I place my faith in that first, mighty intention, when Indra, the strong one, struck down the evil foe day after day. With his power, he split the waters, and so great was his might that both heaven and earth themselves seemed to pursue him, while even the stone-bound earth fled before his strength. Let all powers gather in honor of the lord of heaven, Indra, who stands alone as the great guest among peoples. He, ancient yet ever-renewed, moves to conquer, and the paths of the world turn after him, he alone. These are your people, Indra, much praised and mighty, who, relying on you, move about with confidence. There is none other but you, lover of song, who unites our voices as the earths are joined. So, O tawny one, accept our words. The great hymns, upheld by peoples with praise, approach Maghavan, Indra. He is ever-growing, much-invoked, immortal, and ever-youthful, adorned with beautiful hymns day by day. All thoughts, fresh as the heavens, gather shining for Indra. The peoples embrace him as a noble husband, a splendid Maghavan, seeking his aid. Let our joyful songs reach the mighty, much-invoked Indra, the oceanic and wealthy one, whom even the heavens cannot surpass in strength among men. Let us praise the most powerful sage. Let us magnify that wise ram, Indra, with a hundred strong companions. Like a swift racer, a prized chariot, may we turn Indra toward us for help with beautiful hymns. The earth, rich in ghee and adorned among all beings, broad and fair, together with heaven, yields honey and is established by Varuna’s law—unaging and ever-fertile. Indra, you have spanned both heaven and earth like the dawns. You are the great sovereign of vast realms and peoples. The divine mother, auspicious and blessed, brought you forth. Now, with praise, we honor the father for his delight, who, with black clouds as his womb, struck down the foe with Ṛjiśvan. We call upon the mighty, thunder-armed Indra, accompanied by the Maruts, as a friend for help. Indra, in the pressed Somas, purify your strength and your song-worthy power, for you alone know the greatness of enduring skill. Sing forth to Indra, the much-invoked and much-praised one; with hymns, call upon this mighty being to come. We praise your exhilaration, O mighty Indra, powerful in battle and world-creator, radiant with golden splendor. Whatever Soma you delight in, O Indra, with Viṣṇu or with Trita Āptya or with the Maruts, rejoice in those drops. Let the priest pour out the most exhilarating sweetness of Soma; for thus the hero is praised, ever-growing. Pour out the drop for Indra; let him drink the honeyed Soma. By his greatness, he inspires generous gifts. Now, friends, let us praise Indra, the praiseworthy hero who alone has surpassed all peoples. Sing a chant for Indra, the wise, the great, the creator of the sacred word, the far-seeing, worthy of praise. He alone, Indra the sovereign and unconquered lord, bestows wealth upon the mortal who serves. Friends, let us seek the favor of Indra, the thunderer, with hymns; praise the most heroic, the boldest among men. I praise that foremost portion of your might, O Indra, the highest for divine attainment, by which you struck down Vṛtra with your power, O lord of strength. By whose exhilaration, O Indra, you broke Śambara for Divodāsa—this Soma is pressed for you; drink it. Indra, grant us your favor, beloved and unconcealed by enemies, as a mountain broad on every side, lord of heaven. That exhilaration, O Indra, most Soma-loving and powerful, stirs you; by it you struck down the lawless one—may we obtain that. For the weak and the feeble, grant us that strength—make our life firm for living. O mighty Ādityas, act together. For you, O thunder-handed one, know the courses of destruction; day by day you cleanse, as one does the tracks. O Ādityas, drive away the evil of waters, dispel the triple harm, remove ill intention; protect us from distress. Drink the Soma, Indra, let it delight you; that which the stone, swift as a horse, has pressed for you, the skillful one, with both arms. Indra, you are without enmity or hostility, ancient by birth; yet you seek to fight and desire to be a father. He who brought us wealth before, I praise him as a friend—Indra, for help. Come, do not hesitate; set out, do not stand still. United in purpose, even the firmest can be moved. Come here for this offering, O Indra—lord of horses, lord of cows, lord of fields; drink the Soma, lord of Soma. By you, O bull with your thunder, we speak to the breathing one, in the assembly of people rich in cows. Even the cows, united in kinship, and the Maruts with their companions, move together, their forms mingling. Indra, bring us strength and heroism, O hundred-powered and wise one; bring us a warrior who withstands battles. Therefore, Indra, singer of praises, we seek you with desire and summon you; let the waters rise with you. Your birds sit as in a cow’s shelter, in the honeyed, intoxicating place; we praise you, Indra. We, bearing you, O unprecedented one, like a mighty load, O Vajra-holder, call upon you, wondrous one, for help. Sweetly, the cows drink the flowing honey; those who rejoice with Indra, the mighty one, shine, possessing wealth and following the sovereignty of the sun. Thus, Soma, the delight, made prayer; the most powerful, the Vajra-holder, with his strength, spread out the earth and killed the serpent, following the sovereignty of the sun.
