I praise the fifth and foremost portion of your might, O Indra—the highest strength that leads to divine attainment. With this very power, O lord of strength, you struck down Vṛtra, the mighty foe. It was by this exhilarating force that you broke Śambara for the sake of Divodāsa; for you, this Soma is pressed—come, drink and be pleased. Indra, grant us your favor, beloved and unconcealed by enemies, as a mountain stands broad and unshaken on every side—O lord of heaven! May that same exhilarating power, O Indra—most loving of Soma and most powerful—stir you again, as it did when you struck down the lawless one. May we obtain that strength. For the weak and the feeble among us, grant firmness and vitality; make our lives secure, O mighty Ādityas—act together for our well-being. You, O thunder-handed Indra, know the ways of destruction and, day by day, cleanse the paths as one clears the tracks. O Adityas, drive away the evils that dwell in the waters, dispel the triple harms, remove ill intentions, and protect us from all distress. Drink the Soma, Indra, and let it delight you—the Soma that the swift stone, like a racing horse, has pressed for you with skillful hands. Indra, you are without enmity or hostility, ancient by birth, yet ever eager for the contest, desiring to be a father to your people. The one who brought us wealth before, I praise as a friend—Indra, come to our aid. Come, do not hesitate—set out, do not stand still! United in purpose, even the firmest can be moved. Come here for this offering, O Indra—lord of horses, lord of cows, lord of fields—drink the Soma, O lord of Soma. By your thunder, O bull, we speak to the living in the assembly of people rich in cows. Even the cows, united in kinship, and the Maruts with their companions, move together, their forms mingling in harmony. Indra, bring us strength and heroism, O hundred-powered and wise one; bring us a warrior who stands firm in battle. Therefore, O Indra, singer of praises, we seek you with longing and summon you—let the blessings rise with the waters. Your birds, O Indra, sit as in a cow’s shelter, in the honeyed, intoxicating place; we praise you in your sweetness. We, bearing you like a mighty load, O Vajra-holder, call upon you, wondrous one, for help. Sweetly, the cows drink the flowing honey; those who rejoice with mighty Indra shine, possessing wealth and following the sovereignty of the sun. Thus, Soma—the delight—made prayer; the most powerful Vajra-holder, by his strength, spread out the earth and slew the serpent, upholding the sun’s sovereignty. Indra grew strong for delight and might, the slayer of Vritra, beloved among men; we call upon him in great battle—let him come to us in victory. For you, O stone-pressed Indra, is this unmatched heroism, O Vajra-holder, who slew the cunning beast with cunning, following the sun’s sovereignty. Go forth, come near, be bold—your thunderbolt never fails! Indra, your heroism is our strength; slay Vritra, conquer the waters, and uphold the sovereignty of the sun. When the victorious rise, wealth comes to the bold; harness the horses moved by delight, slay whom you wish, grant wealth to whom you wish—grant us, O Indra, abundant riches. They have not failed, nor faltered; the beloved ones are unharmed and undiminished. The self-luminous sages, ever fresh in insight, yoke, O Indra, your two steeds. Hear our songs, O bountiful one, as a mother listens to her children; when will you make us, who speak well, prosper? For this, let your two steeds be yoked, O Indra. The moon dwells within the waters; the splendid bird runs in the sky; your golden-wheeled chariot finds its path like lightning. The two worlds know your wealth. To you, Ashvins, the praiser adorns your most beloved, mighty chariot, the bringer of wealth, with hymns—hear my sweet invocation. To you, O Agni, ever-youthful and radiant god, we kindle the sacred fire. In battle, your precious flame shines forth; bring the heavenly portion to your worshippers. With our praises, we choose you, Agni, as the wise Hotar, with shining flames. In your joy, at the sacrifices on the strewn grass, bring forth the offering. Awaken us today, O Dawn, to great wealth, full of light, as you have awakened us before—in truth-speaking, in nobility, in good birth, in the gift of horses, and in gracious speech. O mind, send us good fortune; grant us skill and wisdom. In your friendship and exhilaration, bring us, as cows to pasture, the gifts we desire. By his power, the mighty one, following his resolve, has grown in strength; the lofty one, adorned with glory, has placed the iron thunderbolt in the hands of the tawny, golden-bearded one. He mounts the mighty, wealth-bringing chariot, who fills the cup with the exhilarating draught for Indra. Let your two steeds be yoked, O Indra. I consider Agni the true treasure, to whom the cows go, to whom the swift horses and the ever-victorious steeds hasten. Bring nourishment to your worshippers. No harm or misfortune comes to that mortal whom the gods—united, Aryaman, Mitra, and Varuna—lead beyond his enemies. Flow around, O Soma, sweet for Indra, for Mitra, for Pūṣan, for Bhaga. Flow all around, O Soma, for strength; break through obstacles, conquer foes, run past haters as a debtor flees. Flow, O Soma, like the great ocean, father of the gods, encompassing all abodes. Flow for great skill, like a harnessed steed striving for wealth. Thus, the gods are praised, the mighty are invoked, and the gifts of heaven and earth are sought—may Indra, Agni, the Ashvins, and all the gods bestow their blessings upon us.
