our paths good.
