Gathered in reverence, we singers encircle Indra, the mighty slayer of Vṛtra, offering him the pressed Soma as waters surround the sacred grass during the outpouring of the purifier. We call upon him with devotion, seeking the fullness of his strength—be it the power he holds among the descendants of Nahusha, his manliness among peoples, or his glory among the five tribes. May he bring all these heroic powers to us, granting us their combined force. Indra, you are truly a bull among beings; with the might of a bull, you guard us. Mighty and renowned, you hear from afar and from near alike. Whatever deeds you perform, whether distant or close, we, your singers, call to you with hymns and the pressing of Soma. With our voices raised in the exhilaration of Soma, we sing to you, heroic and wise Indra, whose name is worthy to be heard, ever generous as is right. Grant us, Indra, a threefold shelter, triple protection for our well-being; shield the generous and me, and drive away these threatening lightnings. All treasures of Indra are to be enjoyed, shining as if gazing at the sun. Born in strength, we have received our share, as with Bhaga. No god nor mortal, not even the long-lived or the swiftest, can attain this wealth; only Indra, who has yoked his two bays, possesses it. May Indra, adorned with all offerings, be present in every battle; come to our hymns and libations, O Vṛtra-slayer, and receive our highest praise. Your lowest wealth is yours alone, Indra; you foster the middle and rule over the highest of all—none can withhold the cows from you. Where are you now, Indra, where have you gone? For your mind is everywhere. You have wandered in battle, breaker of citadels, Purandara; come, let us sing the Gāyatrī for you. We have poured out this Soma for you, wielder of the thunderbolt; so, at today’s pressing, bring forth the pressed Soma. Surely, you are adorned with fame. You are the king of peoples, the chariot-rider, unwearied, conquering all hosts in battle—the greatest, the slayer of Vṛtra, whom I praise. From those we fear, O Indra, make us fearless. Take delight in this offering for our aid; scatter our foes and destroy our enemies. O Lord of the dwelling, firm pillar of the Soma rites, breaker of ancient cities, Indra is the eternal friend of the sages. You are great, O Sun, great Aditya, mighty among the mighty. Your greatness, being of the great, is most excellent; by your power, O god, you are supreme. He who is horseman and charioteer, of beautiful form and rich in cattle—when your friend, Indra, joins with vigor, he approaches the assembly shining. Even if you had a hundred heavens or a hundred earths, O Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, not a thousand Suns nor both these worlds together would equal you. When you are invoked to the east, west, north, or south, O Indra, you are famed as helper among many peoples, and the support of Turvaśa. Who among mortals dares to challenge you, O wealthy Indra? Your faith is established in the highest heaven; the champion seeks victory, but you alone are supreme. Indra and Agni, the foot came from the ancient footed ones; having cast off the head, it seized with the tongue; by night it advanced in thirty steps. Indra, come nearer, approach us with friendly thoughts and aids. Bring us your blessings, most auspicious, and your own powers. May your aid from here be ageless, foremost leader, unopposed, swift conqueror, impeller, charioteer, unwearied, increaser of strength for Tugra. Let not your worshippers or others turn away from us; whether afar or in assembly, do not withdraw. Come, listen to us if you are near. Press Soma for the drinker of Soma, for Indra the thunderbolt-wielder. Prepare the offerings for his help; ready the food, filling with delight and joy. We call upon the universal helper, the wise Indra. O thousand-powered, mighty lord of the good, be our strength in battles. With your powers, grant us the best directions day and night. May your favor never fail us; may we never lack your grace at any time. Whenever the mortal singer grows old in devotion, let him praise Varuṇa with wise speech, the upholder of those who have turned away. Protect the cows and the exhilarating drink, O Indra, guest at the sacred feast, united with your two bays, golden Indra, thunderbolt-wielder, golden one. Indra, listen to our words, come near to this speech; generous one, eager for Soma, let the most mighty come with wisdom to the pressing. For you, stone-splitter, nothing is given away for a distant price—not for a thousand, not for ten thousand, not for a hundred, O bestower of hundreds. You are the wealth of my father and my brother who partakes; my mother too you shelter, O treasure-lord, for the sake of wealth and favor. The fourth, the first portion, these pressed Somas are for Indra, with curds and clarified butter; come for that exhilaration, O thunder-handed, to drink with your two bays, come to the home. These Somas, Indra, are for your delight, famous and praised; having drunk the sweetness, hear our songs and accept our praise, O lover of song. Today I call to you, Indra, the ever-yielding cow, Gayatri-metered, well-yielding, abundant in nourishment and adorned, for food. No great rocks, Indra, can restrain your might; whatever you desire for the praiser, no withholder can diminish your wealth. Who knows with what pressed Soma he drinks, whom the wise one has set, who, delighting, shatters forts with his might, the sharp one, with exhilarating drink? O Indra, shake off lawlessness from the assembly; seat our most desired Soma, O generous one, for wealth, on the sacred grass. May Tvaṣṭṛ, divine speech, Parjanya, and Bṛhaspati protect us; may Aditi with her sons and brothers guard us, saving us from difficult, harmful speech. When, Indra, will you be our companion, when will you be with the worshipper? Let the generous one come near; let your gift, O god, be sought again. Thus, with hearts full of longing and voices raised in praise, we call upon Indra, the mighty and generous, seeking his presence, his strength, and his unfailing protection.
